Academy Award-winning actress Jennifer Lawrence is not a fan of anti-gay Rowan County, Kentucky clerk Kim Davis.

In a new interview with Vogue magazine, Lawrence calls Davis that “lady who makes me embarrassed to be from Kentucky.” Vogue happened to interview Lawrence at her home on the day that Kim Davis was released from jail after defying Judge David Bunning’s order instructing her to do her job and issue marriage licenses to same sex couples.

From Vogue:

“Don’t even say her name in this house,” [Lawrence] shoots back, and then goes into a rant about “all those people holding their crucifixes, which may as well be pitchforks, thinking they’re fighting the good fight. I grew up in Kentucky. I know how they are.”

“I was raised a Republican,” Lawrence adds. But the GOP’s stance on social issues has soured her opinion of the party: “I just can’t imagine supporting a party that doesn’t support women’s basic rights. It’s 2015 and gay people can get married and we think that we’ve come so far, so, yay! But have we? I don’t want to stay quiet about that stuff.”

Regardless of the opinion held, I do not give any consideration to "celebs" and any opinion they hold. I find it alarming how many people do though.

I never understood the logic behind it. How does your excellence in one particular field enable you to be an authority on another? especially when your field of expertise is a frivolous one.

She claimed to have an "authority over another?"

Looks to me like she's just voicing her opinion, just as you and I do. I wouldn't be so quick to discount someone just because of their profession.

He's not giving an interview to a widely publicized magazine though. For whatever reason these celebs act as if their opinions and comments take precedent over others. If not, why in the hell would this broad be talking about such a topic during some nonsensical interview?

I was referring to those who hold celebrities to such standards. She's of course allowed to have an opinion, but you can't deny the reality that those opinions of celebrities are heralded as views of utmost importance on sociopolitical matters.

Would you create a thread about Joe Blow down the street, voicing his opinion about anti-gay bigotry?

That's a poor comparison because no one cares about what Joe Blow thinks. Jennifer Lawrence is a huge celebrity who, for better or for worse, has a lot of people following her every whim. If she decides to use that power for good and take up a cause worth fighting about I don't see the problem. Better than someone like Jenny McCarthy and Jim Carrey using their voice to brainwash people into being anti-vaccine. She is also somewhat of a role model to young girls.

For the record I'm not a fan of her, just stating the reasoning behind it.

We understand the reasoning behind it, which is what we're saying is wrong about such a thought process. In fact, you already discredited that thought process in your post. When people judge others' opinions not on merit but because they're celebrities, objectivity is lost and you get people like Jim Carry spreading insane shit about vaccines and autism. This thought process signifies a breakdown in reasoning. The fact that it can lead to good - just like it can lead to bad - doesn't acquit it from the charge of inanity.

Which is, again, what's wrong with the affair, not that it happens to be doing ostensible good in this instance.

Well sure if we're talking about it in a general sense I agree with that but I was just looking at J-Law's example in particular. I figure celebrities are going to go on soapboxes inevitably so we might as well separate them.

The comparison holds merit because it shows the O.P. does care about the opinions of a celeb rather than someone down the street who doesn't play pretend for a living.

All this girl does is play make believe and for whatever reason, a segment of society is hinged on everything these people do and say. Such a thought process is alarming.

Big whoop, no one cares if yet one more person doesn't like her. Who cares if she's an actress or not. Just about everyone hates that lady.

In America, celebrities are given higher status than politicians, so that many people are swayed more by what celebrities do than politicians, scientists or other scholars. It's pretty sad if you think about it. The only scientists that get any kind of attention have made themselves celebrities, like Dr. Oz, Neil Degrasse Tyson, Carl Saga, Bill Nye, etc. Most people don't value educated opinions, they only value what their favorite celebrities are spouting or hocking.

Even if the members of this forum dismiss what Jennifer Lawrence has to say, many more people actually care. Ultimately, in this situation, the only people that support hate-spewing jerks like Kim Davis are hate-spewing jerks.

Republicans were always supposed to be the progressive ones that deprived from democrats but that suddenly flipped somehow. It's like the entire party got more stupid overtime. Now I'm seeing that among democrats as well. They're morphing into one party.

Kim Davis is a huge hypocrite. I find it very hard to believe that she was a registered as a democrat.

I despise pop science. If the many are dumb and want to obstinately remain dumb so be it; scientists don't need to pander to them and skew science for their whims.

Not being homophobic isn't something to be congratulated for. Homophobia is vile, disgusting and evil. Since when was not being evil a progressive thing? We don't congratulate people for thinking that women should be allowed to vote or that slavery is wrong, we just accept those beliefs as being sane and anything opposing them as insane. In the past sure those beliefs would be uncommon and progressive, but now they're just the basics of being civilised.

Jennifer Lawrence is a piece of garbage that doesn't see herself on par with the average person.

She sees herself above "normal" people

Kim Davis? Ehhh, even awful people dislike Hitler, she's not saying much there.

The Vatican released several statements that the Pope met with quite a few people during his visit to the US and that he may not have known who she was, and certainly didn't condone her actions.

We know that Pope Francis is an open-minded person but his comments are much more on the side to welcoming people of different faiths, ethnicities and sexualities, rather than judging them, as Kim Davis did.

Two things that I think a few people here may be missing...

A) Maybe she's not trying to change anyone's mind. Maybe she's just playing the politics game, as in trying to seem cool to the kinds of people who are more likely to buy her movies. And if that's the case, that's not really so absurd. I mean, don't we all do it to some extent? I can act like a gansta all day, but I'm probably gonna try to look a little bit more professional when I go to apply for a job.

B) Or maybe it's got nothing to do with that at all. Maybe she isn't trying to change people's minds or play the politics game. Maybe she's just plain speaking openly the way REAL people tend to do. I mean, Jesus. A lot of my comments on this site have been heavily opinionated, but it's not like I'm getting paid for posting here. People post questions, I say what I think. It really doesn't have to be any more complicated than that. That's sort of the type of thing that PEOPLE do. And Jennifer Lawrence is a real person, isn't she? Why do I get to spend all day expressing my dumb-ass opinions, but the second that Jennifer Lawrence does it she gets criticized because she has the nerve to be rich and famous while doing the same thing that REAL people do all the fucking time?

Christ, why are people getting upset that someone voiced their opinion on something they were asked? What the hell do people think they do when they post here?

Good for her. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, celebrity or otherwise.

@MrGeezer: yeah, it's odd that people seem so upset by celebrities saying stuff.

That's not true, as people are upset about people's reactions to celebrities' opinions. Celebrities, like everybody else, afford opinions, but what is the basis of the public's celebration of those opinions?

Even though I agree with her, I don't give a rat's ass what Jennifer Lawrence or most other famous people think.
