First off, as I said, feminism was not brought up once before you started complaining about it.  Second, if feminists have to censor their opinions because of people like mingmao then they're letting their opponents dictate the terms of dialogue.  People like MM are going to portray feminists in a negative light regardless.  It's not any one position in feminism they really have a problem with, it's feminism in general.  Besides, even if feminism as a whole advocates for one position you disagree with (and I think it's worth noting that not every feminist is going to be in complete agreement on every single issue), then it doesn't mean feminism as a whole is ruining things for you, it simply means you have a disagreement.

And how should people take jokes?  How you say they should?  Like I said, just because you say something extremely insensitive or offensive in a joking manner doesn't mean it doesn't negatively affect people, and when you're talking about the entire joke basically being a spiteful crack at someone in a scenario like rape then it affects a lot of people negatively.  Comedy doesn't exist in a vacuum, it's not like when we hear a joke we turn off everything that influences us as humans.  It does influence individuals and people in a subtle manner, and when the joke is simply being spiteful to someone in a bad situation then it's for the worse.

Did I ever say anything like that?  I specifically defended Bill Hicks in this thread, I'll defend comedians like Louis C.K. and George Carlin.  It's not simply being a dick that makes their jokes funny, though, if it were then half of OT would be performing for ballroom audiences.  

Besides, you're essentially stating that there are either two possibilities, that every comedian be some do-gooder who never says anything that offends anyone or that we never criticize any comedian for any joke ever because it's jsut a joke and it affects absolutely no one except to make them laugh.  There's room to have taboo comedians and still be able to criticize certain jokes when we think they cross the line.

It reminded me of similarly petty issues (in fact, the same exact one) I've run across in the past. Sorry for making the past association - I may have been completely off base with that. Anyway, if they put forward their stupid opinions that can be used to delegitimize the movement to a joke in the eyes of various observers, then they've done worse than allow their opponents "dictate the dialogue" (aka, not taking about stupidly inconsequential bull sh!t). The feminist movement as a whole, I can still support b/c there are bigger issues at stake than whether or not people get sad about a joke. That said, it can be an easily abused headline, and this concerns me.

I think that people shouldn't take seriously (or at least make the attempt not to) statements that are not sincere. This is really not complicated and applies to jokes. I never said it would never negatively affect other people (hence avoiding in some situations). That said, sometimes people will hear a joke they don't like. I won't lose a wink of sleep over it, and "offensive" sh!t is numbed with exposure anyway.

Yes, for a couple of reasons.  The most obvious is that religion and conservatism are both positions that people take and can change, attractiveness is not soemthing people can necessarily change.  The second is that by doing so you're reinforcing the harmful practice of evaluating women by their looks.  Is this woman a rocket scientist?  Is she a mother or a sister?  Nope, she's just ugly, so let's make a crack about it.  "You don't need to worry about being raped, ha, ha!  It's funny because it boosts my self-esteem at the expense of others."  Furthermore, the context of rape adds a whole different dimension.  I think if you took a Bill Hicks joke about a conservative being stupid and put it in the context of being raped it would be pretty unfunny by most people's standards.

Jon Stewart isn't making fun of an inherent level of intelligence of any one person, he's making fun of stupidity in their arguments.  If he were to bring up a mentally challenged kid and make fun of him for being stupid it would be a whole different story.

Sometimes 'being a dick' in a certain way is all that makes a joke funny. Comedy doesn't have to have a social-political message.

There's room to have taboo comedians and still be able to criticize certain jokes when we think they cross the line.

Yeah, agreed, but the line you seem to draw-the one relegating any joke that is 'taking a bad situation, making light of it, and then on top of it insulting people who have been or possibly could be in that situation' out of your 'area', is drawing a pretty narrow perimeter and making nearly every modern comedian into a'Taboo' comedian.

Rape has long been a subject of mainstream jokes. So has the holocaust, 9/11 and other somesuch nonsense. There's nothing inherently taboo about making fun of an unattractive rape victim.

Not to mention, If a Joke is funny, it would take an awful lot for the average modern crowd to think it's objectionable at all.
