Well this might sound sad but I showed my Mom a comparison of Futurama and Full Metal alchemist and she thought Futurama was more artistic and looked better.

This pissed me off so bad because Futurama has little to no shadows or lighting effects and the characters have little detail. (I like futurama but its not serious at all like most anime)

Basically I just wanted to see what other people think because most of my friends think anime looks way better.

Its nearly as bad as saying Pacman looks better than Crysis.

Here is a comparison if you dont have them.

I always thought anime had much more attention to detail (i.e lighting, landscapes etc.)than western animation.

American animation.

As much as I love anime nothing beats:

Tom & Jerry(my favorite animated series of all-time), Tiny Toons, Looney Tunes, Tazmania, Pinky and The Brain, Batman: The Animated Series, Samurai Jack(tied with Tom n' Jerry), and Dexter's Lab

Anime has more detail, although its a completely different style than western animation, because western animation is based on the traditional American comics, where in Japan, its manga.

I think Western Animation is made with the purpose of looking simple. While Japanese try to make it look more artistic.

In my case when said Western animation, new-story per episode comedy cartoons and come to mind like Tom & Jerry, Oggy and The Cockroaches, Bugs B., Mickey and co. while Japanese - Dragon Ball, Voltes V, which is deeper and there is a real story and more interesting IMO, but I like both and for me *** animation - deep, interesting, while West animation - fun, amusing. :D

The animation quality in anime is pretty poor compared to western animation. On the flipside, anime tend to follow interesting storylines while western animation tends to go with episodic humor that doesn't follow a storyline. There are a number of exceptions to that though.

Western Animation runs smoother, but some anime art styles are unquestionably superior.

I would have to say Anime. Animes like Ninja Scroll, Ghost in the Shell have very fluid animation, especially during their fight scenes. Though, I'll admit that American animation has certainly gotten better. For example, inSuperman/Batman: Apocaplypse, the animation is veryfluid in terms of the character's motions (this is really evident in the animated short film about The Green Arrow that's included on the Bluray Disc). This is the best I've seen of mainstream American animation. However, when I include non-mainstream American animation, such as big budget animated films like The Iron Giant (that had fantastic animation), then I'd say that American animation is more than comparable.

Western TV animation has gotten cheaper over the years, as anime has gotten better. Most tv western animation now just sub par background filler for the shows jokes. There are some wonderful exceptions though, like avatar.

Movie animation wise, western animation can be extremely top notch(and better than Japanese). Look at Princess and the Frog(animation quality), or many Disney clas sics. With that said, 2D western animation movies are near extinct.:(

So TV wise Japan is top notch. With such studios as Bones (FMA, FMA BH, Eureka 7, Soul eater, heroman)

I guess I had better quit while I am ahead until she says Mario has better music than Final Fantasy. (I wouldn't be surprised) Well when it comes time to put her in an old peoples home she is going to the metal institution instead because of this.

BTW I wan't talking about storyline just the visuals. And if you pull storyline into Anime wins again. But storyline people can have opinions if they want but something as clear as visiuals shouldn't even be debatable.

In game doesn't look as good as prerendered movies does it.

I am glad to see most people think Anime is better.

If your mother's subjective opinion about the subjective visual enjoyability of one TV show compared to another "pisses you off so bad", you might have a problem. :P

Clearly the bottom two pictures are better, I mean come on now, its not like detail and accurate colours actually matter.

Western animation has more variation in art style, and has more fluid animation (the better produced animations, not the stuff that's equivalent to Flash cartoons). Japanese animation is more detailed, but lacks most of the fluidity of Western animation, but has more variation in genre, ranging from drama to the more common comedy seen in Western animations.

yea I know I mean futurama's walls are like one color when FMA's look like wear and paint bumps on the wall.

Also Futuramas Skies are usually just a gradient with a couple of clouds when FMA and most anime have sun streaks and realistic lighting.

^ That's not a fair comparison, especially considering Family guy just went HD this season...

These are better examples imo.

Some Western animation artstyles are better than japanee animation artstyles and viceversa, having said that I prefer more what the japanese anime companies do mainly because there has been a decline in the production of the American cartoons since the golden age (1928-1960ish). After that era most if not all of the truly good animation was in movies, heck still in the golden era the cartoons were mostly seen in theaters anyways. Still I can understand people liking the American StyIes better, some are great.

I still think Anime beats that but that second pic is definitely very good. That forest backing is similar to Anime backing style. If the characters where a little better E.G. her hair and better shadows then It would be around even level.

i am not a fan of anime, in fact i barely watch any, but it just seems that japan and maybe korea just seem to have more devoted, bigger animation studios that can produce similar work. I bought justice league complete and in a lot of the commentary, they talked about outsourcing a hell lot of their animation to korea. In fact, i would not be surprised if a lot of american companies did that. Im not even sure what american animation is because it varies a lot from family guy to the simpsons to young justice to spongebob to whatever the hell the run on cartoon network these days that look like a bunch of twelve year olds put together. No to mention the crappy 3D stuff they try to pass off as animation.

Cartoons are more fluid, but Anime is more artistic, mature, deep and has more details. The only kiddy anime I know are Pokemon and Bakugan (repetitive and ripoff)

A lot of animation studios usually go with similar animation their in their works. Not to say there aren't any that change up from time to time (Western studios as well).

On a different topic, I hate how in anime, everyone and everything that's American has to wear the stars and stripes (Heroman being one of them). That's really just something I've observed.

ya, so its really hard to really categorize an american style.. at least thats what i gather :P i dont know, american media doesnt really seem to push cartoons as a seroius medium. Besides the occasional kids cartoon show that actually tries to take itself seriously, there seems to only be adult cartoon shows and those require absolutely no good animation because their humor usually isnt in the animation. or it actually depends on the bad animation

im looking forward to dc animated stuff. I know half of it is made in asia, but i really like it. Its much more friendly than getting into the dc universe of comics (reading wikipedia on all these characters is pretty much reading a book... even on wikipedia it has a plot and plot twists and i dont wanna stop).

Thats really good with the glow effects. Yea I don't really see Western animation ever being more visually appealing than Japanese animation. They've always just put more work into it. I remember even watching anime like guyver and another really good one when I was little and they were still better back then ( only about 10 years ago)

I just searched for this series on Bluray at Amazon and the first volume, which is only one hour long, costs $134.00. Damn. I wanted to add it to my queue on Netflix, but it's not available on Netflix. Double damn.
