About 40 years ago an English band called Black Sabbath created a new genre of music. This genre is called Heavy Metal. This genre was so new, so original that Black Sabbath built up a massive fan base. Most of which were teenagers at the time. Their parents listened to Jazz and Funk or whatever. It was too heavy for them. Heavy metal over it's 40 years of existence has branched out into many sub genres. Thrash Metal, Punk, Grunge, Progressive Metaland many more different sub genres.

But Metal is falling. After 40 years it has become nothing but distortion and screaming about death, sex and anti-religion. This is pathetic. And so metal is decaying and falling to pop music. Which is even more pathetic. And with the recent death of Ronnie James Dio, A heavy metal LEGEND it's not going to get any better. Unless the next generation of heavy metal musicians have something NEW! to offer the genre it's going to become a thing of the past.

The metal we hear today has no distinct qualities. It's just this band trying to be as good as all the other bands, and so they end up sounding almost the same. There's no creativity involved. This saddens me to see metal die. I want to be able to enjoy newer music. But I can't unless new bands actually offer something original.

Cue the dozen or so heavy metal fans on this forum making impressively-long lists of bands that all sound distinct, whilst having enough tact to avoid mentioning the superfluous number of dubiously-categorized subgenres.

Eh I thought Blue Cheer "created" metal. Oh well they sure inspired it no doubt.

I agree. Bands like Sabbath, Saxon, Iron Maiden, Dio, Metallica, Judas Priest and so on so forth, are the legends of metal. Nowadays it's horrid vocals, and most songs sound the same (Yes even some Metallica songs follow a similar structure)

Disturbed and Avenged Sevenfold shed some light in the genre. Hell they're not bad at all but don't compare to past bands.

Ha ok. But imo they're the only decent metal bands today and like I said they don't compare to past metal bands.

Lady Gaga has more of a chance at saving the genre (not that it's in trouble) than a cookie-cutter rock band like Disturbed.

If you don't get metal in all it's many forms that developed over the years then don't act like it's dying, because you literally have no idea what you're talking about.

It has been obvious for about ten years now that progressive metal is the only metal sub-genre taking strides and doing new things.

Death, thrash, doom, blah blah bull****...it's all the same, and it all sucks. Progressive metal is where it's at now, and educated musicians recognize that.

You don't know **** man, for one, punk is definitelyNOTa branch off heavy metal, it came from other roots such as rock'n'roll and bands like The Stooges.

Also you obviously havent heard much modern metal, there are TONS of good bands emerging its just they're mostly all underground now that stuff like metalcore and generic death metal have taken over the scene, in fact theres a whole movement in the last few years which has resurrected thrash metal called the new wave of thrash metal, also there are still other quality heavy metal acts emerging who have that old 70/80's sound with a modern tinge, metal may be going through a weak phase at the moment but in a few years maybe more of the good bands will go mainstream, you just need to search harder and you will find that there are tons of great bands out there. You cant just judge a scene by its mainstream, the mainstream and underground are basically different scenes in metal and basically every other genre.

Real progressive rock/metal is indeed original. It takes on a metal sound, but it doesn't take from metal so much as it takes from jazz with respect to rhythmic properties, composition, and song structure. It is the most sophisticated of the metal genres, which is why you are substantially more likely to find formally trained musicians playing in progressive metal bands. It has the aggression of metal with the textural depth and theoretical substance of jazz and classical music.

It's the best.

Progressive metal is stagnant and has been for quite some time - very few musicians in the genre are pushing the boundaries anymore. Most are ripping off Dream Theater or are still stuck playing the same annoying melodies in different keys. "Progressive" no longer means "pushing boundaries" and instead means "fill a song with as many ego-stroking, soulless solos as possible." However, avant-garde and most "technical" (death) metal artists like Gorguts, Ulcerate, Crowpath, Gigan, etc. ARE pushing the genre in new directions, and that's where the best music in the entire genre of metal is in my opinion.

All music has a defined structure, including avant garde metal. If you listen to a song, you can always pick out a structure, even if it never repeats itself. Progressive metal redefines contemporary notions of structure; it expresses itself differently from any genre of music, yet remains tastefully contained at the same time.

Avant garde metal is merely progressive metal without any direction, substance, musical purpose. It is not pushing any boundaries. It consists of undisciplined musicianship that attempts to be extreme just for the sake of seeming extreme. There is nothing "sick" about it.

I'm agree.

However, despite what any of us claim about Progressive or any other genre, it's nice to prove TC that Metal is nowhere near dying, we came from traditional bands like Disturbed, going with Black Pyramid, then Heavenly, Dream Theater and now Avant Garde...yep, Metal is dying.

Ah, nop, couldn't disagree more with this, calling bands like DSO or Angizia undisciplined and without any substance is, well, a huge mistake.
