I suppose it might be a good step in inviting everyone to come & eat, but wasn't everyone already invited to begin with?

McDonald's has targeted gay teenagers in a new commercial which local rights advocates say is a refreshing step forward for the fast food giant.

...

Gay advocates have hailed the ad as a "big step forward".

It depicts a young gay man realistically and without judgement and it includes gay people in an institution that, for many families, is an integral part of their everyday life," Australian Coalition for Equality spokesman Rodney Croome said.

"If McDonalds' aim was to make an ad which says 'everybody is welcome' then it has succeeded and I'd strongly urge McDonalds in Australia to do the same."

But other advocates have slammed the ad, saying it fails to hit the mark.

"What does being gay have to do with eating hamburgers?" gay activist Gary Burns said.

http://news.ninemsn.com.au/entertainment/1062970/mcdonalds-goes-gay-in-n

I will rephrase what Gary Burns said/asked.....

"What does being gay have to do with eating hamburgers?"

That is a pretty stupid commercial, it's almost like a teen drama show, couldn't they just show two gay men buying burgers for dinner or something and not some sob story?

I don't see how it relates to McDonalds, but I'm glad they've made it. Finally, an ad with a gay couple doesn't get pulled. I wish that happened in more countries.

Yeah, a place where typically most of the employees are teenagers is sure to be the most gay-friendly place one could go to. Okay, sure.

That advert was crap, McDonald's is for kids and the poor bastards who get dragged their by kids, what self respecting adult regardless of sexuality honestly chooses to walk into McDonald's and fight through all the greasy teenagers loitering in there? :P. Now if sub did an advert with the son telling his old man he prefers a foot-long... :?.

The Iran one was funny though .

Who knows? I guess they're just trying to see if a piece of meat wedged between two buns will catch on with their gay patrons.

The gay activist also said, "The ad should have a more inclusive message based around tolerance and understanding for gay men and lesbians in society in general and not just in McDonald's hamburger joints."

There is nothing wrong with this advert. And to ask that the advert show all these things 'in society in general and not just on McDonald's' is pure idiocy.

Since when is it McDonald's job to do all the campaigning for them?

While you're right I still agree with his intentions. It's basically saying that it's okay to be gay as long as you give us money.

Wouldn't surprise me if this advert made them lose customers. and Mcdonalds are like coca cola, they're so well known and popular that they could stop advertising and probably earn just as much money.

Somehow this is supposed to make me want to go to McDonald's? I don't get the point of the advert, it's not like they've suddenly lifted some kind of ban on gays entering their restaurants.

The younger generation is significantly more accepting of homosexuals than the generations before them. so yes, it's probably pretty gay-friendly.

look at 365black.com, lol. Mcdonalds made an entire website dedicated to black people.

At least a while back, the idea was that a market that had been so largely ignored could be made very loyal at low cost through even minor attention being paid.

Precisely why I like the commercial. It's classy because it's understated. It's suggestive, not explicit. It expects the viewer to be smart enough to figure it out.

It's a nice ad but, since when did gays feel like they weren't welcome in fast food restaurants? It feels like this commercial was made just to have some controversy and allow McDonalds to get more publicity.

Maybe it's trying to appeal to parents too - with the whole father-son dynamic... with the teen drama music in the background.
