Have you ever pondered that possibility?Teenaged
You tell me. Do politicians fit my definition earlier? Of knowingly going out of their way not to look for common ground, and perpetuate the divisiveness? Is the recent debt debacle clear enough of people crossing their arms--head shaking--and not making true compromise? What about my thoughts here? Do not tell me you are knowingly looking beyond my comments here and thinking it does not apply generally across the board...

No. Had it been a simple mistake she would have simply said "oops, yeah my bad" rather than leaping through logical hoops to justify herself.

worlock77

The GOP congresswoman told CNN on Tuesday her comments "were just misspeaking" and that her main intent was to show she identified with Wayne's patriotism."I wish I could be perfect," Bachmann said. "I'm a substantive, serious person" who has "good sense on how to turn the economy around" as president."

It can't get any clearer than that. :?

Judging by the other thread with the comments all her motivation appears to be religious in nature.

That is quite a dangerous thing.

Well, now that you have, what about your thoughts now? Does Obama still get a free-pass on his simple mistake?

They dont have to be doing it on purpose in order to be considered one of the major causes of it.

Yes obviously voters themselves can and do cause some of the division.

And we could theorise that the ideologies of politicians become so extreme (or at least not moderate) because they try to cater to demographics whose views are also extreme. In which case the initial cause is the voters.

But do the politicians' personal ideologies play no role in what they choose to support? Obviously they do, and a lot, imo.

What a great community; calling you racist and homophobic, and discounting your opinion, just because of your beliefs. Some of the people posting here are just as bad as Michelle Bachmann.

I don't believe gay marriage is right, but I don't have anything against gay people. And quite frankly, I don't care if a candidate supports gay marriage or not.

I don't stand by Occam's razor, and my science studies have always ushered me to never believe there is one solution to a problem, or that there is one cause to an issue. The variables can be endless, but from what I was discussing--the reasoning ever resounds true. I agree with you last part, there are alternate motives in supporting plans or individuals--that is a side effect of politics, and has been apart of it since the the Greco-Roman (and before) times.

I hope Bachmann wins the GOP nomination because Obama would sail to an easy re-election. I find it hilariously amazing how the best GOP candidates get no love. Huntsman has little support and funding. Romney can't win over his right wing base. And Ron Paul is treated as if he doesn't even exist.

I don't read every single thing she says and from what I know about her so far several of her plans are questionable in my opinion. But going by what I said, that does happen alot since OT is mostly ultra-Liberal. She may genuinely be an idiot or she is just misunderstood. I personally don't care as long as the right person goes into the White House in 2013 if Obama doesn't get reelected.

I said some may have no merit. I was very specific with my wording.

So bringing up an example of her views that has probably some merit doesnt add anything to the discussion.

Stevo_the_gamer

I was aware of your wording, hence why I said the apparent possibility of there being no merit--apparent possibility is key... which is unlikely.

Some people find that some of her positions to have no merit.

Hey, idiots need a figurehead too right? Bachmann is just that, she's a bigoted idiot. Doesn't help that voting is anonymous so no one has to express their idiocy to the world if they do vote for her.

But since I still have faith in the human species, I know she won't win the presidency. If she did then sadly it looks like The Road would be a true story and the world would plunge into an apocalypse.

No, the idea that somebody has to find merit in any position is PC nonsense. So you can put that strawman away. I never said finding common ground is nonsense.

I'll find common ground in arguments I can find common ground in and I will completely disagree with ones I completely disagree with.

That's normal. Trying to force oneself to find common ground if they entirely disagree is pendantic, PC and a waste of time.

Again, you are twisting my words.

Just because one has clear disagreements doesn't mean they are close-minded.

There are some things that I simply am not going to agree with. That I don't waste my time forcing myself to finding common ground where there is none doesn't make me close-minded.

Everybody has things that they don't agree with in any way. They shouldn't have to pretend to find some kind of common ground with those ideas just so satisfy some PC pendantic notion of open-mindedness.

Finding common ground in arguments is nonsense? Please.

Stevo_the_gamer

Thats not what he said.

"The notion that you have to try to find merit in all arguments is PC nonsense." That sounds more like a--I'm completely right, you're completely wrong no matter what situation to me. >.>

It only sounds like that if you're into twisting words.

I never said I was completely right. I'm saying that some arguments have no merit.

In no way does that say that I'm completely right.

I see no twisting--you can easily have clear disagreements, but that doesn't mean you should discount the individual entirely ...

And I wonder how you conclude that.

I believe that anywhere (forums included) civility isnt the only thing needed but also not trying to make strawman arguments.

It doesnt mean you mustn't discount the individual entirely, either.

I am speaking generally about any general discussion--if you pull that card out, it definitely sounds like one's position is the be-all-end-all and the opposing has no merits to it. :/

Yes, you are clearly twisting as I said nothing about discounting the individual entirely. I also said nothing about open mindedness. you brought that element into the discussion. If you are not twisting, then you're reading comprehension is severely off.

I am simply saying that one doesn't have to find common ground on everything and the notion that they do is ridiculous. There is nothing wrong with saying that some ideas have no merit. Only someone who is unreasonably PC would suggest that there is.

It doesn't matter what it sounds like to you.

What matters is what I said. And I never said anything about me being completely right, so you're wrong on that count.

All I said is that sometimes one finds no merit in certain arguments and there's nothing wrong with that.

This what started the entire conversation in regards to Bachmann here--the discussion has resounded on her as a whole... at least form my perspective that is how I view it. You can discount individuals ideas, but the overall picture I cannot see how it would be practical--yet alone possible.

As a Republican, she scares the s*** out of me -- not just politically, but also the inevitable ramifications her winning the Republican nomination would have upon the Republican Party.
