I am not a fan of the mainstream music, a lot of the times it all sounds the same and most songs have no true meaning to them.

Because they aren't actually capable of writing music with any sort of depth to it. It's just shallow crap.

I listen to music of all sorts. Whenever the pop music on the radio is playing in my mothers car I listen to it to see if there's anything positive about it. I can't find it. It's all a bunch of people singing about getting pissed, having sex and "getting down it da club with girls with da big big boobies". Also the music itself is the same simple beat in every song. And a few electronic sounds Whereas the stuff I listen to has so much dpeth put into it. Creative lyrics, meaningful lyrics and talented musicians. The music itself is also more intelligently composed. Not just the same beat and a few electronics. But a group of musicians playing perfectly with each other. Dream Theater is a good example of what I'm trying to say. Check 'em out.

I can't stand 95% of popular music at a given time, especially over the past 10-years or so. I find pop music today to be incredibly trite and ephemeral; artists are made because of their appeal to a large demographic that the record companies want to make lots of money off of. For example, Just Beiber is a good looking teen who, with the help of the best voice augmenting technology money can buy, sound soulful and catchy to lyrics someone else wrote for them. In other words, the music is secondary to the artist's image and how likely 7 to 16-year old girls will lionize them. Pop music that us based primarily on the music the artist produces in a thing of the past unfortunately. One must dig deep in pop music's past or scrounge the internet and other resources to find good contemporary bands that actually produce their own good music. So yes, I deeply resent pop music and think it is vastly a big pile of. . well you know :p

I learned to appreciate everything, from Black Sabbath to Ice T, from The Beatles to Lynyrd Skynyrd, from Elvis to Taylor Swift. I just dislike the one's that imo has no efforts put into it or down right unintelligent.

Aye. If there's one trait I value in music, it's sincerity, but I'm not going to shut out all insincere music. It just won't hold the same kind of place in my heart, but I won't stop myself from liking it or anything if it's good. Same goes with concept albums. I'm a sucker for them, but I won't ignore non-concept albums. And concept albums don't even need to be super complex like the prog albums of old. The Antlers is theirs well with "Hospice", which was a simple, bare bones concept album ripe with sincerity and revolving around the loss of a significant other. It acts as a good reminder that wordplay and its delivery is just as vital and legitimate as technical complexity :P

Since I haven't listened to either, I can't tell you whether or not they're good. But I think that your reasoning is sort of messed up.

I mean...you're either good, or you're not. Justin Bieber being only 17 doesn't make his music worse, I'll absolutely agree to that. But it doesn't make the music BETTER. It's still the same damn music. I'm not gonna think negatively because he's only 17. I'm also not going to basically say, "he's good for a 17 year old". The hell with age. The stuff is either good, or it's not.

Same thing with Lady Gaga. I don't listen to her music either. The fact that she "came from nothing" also doesn't somehow make her music better or worse. She doesn't get bonus points for having started life underprivileged. She either makes good music, or she doesn't.

Others will certainly disagree. Others will say that context defines everything, and that the artist is just as important as the art. I mostly disagree. I admit that there can be exceptions, but overall I find that the art should stand out on its own. If it really is good/bad, then I should USUALLY be able to call it good/bad without knowing how old Justin Bieber is, or how poor Lada Gaga was growing up. If that extra baggage is not IN the art, then the QUALITY of the art doesn't depend on that stuff. I should be able to evaluate Justin Bieber's music without knowing his age, the same way that I should be able to enjoy goddamn Cloverfield without keeping up on all of the supplemental extraneous material. I generally think that works should stand on their own, and neither get points added or deducted because of **** like "this artist is poor/young, so give him/her a break." It's either good, or it isn't.

That's not my type of music you posted there so I wouldn't consider that good (my opinion). But "Black and Yellow" by Wiz. K. , is pretty good (IN MY OPINION). There are a few pretty good songs that will come on the radio (seems rare to me though). I wouldn't consider them my favorites and definitely not the best but pretty good. But I don't really listen to mainstream. I may turn to it every once and a while.

Well, black and yellow is definitely a good sports team/city pride kind of track. Can't hate it based on that premise.

funny, she actually hails from the upper east side and grew up remarkably privileged. to say she 'came from nothing' is perfectly absurd.

She also had a burlesque show, and then released two albums under her real name. They both tanked so her or the record company reinvented her into Madonna and she became huge.

that isn't exactly true, her 'burlesque show' (as she refered to it, didn't really follow the guidelines of one but wtv) already had early showings of her eccentricity; she wore jewel-laced bikinis and danced to heavy metal tunes with lady starlight. even her early songs as stefani germanotta bore nods to her fixation with fame.

People hating popular stuff for being popular are lame. Seriously, get off your high horse.

I enjoy listening to Metal stuff like Burzum, Ulver, Nile, Black Sabbath, Opeth and Death.
But at the same I absolutely love listening to Michael Jackson too.

She may have had some elements of craziness in her burlesque shows, but from what I've heard and seen from her early performances she seemed pretty normal. I think her fascination for fame makes the whole thing worse, because it is a sure sign that she will whore herself out in any way possible for attention.

[QUOTE="APiranhaAteMyVa"] She may have had some elements of craziness in her burlesque shows, but from what I've heard and seen from her early performances she seemed pretty normal. I think her fascination for fame makes the whole thing worse, because it is a sure sign that she will whore herself out in any way possible for attention.

TaCoDuDe

At least she can sing though. Unlike Kesha.

Yeah, I don't think she is bad at all, she writes catchy songs and entertains well. I just don't think that she is this huge controversial "new" talent to the industry.

So does Lady Gaga, but most pop songs are catchy so oh well..
