She doesn't want people selling her work. It's the principal and has nothing to do with her wealth.SolidSnake35
Sure it doesnt:roll: Cmon she just wants more money, that crap about her being too distressed to write is just BS to get people to sympathize with her. I for one am not falling for that, she should not have sued. So what if someone writes a encyclapedia of her books? She praised the site before and now that it was about to make money she has a problem with it? She didnt seem too distressed when the site was up but when the person who wrote it wants to profit of of their hard work organizing her books into an encyclapedia that many would appreciate she suddenly gets distressed. BS, she is just pissed that she didnt write it first.

She was writing an encyclopedia herself. I wouldn't want to be working on a book of my own material and have competition from someone else using my material too. It's perfectly reasonable for her to have a problem with the information being published and yet fine whilst it's only on the Internet.[QUOTE="Film-Guy"][QUOTE="SolidSnake35"]She doesn't want people selling her work. This person was going to publish theirs first so too bad for her. Also competition is good, it means maybe she is afraid that his version will be better than hers. So instead of doing the decent thing and improving her own and letting the other guy publish his own and let the fans respence and the sales show whos version is better, she decided to get rid of the competion.

I dont think he should be the one, didnt you read my earlier post? I think its good if his gets published and hers, that way she can improve on hers and see which one the fans prefer. There are several different versions of the same persons biography and some are more accurate than others. Its the same situation here, if hers is not as good as his then thats her fault for not being as accurate as he is.

What if someone had written an alternative version of the 7th book? Wouldn't you think that we as fans should get to choose the best one and it would assist her in writing a better ending for the series?
It seems a little weird she would let it bother her that much, but she's got the right to sue if the site is breaking that law. It's actually a rarity now that people sue legitimately.blackngold29
What law did he break though? I thought the book was going to be published but she stopped it with her lawsuit.

Theres a difference between writing whole new material and saying its an alternative version, and just organizing pre written material into an encyclapedia. If he got in their first then obviously she is either wants money or is scared that his version will be better than hers. You dont believe that crap about her being too distressed to write do you?

I thought that she is publishing (or atleast endorsing) the "official HP encyclo", but this website has compiled all that info already, and it's free, so nobody'll by the book now. I'm not 100% sure, but she does have the rights to the characters and what is written about them right?[QUOTE="Film-Guy"]Theres a difference between writing whole new material and saying its an alternative version, and just organizing pre written material into an encyclapedia. Its done all the time though, whats so wrong about it? It helps people figure out parts of the book they couldnt maybe figure out, I dont see why that is bad.

From a business mind that would be exactly what she's doing and it makes sense; who would choose to have competition if they could just eliminate it? Whether it's "right" to do... well I guess that's what this thread is about. Its done all the time though, whats so wrong about it? I don't know what the laws are but that's what I believe is right. People can figure out the book by using online sources. I don't think there's anything wrong with that, nor did she.

So its fine to write a encyclapedia but when the guy wants to get money for his effort its suddenly wrong?
She could have just released more information out of nowhere, like she did with Dumbledore, and have the authors continuosly change it while she writes her own encyclopedia...zakkroI hate when people bring that up. It wasn't like she held a press conference and was like "D-dore is gay buy more of my books." She answered a speciffically asked question. Should she have lied?

He didn't write anything. He rearranged her work. Its not like it added anything to the series, it sounded like she was trying to think of ways to get more attention and controversy, she she just decided to make him gay and hoped that people who call her a brave writer for being so edgy.

So did he ever find a man? :?She didn't elaborate, but Grindelwald was the guy he was in love with. She was either too much of a wimp to put in the book, or worried that parents wouldn't let their kids read it.

I personally don't think that she was trying to sell more copies by making the statement. It was just an after thought. Like Tolkien had the Annals of LOTR for all the stuff he wrote, but didn't make it into the final cut.. that would've been in her Annals of HP.

Grindelwald? Seriouslly. that is a terrible name. Sounds like a disease.

This will no doubty cause irepairable damange to her status as an author, many other series have encyclopedias done about them, and the authors have no problem, but her? OOOh that $6,750 from that librarian is sure going to ease her mind. It seems like most other authors are against her doing this too. She harms no one but what is irrepairable; her reputation. I didn't mind her at all before this, but seeing her smug face, like she's had some sort of grand victory is sick, personaly I wouldn't have accepted that money at all, being so succesfull and all. Has she no shame?
A note however, acording the the site, it says that the author of the lexicon wrote too much reference of her book to be truly considered a "reference", if this is the case, with a little bit of editing the lexicon author should be able to have his book published. I honestly don't know why Rowling doesn't try and work with her fan. That would of avoid dealing with the courts completely, and I'm sure the fan would of been enthusiasthic about it.
But her class has an author has suken deep, even though she apparently had a case, there were plenty of better ways of dealing with this rather then the way she went about it. No class at all.
Soon we will be sued by record comapnies for singing songs to ourselves in public. organic_machineOnly if you record and sell them without permission.

[QUOTE="organic_machine"]Soon we will be sued by record comapnies for singing songs to ourselves in public. blackngold29Only if you record and sell them without permission.hmm, I don't think that'd be a proper analogy. This is more like someone writing a thesis on the song, but using one too many samples of the song to describe it. With a bit of editing the lexicon author should be fine.
