I'd imagine there should be a few good bands kicking around though I don't much listen to metal anymore. Why are the sub genre fighting though?LJS9502_basic
Subgenres shouldn't be fighting at all. There's good metal artists in all of them, although fewer in some...

I'm agree.

However, despite what any of us claim about Progressive or any other genre, it's nice to prove TC that Metal is nowhere near dying, we came from traditional bands like Disturbed, going with Black Pyramid, then Heavenly, Dream Theater and now Avant Garde...yep, Metal is dying.

madsnakehhh
Yeah, I didn't mean to come off overly aggressive or cynical. Even in progressive metal there's a lot of bands that aren't stagnant, but since I don't really listen to much "pure" progressive metal I don't know of many. The TC just needs to accept that just because he doesn't like newer subgenres of metal doesn't mean it's dying, it means it's evolving - in other words thriving.

Pull me Under. You tell me that isn't a masterpiece. James Lebrie has the voice of an angel and the music consists of some of the most talented musicians on the planet.

DmadFearmonger

Yeah, Dream Theater has some incredibly talented musicians alright. Too bad they make incredibly sterile music.

Because metal is, beyond a shadow of a doubt, the most split fanbase of single single base genre. Take a hundred pop (or most anything else) fans and a hundred metal fans and put them in separate rooms, and I guarantee you the metalheads will be at each others' throats much quicker. On-topic: ITT: Too lazy to really look for anything decent. Metal isn't dying.

Beside the odd talented drummer and guitarist, most metal or any "core" genre is complete tripe these days.

It has been obvious for about ten years now that progressive metal is the only metal sub-genre taking strides and doing new things.

Death, thrash, doom, blah blah bull****...it's all the same, and it all sucks. Progressive metal is where it's at now, and educated musicians recognize that.

Communistik

Except that Prog. metal is terrible.

Well. You've persuaded me with that brilliant critique. You must be right.

It's more or less the same type of critique you gave of death/thrash/doom metal, except that you don't seem to realize that death, thrash, and doom all have different sounds to them...

Damn, I don't know about you guys, but metal is great. I still discover great new bands every day. But then again, I'm not too high and mighty to listen to death and black metal. In fact, death and black metal I think are the best things metal has to offer. Suffocation for example...:P

Metal isn't dying, it's thriving. The only difference is that it's now pretty much entirely underground whereas the days of Iron Maiden, Judas priest, Black Sabbath, and so forth it was hugely popular. As a result you now have to look around a little to find a good band but trust em it's worth it. Metal is more diverse than it ever has been and there are still many excellent bands out there.

Metal isn't dead, it has evolved. It has melded with punk in the last decade and a new distinct form of it has emerged, but there are still plenty of "pure" metal bands who still exist and who are still great. One band that immediately comes to mind is Amon Amarth, and this is coming from one of those metalcore 'idiots' that metal elitists hate. Even though I like metalcore more than metal, I can't deny the awesomeness of Amon Amarth.

I'm far from a zealous die-hard metalhead but I think most people really don't understand what metal is. I can't post a link to some thrash metal band and say "that epitomizes all metal". It is not just the same, and the difference between thrash metal and death metal is about the same as the difference between bebop and hard bop. Is it a different genre? Not really, but no one would argue that bebop and hard bop are the same thing. The music, at its core, is built up of different elements. Exactly the same with thrash and death metal. The instruments used may always be the same, it may at first listen sound somewhat similar, but it's not just the same crap.

Thankfully all types of music are immortal. Yes even the rap/hip-hop of mainstream we all...ok most hate. I do kinda agree with the lack of originality, or more-so finding your own voice in the crowd. Only bands I found that are good in the last few years are Steel Panther, Amon Amarth, Unsun, and one or two more I just can't think of right now. I've been finding myself expanding my musical tastes exponentially than when I was a pure-rap fan. Celtic music and whatever Blackmore's Night creates defines music at the core for me.

Heavy Metal did not so simply start with Black Sabbath, the story of the formation of Heavy Metal is one told throughout the ages, one I shall recite here.

