So I come back to this thread.. Only to find myself insulted many times just because of my beliefs... That's gamespot for ya..00-Riddick-00
Considering you think that it's okay to deny people the right to equality because of your personal opinion, I'd say it was to be expected.

To be fair saying "I don't support gay marriage" in a thread about a politician who advocates banning gay marriage does kinda imply that you agree with that politician.

She's polling quite highly right now, unfortunately, along with Perry and Romney.

Well..if it comes down to those three I hope Romney wins the nomination. I don't agree with him on a lot of things but at least him being elected wouldn't absolutely terrify me. Those other two would.

I wouldn't say that in and of itself is prejudice. To give a personal ancedote my grandmother was a very devout Christian. Had been all her life. Yet one of her friends was a gay man. And she cared deeply for him. I dare say she loved the man. I once asked her how she felt about his lifestyle she said "I know what the Bible says, I know ain't right. But that's between him and God".

Of course they can. That's why Bachmann is allowed to continue expressing hers, and why others are allowed to continue expressing their beliefs that the citizens shouldn't vote for her to become the president.

Relativity of views, and the ability to see merit in one's arguments. Two parts, really.

I dont see how relativity of views can "save" any view from being called "ridiculous". Unless one goes by an absolute "everything is relative" philosophy...

Also maybe some of her views have no considerable merit.

Even both sides of the isle stand by and would like a balanced budget. If you see no merit, then you (speaking generally) are not looking hard enough and letting pre-conceived notions cloud judgment.

As is often the case, the devil is in the details. It's not bad that she advocates a balanced budget, but how she proposes it should be accomplished is.

From your perspective, but the point of the matter is that common ground can be easily found among your opponents; finding none means you're purposely ignoring ideals, or are just not looking hard enough. As a strong fiscal conservative, and social moderate myself--I do not have issues finding the merits of my opponents arguments in what they believe; although I may be a bit more fair-minded in that regard to actually contemplate looking at such.

I'm a bid fan of being open minded myself, and can see the merit in multiple camps' stances on many issues (such as the pro-life/pro-choice issue), but I'm also a fan of looking at the effects of the individual stances/policies taken and whether or not they would be beneficial or harmful. The end result that I see from Bachmann's proposed policies (were they to be enacted) is a resulting situation in this country that is worse than what we find ourselves in now.

I didnt say that all of her views have no merit.

I said some may have no merit. I was very specific with my wording.

So bringing up an example of her views that has probably some merit doesnt add anything to the discussion.

I find the same thing about Obama :|

Agree or disagree with his views (and for the most part, I don't agree with him on many things), he's at least pretty sane, and knows what to focus on more importantly. Michelle Bachmann, Rick Santorum, Rick Perry, and any other Social Conservative running this election have some pretty ridiculous views, and most importantly, not worrying about the more important topic: The economy (or even worse, act like they know what they are talking about dealing with the economy).

Yes, it does. When you toss aside the preconceived notions, you just might find more common ground than you'd think.

Edit: Perhaps my faith in people possibly being open-minded about these sort of things is naive, and rather misplaced. Hmm.

This again? Really? Obama mispoke and admitted as such. Bachmann regularly demonstrates an ignorance of history and then when called on it likes to say "Nu-uh, I totally wasn't wrong because..." and then proceeds to make jumps in logic to justify herself.

And Obama doesn't know the US has 50 states... these are mistakes for a reason, you know?

*sigh*

This again? Really? Obama mispoke and admitted as such. Bachmann regularly demonstrates an ignorance of history and then when called on it likes to say "Nu-uh, I totally wasn't wrong because..." and then proceeds to make jumps in logic to justify herself.

I have to agree with Stevo in this instance. Bachmann is crazy, but she clearly just meant russia when she said the soviet union.

Edit: Perhaps my faith in people possibly being open-minded about these sort of things is naive, and rather misplaced. Hmm.

Stevo_the_gamer

I think you're trying a bit too hard to make it seem as if finding some of her views ridiculous is the result of close-mindedness. :P

You are misinterpreting that--it is aimed towards individuals who knowingly go out of their way not to look for common ground, and continue to perpetuate the divisiveness that is hurting my Country.

That may be true for some, not all.

Like I said some may think that only some of her views are ridiculous. If they thought all of her views are ridiculous no matter what, I guess we could suspect they are being stubborn but otherwise I dont see how we can say that close-mindedness is what's going on.

And the division in your country could be largely caused by the politicians themselves. Have you ever pondered that possibility?

Did you actually read my post beyond the word "mispoke"?

Stevo_the_gamer

Do you actually believe Bachmann didn't make a simple gaff/mistake? I mean... really?

Case in point: When in her hometown of Waterloo, IW she claimed that it was the hometown of John Wayne as well. Well it wasn't, John Wayne never lived in Waterloo. She then tried to claim that she wasn't wrong because John Wayne's parents had lived in Waterloo. Using her logic I'm from Maine (although I've never set foot in that state) since my mom lived there as a child.

What a great community; calling you racist and homophobic, and discounting your opinion, just because of your beliefs. Some of the people posting here are just as bad as Michelle Bachmann.

I don't believe gay marriage is right, but I don't have anything against gay people. And quite frankly, I don't care if a candidate supports gay marriage or not.

No. Had it been a simple mistake she would have simply said "oops, yeah my bad" rather than leaping through logical hoops to justify herself.
