I don't take drugs so I don't care much.

But for people who do are not going to stop. So might as well legalize it and suport economy instead of hurting it. But that stuff needs to be regulated properly.

I never smoked weed and never will, but I think this is a good thing from an economic and law enforcement view.

I guess it's good for the economy and such. I only support this for medicinal and useful industrial uses.

But to those who support the legalization, could you answer the following question? I'm curious: If marijuana is legalized, will people begin to take advantage of the law over excessively? I mean, what if people go get high and drive? I mean, it still happens but will it increase? Under-aged drug use? Other issues?

Lilyanne46

It would be regulated, just like alcohol. But in the real world, the questions you ask. Yea, they'll still happen. Like underage drinking and DUI (or maybe in this case, "SUI"?).

To answer your questions: There's a lot of empirical data that suggests that usage will remain roughly the same regardless of marijuana legality. If people want to smoke marijuana, generally they will smoke it regardless. It being legal isn't going to make people who didn't have an interest in using it before suddenly have an urge to smoke it. As for under-aged drug use, making marijuana legal for adult use actually will make it harder for minors to get their hands on it. Reason being, drug dealers don't usually card their customers.

I hope they do legalize it. I have never and will never smoke weed, but let the people live their lives how they want. It will also hurt illegal marijuana sales and it will free up prisons for stupid marijuana crimes.

Plus, anybody who wants to smoke weed already do it. It's not like it's hard to find. Just legalize it already. Businesses can make money on it, they will be more efficient, government can make money by taxing it, prices will become cheaper than illegal sellers can afford so people can buy it cheaper, illegal sellers are going to be put out of business, nobody will be going to jail for weed related offenses.

It's a win-win for everybody.

Why would that increase? It would still be illegal to drive under the influence. And even though marijuana is illegal now, what is stopping somebody who wants to smoke weed from smoking it and then getting behind the wheel? Nothing at all would change except for the fact that the police won't arrest you for buying and using marijuana.

I agree, I hate the argument, "if it's legalised people would be driving stoned and coming to work stoned, and just be ****ed up all the time." Alcohol is legal, most people aren't drunk all the time, workplace policies don't allow you to be drunk and drink driving is still a crime.

After looking into this some more it looks like it has no chance of passing but at least it's a step in the right direction

Article

"The bill appears doomed on arrival, according to the Associated Press, which reported that House Judiciary Committee Chairman Lamar Smith said his panel, which the proposed law is required to venture through, would not even consider it.

'Marijuana use and distribution is prohibited under federal law because it has a high potential for abuse and does not have an accepted medical use in the U.S.,' said Smith, who like Paul is a Texas Republican. 'The Food and Drug Administration has not approved smoked marijuana for any condition or disease.'

Smith cited the theory that pot is a gateway drug, and then added the curious belief that legalizing weed would increase the coffers of drug lords."

Alchohol has a high potential for abuse and does not have accepted medical use yet its legal. Plus weed helps many diseases.

I agree, but sadly the people that have all the power in their hands seem to think marijuana is much worse than alcohol

And being high while driving does not effect the driver nearly as much as being drunk. In some cases my friends have even said it make them more aware whilst driving.

I've done some research on it, and can't find a shred of credible evidence that it's true. If anything everything I've come across says it's just as bad.

IMO, just create a species of it that doesn't smell like crap and I'd be more for it. Cigarette smoke doesn't bother me, but the smell of weed makes me sick to me stomach as if I'm about to throw up. It's one of the worst smells someone can encounter.

Good. I've come to learn that my stereotype that smokers sit around all day smoking, not caring about anything else, really doesn't hold water. This is a step in the right direction if we can say that tobacco and alcohol are legal, and this is especially important for relatively cheap medicine particularly in experimental psychiatry.

Finally, something I can like Barney Frank for. Of course, I expected Ron Paul would be one of the reps behind this, so no surprises there.

Are you sure that they were smoking weed? Or that they should be driving while smoking weed? I see drinking and driving and high while driving the same, in the sense that it poses a high threat in endangering lives. It messes with the senses like any other drug (abused, anyway.)Plus, I don't think that's true. I can't find any facts to back it up...

I can't imagine their reaction time improving under the influence...

I have mixed feelings on legalizing pot. The one arguement I've never agreed with against it, is that marijuana is a 'gateway' drug that leads to the use of harder drugs, should it become legal. To me, this makes no sense.

When I was in high school, if pot had been legal and all we had to do to get some was find an older friend who was of age, then pot would have been the only drug I would have been exposed to. (Sort of like stealing some drinks from our parents' liquor cabinets). However, since pot is illegal, in order to get some my friends and I would go places and meet people that we NEVER would have associated with under any other circumstances. It was these shady characters that introduces us to LSD. I personally never tried coke or any of the other 'hard' drugs, but the exposure was there.Iguess what I'm getting at, is if you don't want pot to be a 'gateway' drug, then sell it in stores, not in some creepy guy's apartment complex.

I think its a step in the opposite direction, you legalize it, then its more distributed and more children will be exposed to it. Not to also mention the fact that many more adults will not be as smart if they were clean.