*Opens up a huge dusty bible engraved with skulls and runes*

In the beginning all was darkness, that was how the first ones preferred it, for they were so hideous for even they could not bare to look upon themselves. Then came the fire beast, a giant monster of flaming molten iron who roared across the sky like an angry commit. His metal body burned so brightly it illuminated the world and all it's hateful creatures, he was ormagóden, Cremator of the Sky and the first ones loathed him because it was his light that forced them to see themselves as they truly were. So they hid underground and dreamed of a day when they could murder the fire beast and rid the world of his light forever.

The first ones spent their days feeding from Madronal, the titted tree of drinking, they suckled from her bark a thick nector that flowed up from her roots, which penetrated the ground so deeply they reached even into the 'untouched place' there a beautiful being known as Aetulia sang to the roots of Madronal, and the tree turned her song into nourishment for the ungrateful creatures above. One day the greediest of them sneaked into her sanctuary, and trapped Aetulia in a cage, forcing her to sing only for him. That is how he gained unlimited power over all creatures, and became their first and most terrible king.

The king used the song of Aetulia to lure the firebeast Ormagóden to the ground, where the first ones trapped him and tried to douse his flaming body with mud, rather then me extinguished the mighty firebeast let out an earth-shattering scream and exploded like a sun. One Million pieces of his flesh shot into the ground, veining it with ore, his fire flew up into the sky and became The Sun, there was so much blood it flooded the world, drowning all the first ones as it formed the oceans, his death cry was so loud that it echos throughout the world to this day. Low creatures fell the God Omagóden, but his death gave the world it's elements from which a new era would rise. Blood, Fire, Noise and METAL.

From the oceans of blood came new life, the worst of which was the tainted coil. Which the twisted forms of The First Ones but the angry power of Ormagóden they were hated, feared and almost exterminated. Instead they were saved by a majestic race of titans who inherited the streagth and size of the fire beast and the purity and beauty of Aetulia. They took pity on the small creatures and adopted them as pets, they hid their deformaties with severe restrictive garments, and the coil endured the pain because more then anything else they wanted to look exactly like their beloved merciful masters.

The tiatns mined Ormagódens steel flesh from the ground, and found it retained the beasts defire for speed. They forged swords that flew from the air so fast they could not be seen, and armor so light it made their warriors run faster, they made chariots so quick it was hard to find beasts fast enough to pull them, and so they abandoned the beasts and made giant vehicles that moved with their own power! These colossal hotrods were a rolling temple to Ormogóden, forged from his gleaming flesh, they had a mighty engine for a heart that roared with the fire Gods death cry, scattering the Titans enemies as they carried their civilization across the globe.

After she was used to lure Ormagóden to his death, Aetulia was left to cry alone in the darkness for an eternity. She wept for so long her tears turned into an ocean of pure sorrow, and she turned to dust. Whoever drinks from this ancient sea of black tears is granted some of Aetulia's power, but also cursed with her all consuming grief, most tear drinkers go mad and destroy themselves and everything around them in a murderous rage. The titans dropped a mountain on top of the sea, to keep themselves safe from it's allure, but it is said from within the cracks of the mountain you can still hear Aetulia singing, inviting passers by to come lose themselves in her sad waters.

Titan civilization exploded with new art and technology, their cities flourished with culture and echoed with the sound of pounding metal as gleaming sky-scrapers were hammered out of Ormagódens flesh and vaulted against the sky. From this collision of artistic passion, invention and sonic overload a new kind of music was born; it was as hard and heavy as The Fire Beasts metallic flesh, it had the power of his blood, the heat of his fire, the speed of his flight and the mighty roar of his death cry... But it also had the angelic beauty of Aetulia's song and a touch of her mournful wail. It's words told the story of a fierce and noble age, it was an anthem of the people and they called it... HEAVY METAL!

There are plenty of bands willing to expand their horizons. The problem is that everyone's perception of metal is the cookie-cutter deathcore and metalcore bands which are the closest metal bands to the mainstream.

I agree Ragek. Whenever I mention that I like Metal to someone they immediatly think its all about cookie monster vocals and satanic lyrics

Metal is doing pretty good it hasnt been this popular ever .. However there are lesser forms of metal wannabes who steered metal into basically pop. aka metalcore.

So i would say in the words of chuck "you cant kill metal". but in my words, it has an annoying wana be sold out lesser half brother lol
