Their music is formulaic, easily digestible, and does not bring anything innovative to the table, nor do their songs contain much of merit, musically or lyrically. People like me don't care about their humble backgrounds, for we listen for the music and its artistic value, not the personalities of the performers.

it depends what people consider mainstream. I would consider bands like babes in toyland, blind melon and scatterbrain mainstream because they have had coverage at some point in their careers, but a lot of people would probably go who? if I mentioned them bands.

ah OK, totally different to what I thought then, although I listen to bands like the beatles, beach boys, led zeppelin who could be considered mainstream. If it is just what is popular now in clubs like dubstep, 90's euro sounding pop like Gaga and club hits rap music, then no I don't listen to that.

I am very much stuck in the 1950's to 1990's. I only have a tiny collection of albums that came after 2000 like kate bush and the shins.

I don't think modern music is bad though, I just have so much from the past that my parents gave me and what my brother bought throughout the 90's like nirvana, that I just don't bother.

Depends on what exactly you are talking about. And no, most of today's rock is not innovative. Most of the songs I hear on FM radio and playing in public places and clubs recycles the same verse-chorus song structure, lyrical themes, chord progressions, and 4/4 structure that I've heard a million times.

If it sounds good, I like it. Whether it's mainstream or not has nothing to do with it. There's just as much rubbish music outside the mainstream as there in within the mainstream.

Absolutely. The Killers, The Strokes, The Smiths, The Beatles, U2 and of course tons of other awesome bands- are all mainstream acts and they all rock. Its what Ive always listened to.. I dont understand the whole 'indie' thing. I think "indie" should be a stepping stone for a band, not their whole career.

Personally, a lot of mainstream music I don't like, I don't like because I feel the music is trying to sell me on something other than the talents of the artist. I don't appreciate that.

I don't know why indie has been turned into a genre, like the pixies may be called indie, despite them being pretty well known and selling a reasonable amount of albums. Indie should refer to independent artist not signed to a label or signed to a very small label.

Haha, totally. Indie isn't a genre. How does that describe the music beyond "They have no major label backing". It doesn't. "Indie" is a word, I think- that tries to describe the post punk, new wave revival stuff coming out in the past decade.

Matter of taste much? I've always found JB to be horribly corny music-wise and lyric-wise, at least Gaga is more enjoyable - both of them make generic music to me. There are a few of the mainstream / popular stuff that I like.

A lot of genres have names like that that no longer really describe the music itself. For instance, alternative (which became mainstream, hence, not alternative) and popular (a genre in which you can be a member yet not sell many albums).

Well, I'll give a list of reasons:

-Mostly geared to a market audience of prepubescents and teenagers. Immature market often means immature music lacking depth

-Pop musicians often bypass, or aren't seen in, local circuits. Most artists and bands work for years to get any kind of mainstream audience attention, or label interest, and work ridiculously hard to develop niche audiences. Many pop stars bypass this and go from zero to stardom based on how physically marketable they are to young kids and teens. As there's no musical merit in looking good, these pop stars are often loathed and seen as fake/talentless due to their meteoric rise and the focus on their appearance.

-Their music is oftentimes very very simple, formulaic, derivative, and with the same lyrical theme. The production is often as glossy and overdone as possible. This combination leads to the music sounding fake, and giving people the ability to question if the pop star has any talent at all, to which their bias is already leaning towards "No"

-The idea that popularity = respect is invalid, because most people who listen to music listen to it as background music, for nostalgic purposes, because "the beat is catchy", or because the pop star is popular/attractive. Or any combination of the above. If you asked a Bieber fan to review his latest album, it likely would not go into almost any detail, because the listener themselves do not listen in detail to the songs, with the exception of listening to the lyrics so they can recite them at will :P

-Again, the music is often lacking substance. There's rarely any that makes me think or feel. Rarely is any emotion evoked from me.

Now, some music has hit the mainstream and is pretty good, or even great. It really depends, but it's far FAR less common than the alternative. Which is unfortunate.

Why does music have to evoke emotion? I listen to music i enjoy because i enjoy the pace, lyrics, the tunes, not these half assed messages in a song because someone had a crappy experience. This is not a good way to evaluate music.

Music to me now is so generic. People like Lady Gaga, Soulja Boy are killing music. The way music is made now is so fast that people don't put effort into it. I think the singer of The Who saidthat when there was records back then you HAD to make every song good because you could'nt skip over any tracks. Now when people listen to music if they don't like the "beat" or whatever they just skip it and don't give it a chance. There is so many one hit wonders now. People like Nicki Minaj (don't know how to spell her name) have no buisness rapping. I listen to so many diffrent genres of music, everything from Jazz (Miles Davis) to rock (Pink Floyd, The Cars) to rap (no not Lil wang.... I mean lil wayne) old school rap (like Dr. Dre The Chronic)

In the end, we all enjoy what we enjoy. If you like that LMFAO track, all the power to you. I certainly adore my share of dance music. Of course, I don't find it nearly as enjoyable alone than when I'm in a setting where I'm surrounded by a bunch of friends, but it's still enjoyment nonetheless.

Nah, back when Aqua was popular I loved the crap out of them, and I still do. I like Lady Gaga to a degree. Kanye West is easily the best rapper of the past decade, if not 2 decades. But there's no harm criticizing where criticism is due. Justin Bieber is as popular as he is primarily due to his looks. I think that's pretty obvious, and a person's appearance holds little water when you're discussing the quality of one's music.

i cant say i like it but i dont mind it. it just seems these days the bigger freak u are the more popular and "respected" u are in mainstream music. lady gaga is a huge freak and shes like the biggest pop star in the world these days. theres a very thin line between creative/artistic and just plain wierd in hollywood. and as far as mainstream rap goes, i think its pathetic, there pretty much all lil wayne clones now. whoever is skinny, got the most annoying voice and got tatoos all over is signed. atleast back in like early 2000s and 90s and stuff they actually had the budget in their videos and songs to show the stuff they brag about in their rap.

For sure there was I can show you tons. But the very best like Bach and Mozart is another world than anything today, at least the mainstream.

atleast back in like early 2000s and 90s and stuff they actually had the budget in their videos and songs to show the stuff they brag about in their rap.

idunnodude

So mainstream rap was better in the 90s and early 2000s because...they rented cars and jewelry for their music videos?

I don't mind mainstream music or the people who listen to it, but that said most music today just doesn't do anything for me, it doesn't get me pumped, excited or triggers any form of strong emotional response and a song has to do that or I just don't like it plain and simple.

The market and music industry has drastically changed, you simply cannot compare the music industry and format from the music up to the early 90s to music from the mid-90's and on. It's changed. Lady Gaga, for instance, is one who realizes this, and takes advantage of how the industry works now. Madonna set it in motion, Marilyn Manson gridged the gap, and now she's carrying that torch. And allow me to remind you that while records did often require you to make the most of your time, and to make cohesive albums, a lot of good bands put out a lot of bad tracks. Bands like The Who are revered as legends, yet they also made derivative and mundane tracks like "Magic Bus" and "Squeeze Box". There were a LOT of filler tracks back then, there's a bit more now, but there's not that much of a difference. There are less concept albums these days, so I suppose there would be more filler for certain. And yeah, people do have little patience these days for music. Again, the market and industry have changed. These are the results of heavy rotation and media monopolization.

I just don't like how it all sounds exactly the same.
