[QUOTE="idunnodude"]

atleast back in like early 2000s and 90s and stuff they actually had the budget in their videos and songs to show the stuff they brag about in their rap.

JML897

So mainstream rap was better in the 90s and early 2000s because...they rented cars and jewelry for their music videos?

lol yeah. i know OT hates gangsta rap like crazy so im not gonna get into that. but hey atleast they showed all the stuff they brag about and had a good time with it. also i think the music in general was better back then. but whatever it doesnt matter what i say cuz u guys will get allpms on me so im gonna end it there lol.

no. at least not wht's on the radio today. it's all vapid and predictable to me. unlike the 80's new wave and 90's alternative scenes when music on the radio was actually good. when it had good musicianship and quality lyrics. these days when i turn on the radio, i hear nothing but watered down electronic pop or hip hop with a beat that sounds like people snapping their fingers, 1 or 2 loops, and people talking into autotune about going to clubs, being "raw", or living a life of glam all topped with a rap solo half way through. this isn't art to me. it's just making money.

Not everything that's popular. There are many artists and bands that have broken Billboard's top 10 that are well received here. Jealously could be an issue for some, but for me, I dislike hearing the same stuff over and over on the radio at work every day.

Lil Waynes mixtapes(or at least the ones I've heard from him) are often candid, loose and imaginative. Yet, sometimes it's hard for him to "speak from the heart" when there's a cloud of pot smoke keeping him focused on poop jokes. Not hating, just acknowledging his inconsistency.

[QUOTE="violentken88"]

Music to me now is so generic. People like Lady Gaga, Soulja Boy are killing music. The way music is made now is so fast that people don't put effort into it. I think the singer of The Who saidthat when there was records back then you HAD to make every song good because you could'nt skip over any tracks. Now when people listen to music if they don't like the "beat" or whatever they just skip it and don't give it a chance. There is so many one hit wonders now. People like Nicki Minaj (don't know how to spell her name) have no buisness rapping. I listen to so many diffrent genres of music, everything from Jazz (Miles Davis) to rock (Pink Floyd, The Cars) to rap (no not Lil wang.... I mean lil wayne) old school rap (like Dr. Dre The Chronic)

Lockedge

The market and music industry has drastically changed, you simply cannot compare the music industry and format from the music up to the early 90s to music from the mid-90's and on. It's changed. Lady Gaga, for instance, is one who realizes this, and takes advantage of how the industry works now. Madonna set it in motion, Marilyn Manson gridged the gap, and now she's carrying that torch. And allow me to remind you that while records did often require you to make the most of your time, and to make cohesive albums, a lot of good bands put out a lot of bad tracks. Bands like The Who are revered as legends, yet they also made derivative and mundane tracks like "Magic Bus" and "Squeeze Box". There were a LOT of filler tracks back then, there's a bit more now, but there's not that much of a difference. There are less concept albums these days, so I suppose there would be more filler for certain. And yeah, people do have little patience these days for music. Again, the market and industry have changed. These are the results of heavy rotation and media monopolization.

Very good opinion sir and thank you for not bashing me. I guess Im just getting older and I am not "in" with whatever it is now haha.

He does'nt even write his own lyrics. It's just a marketing thing. You want to hear a real rapper? Listen to on youtube K-Rino Doin Bad or K-Rino The Session. The production values might not be as high as songs on the radio but he would destroy any rapper on the radio. He don't rap about cars, clothes.

He is nowhere near Tupac's (Makaveli) level. That's like comparing a entry level BMW to a Phantom Rolls Royce.

[QUOTE="Engrish_Major"]Their music is formulaic, easily digestible, and does not bring anything innovative to the table, nor do their songs contain much of merit, musically or lyrically. People like me don't care about their humble backgrounds, for we listen for the music and its artistic value, not the personalities of the performers.Forza4Champion
how can you say mainstream music is not innovative? let me guess. todays rock is innovative? :roll:

You clearly aren't listening to the right kind of rock if you don't think it's innovative...

Its Funny How people here Hate Popular Artists like Justin Beiber..

whats wrong with his music? hes made some good songs,hes only 17 and hes already a millionaire.

Lady Gaga is another Example of a Artist that gets hate for no reason.she came from literally nothing and became an Icon.

so why are these Popular artists not respected here?

why isnt Popular music not so popular amongst users here?

Forza4Champion

This is Justin Bieber singing "BAby baby baby.........two words....then baby baby for the rest of the song..."

Lady Gaga "MY pppppppoker face my pppoker face"

i can give you more examples if you'd like. I never knew repeating the same words over and over again was "singing" i don't care if you were 5, dress like a hobbo or any of that stuff. I just want you to make good music. Nobody is original anymore.

