I think that the M16 is better for more well funded, more well trained militaries of the west (USA, UK, the rest of Europe ETC.), due to its accuracy, stopping power, and light weight, though it is expensive and must cleaned frequently. And it can fire as fast as you can pull the trigger.

I think the AK47 is better for cheaper militaries, Guerilla's, insurgents ETC, due to its cheapness, stopping power, no need for cleaning, and it has full auto for covering fire.

Although they both have good stopping power, the AK is more bigger powerful bullets that can put a hole in you the size of a fist, the M16 has smaller rounds, that are more sophisticated, so you can shoot someone in the stomach, and the bullet comes out their head.

However note that the M16 is much more accurate, you can kill someone from 500 to 600 yards away, with the AK its about 200 to 300 yards.

I'd prefer the M16, though I'm going in the Marines so.... I do think theres no need to upgrade to any more assault rifles for a while though...

So what do YOu think is better???

M16 sounds like a cool choice but it's too expensive. AK is probably more affordable.

AK:

Goood - More powerful + Cheaper

Bad - More recoil

M16:

Good - Easier to control recoil/less recoil + Silencer :P

Bad - More expensive + Costs more

//edit

I do realise i put price twice :P xD

I'm not in the military, but I've heard and read that the specs on an AK are better than that of an M16, so I would probably go AK.

I talked to one of the history teachers at West Point this summer. He's a major who just came off a tour of duty with the Rangers in Afghanistan. We were discussing weaponry, and the AK-47 - M-16 debate came up. His argument was one of the best I've ever heard.

The AK-47 is a weapon for a peasant army. It's inaccurate over a long distance and is designed mostly for untrained spray-and-pray. The fact that you can throw it in a mudhole and pick it up a year later and use it reinforces the first point.

The M-16 is a weapon designed for a professional army. It requires cleaning the weapon to keep it from jamming, which is something a professional soldier would do anyways. It may not have the most punch, and they're working on upping the caliber of the ammo, but it's accurate to 1200 yard, 1600 with the right sights. It's because of that accuracy that he prefers it.

If we increase the caliber of the M-16, it'll be the perfect weapon.

The M16's bolt seizes at any foreign matter being present. It is also a hassle to clean and assemble. The AK47 can be submerged in water, submerged in sand, run over by a Hummer and still picked up and fired. The M16 may be a tad more accurate but the AK47 with its stupendous reliability, ease of use/manufacture and 7.62mm round, it is the far superior weapon.

I go from what I hear. I have heard that in places like Vietnam any kind of grime that gets into the bolt makes the gun either completely seize, misfire or jam. I've never had experience with either weapon (or any firearm in general) but I "believe" the AK47 due to its strong points like ease of manufacturing and superb reliability put it up over the M16.

I have an odd fascination with firearms. One that heavily contradicts my pacifism. I see them more as target shooters for sport then actual weapons for killing things (even though that's what they were designed to do and do very well). I myself would like to get some target shooting guns later down the road, just a simple pistol and bolt-action rifle would be enough.

And accuracy all depends on the ability of the shooter anyways. A M16 in a newbies hands is not going to out shoot an AK47 in a marksman's hands. The M16A4 is a much better weapon then the early Stoner/M16 rifles but its still a more complex weapon that requires quite a bit of training to use.

I thought most Soldiers and MArines of the USA were equipped with an M16A2, and ones that had M203 Grenade launchers, used an M16A4 instead???

My dad was a marine, and didn't think that the M-16 was much more accurate at all.

I'd go with the AK47. More reliable, and much stronger.

Exactly. And that's probably a reason why my father thought the AK47 was about equal to the M-16 in accuracy. He grew up with guns and was a great shot no matter what he used. The M-16 did have advantages though. Like being lighter and less recoil.

The biggest issue against the m16 and what many marines will tell you is its hardware functionality. It constantly malfunctions. once u drop m16 in water, theres a big chance it ll take a long time to fix it.

The AK, on the other hand, trumps the m16 in reliability. It IS the most used assault rifle in the entire world. Dozens of countries employs the ak-47.

Although i like the m16 better. With upgrades, it looks like a beauty.

Well, the AK-47 due to its affordability and ruggedness. Also, it's solid enough to be use as a hittingtool for interrogation, too. In the end, if you think about it, think of a single modern war, chances are that at least one of the sides used an AK-47.

I'm getting mad when I hear "this is better,no this is better"and so on.The truth is here:

M16 is more accurate than Ak47 and heavier. But 47 is more popular than M16 and(did you watch on U-tube) where they tested the M16 and Ak47.They put both guns under the tank, when he was moving. The tank drove over them. And que's..........Ak47 was steel in a good shape and could steel fire, while an M16 was like a pizza. But I steel reader like M16 and better guns than AK47.

jointed

The Ak-47 is crap, its innacurate, and that is what matters in a gun fight. The Ak-47 round is bigger but slower than the M16 round, it has more stopping power but it is less accurate. The M16 is reliable, efficient and gets the job done with accuracy. New weapons that are in testing by US Special Forces, such as the SCAR, have proven to be very reliable. And the M468 is nearly the same thing as the M4 except with a bigger round with more stopping power, without losing accuracy.

The reliability issues have long been solved, with the original M16's they were crap they always malfunctioned and jammed, they had to constantly be cleaned, however now with the M16A4 model those issues are of the past, its is a reliable and accurate weapon.

AK-47

European countries don't use the M16 btw...

And the M468 is nearly the same thing as the M4 except with a bigger round with more stopping power, without losing accuracy.

so how is the AK-47 crap?... you've just gone and said yourself its got more stopping power too...
