[QUOTE="IamLegend316"][QUOTE="Theokhoth"]I'll be honest: this actually looks good. It looks like the only people who wouldn't like it are the "it must be exactly like the game" purists and the haters of Kristen Kruek (sp?). And the director (or producer, whichever) flat-out said that they want to go for something a bit more modern and realistic.Theokhoth
First of all, the director is a hack if you look at his small body of work. Second of all, it doesn't have to be exactly like the game, but it shouldn't be "Street Fighter in name only" like this movie is as it only takes the names of the characters and puts them onto whoever said their lines best at the screen test. This same director took the same approach with the "Doom" movie, and we saw how well *that* turned out. "Modern and realistic" doesn't mean that you have to ignore the source material because the target audience, the fans and the "purists" of the SF series, are going to crap all over it and the average movie goer who they insist on making this movie for, isn't even going to give this movie a second thought. No one wins. When all is said and done, the movie will have a modest 1st week and then be blown off the page when Watchmen comes out the following week.First, every director has to begin somewhere. His small body of crappy work is not only normal, it's expected.
Second, what was the original Street Fighter, exactly? People from all over the world got together and fought. . .for no apparent reason. When the next Street Fighter games came about they decided to add a little backstory for the characters (when you beat the game with them, of course) but still no real reason why they needed to fly all over the world to beat the crap out of random people (who somehow knew how to fly, teleport and shoot fire out of their palms) just so they could go up to the same big boss and defeat him for no explicable reason.
Now, for what Street Fighter is/was (a fighting game), that's perfectly fine. You want to kick ass, not revel in Ryu's emotional turmoil with his hidden love attraction to Ken. But for a movie, which is supposed to have a story and realistic characters with depth, that would be the single dumbest plot direction a person could ever possibly take.
If the movie is like Street Fighter in that source material then yes, it'll suck big time.
However, all I see here in this trailer is that they changed the clothes a bit and actually gave Chun Li (who, o my god, is only half-Chinese and has smaller hips) some backstory.
I'm not saying the movie will be good or bad, but based on the trailers so far, I don't see any reason beyond blind purism and hate for Kruek to think this movie will be as terrible as people are saying. My biggest problem with the trailer is the cheesy "she caught a sword with glowing hands" thing and the corny-as-hell narrative.
The point is the movie is going to be crappy. They should base it off some backstory and actually get actors that at least resemble the characters. They should fix what needs to be fixed and make it work.
And if you can't feel the level of cheese aura oozing from the trailer then you need a scouter.