All Lil Wayne albumsAfter the carter 3 are garbage. Why would he even think of making a rock album of all genres. His latest single is also trash. He's getting featured in so many tracks-none of which he performs good. What you're thinking "No Love" then go kill yourself. Eminem after the Eminem show is also trash. I gave up on rap long time ago.

[QUOTE="APiranhaAteMyVa"]it depends what people consider mainstream. I would consider bands like babes in toyland, blind melon and scatterbrain mainstream because they have had coverage at some point in their careers, but a lot of people would probably go who? if I mentioned them bands.Forza4Champion
Brittany spears,kanye west,50 cent,lady gaga,jason derulo,lil wayne thats mainstream.

Thats mainstream within those genres. Mainstream are also The Smashing Pumpkins, Radiohead, Arcade Fire, No Doubt, Bjork and countless other incredible talented artists.

I love mainstream, and I do like songs the incorporate pop elements in order to digest the music smoothly. It really helps seeing the bigger picture a lot of the time.

If it sounds good, I like it. Whether it's mainstream or not has nothing to do with it. There's just as much rubbish music outside the mainstream as there in within the mainstream.

Absolutely. The Killers, The Strokes, The Smiths, The Beatles, U2 and of course tons of other awesome bands- are all mainstream acts and they all rock. Its what Ive always listened to.. I dont understand the whole 'indie' thing. I think "indie" should be a stepping stone for a band, not their whole career.

I'm not going to go out of my way to avoid it and listen to obscurre bands because I want to feel special-- I like Coldplay, and I guess a few other alt. rock acts that can be considered mainstream, but typically 95% of popular music on the radio I can't stand. Hip hop, RnB, none of that.

With the indie artists I do listen to however, I *want* them to become more popular. I'm happy when they release an album and it hits the charts, when they get awards, and when they sell out at big venues.

I forgot about Puddle of Mudd and Godsmack until you just mentioned them. I kind of doubt 50 cent and Lil Wayne will be remembered if only because they haven't been both critically acclaimed and socially acclaimed like Tupac and Kanye have been. Regardless of whether any of the mentioned rappers deserve being remembered. For instance, Tom Waits probably won't be remembered 100 years from now, and he's arguably the greatest songwriter and lyricist of the past half century.

You can't put ALL of mainstream music in one group. That's why I didn't vote. I don't think it matters if a band is mainstream or not. All that matters is if it sounds good or not.

Aye, I feel the same way. When Explosions in the Sky did the music for "Friday Night Lights"(the movie, and some of the show IIRC) and had their work featured in numerous car commercials, I was ecstatic for them. They work so freaking hard and they give everything live, they deserve some long term benefits from their music. I hope when they're in their 40s and eventually break up, that they will have some money to rest on. Unfortunately, I doubt that will be the case. :(

I don't avoid it.

I listen to blink-182, Rise Against, and some others that could be considered "mainstream".

Most of the music I end up listening to just ends up being not "mainstream", not because I went out of my way to make it like that.

also i dont know why people go 'oh you only like rock because it makes you look cool' really? say something on the Internet makes you look cool? i dont see how listening to a unpopluar genre is 'kool'.

No i dont think people will remembered the artists today like the beatles areremembered look at disco back in the 80s, heck i cant really think of any pop artists from the 90s, apart from REM [who are rock]

Most of the time it's the fan base that makes me not like it. My two best friends LOVE Justin Bieber and they just obsess over him. His music contributes nothing and doesn't ever relate to me in anyway. I don't mind a bit of Lady Gaga, mostly the new stuff and Katy Perry's new stuff too. The rest I could not care less about. I honestly wish I was a teenager in the 80s.

Only main stream bands I like is Foo Fighters, and Rush. Porcupine tree as well, if one considers them mainstream

[QUOTE="Bucked20"]

People who don't like mainstream music think they're cool cause they don't listen to popular music.

Forza4Champion

those are usually metal heads. they hate whats popular and wear eyeliner and listen to horrible rock bands no one has ever heard of and think its cool.

I'm a metal head rock fan myself, I don't wear eyeliners. Clearly your idiotic statements clearly justifies your stupidity.

And alot of mainstream hip-hop fans are encroaching into styles of rock, sporting idiotic mohawks, wearing skinny tight jeans, and worst of all wearing effeminate preppy bright clothings. etc.

I love mainstream music because it lets me grind all the chicks in the clubOlimar_the_Min
The only time this kind of music is acceptable. And also partially why it is so popular. :P
