Personally I would have had the mother arrested for poor parenting. I was told around the same age that matches are bad and I took heed of their words and to this day I avoid matches at all possible unless I am camping and need to make a fire.

Yes, because the best way to correctly discipline a child is to traumatise them.

Yeah I think that crosses the line into permanent traumatization. I think there are a few better ways to extract proper behavior from your children.

I kind of agree with it. The kid will always have the lesson that "Bad behavior will have consequences" in the back of his mind when he decides to do something. Plus, the kid wasn't harmed in any way, and I doubt this will "traumatize" him as people have suggested.

Doesn't anyone else see this is a waste of time for the police officers. Is she too stupid to discipline her children on her own?

Don't think that's the way of teaching a child, especially of that age.. A policeman maybe talking to them would of been okay, but that is over the top.. great parenting ;)

The article does not give a lot of details. However I think if the child was under the impression that he was in this situation because of his mom (like she called the cops on him) then i think that could also drive a big emotional wedge between the child and his mom. My father used to threaten me by sending me to the orphanage when i was around that age and i remember it still decades later with anger.

Exactly. If she wants to do something over the top. She could have called a fireman to explain to the kid why playing with matches is bad. Having a small child arrested is probably frightening and maybe even traumatizing even if the cops do it in a "nice" way. You just don't do something like that to your children. Not only is it irresponsible but as I said in my previous post, a waste of time and police resources. Policemen shouldn't be called in for stupid situations like that.

Agreed, is wasting time on a situation which should be dealt with by the parent, i see this as poor parenting..

That would be a clever thing to do on, say, a 15 year old doing more seriously bad things.

It's a bit unnecessary for a 5 year old, though.

I'd be fine with someone doing that to a 10 year old... but isn't 5 a bit too young? :?

My dad was an MP in the Army; when I was 5 or 6, all the families got taken on a tour f the stockade and I got "pretend arrested and locked up" and cried my head off until they let me out. I empathize with the kid, though at least he was guilty of something.

Effective parenting doesn't need to be questioned. And if that kid doesn't play with matches again, she did a good job as a parent.

Just because methods are unorthodox, doesn't mean they're incorrect.

If you seriously can't keep a 5 year old kid from playing with matches on your own, maybe you aren't fit to be a parent.

I don't see the big deal, the cop didn't beat him to death, he just handcuffed him and put him in the back of a cruiser. There's far worse parenting out there than having your son get mock arrested.

Too extreme they say. Well guess what? The kid won't be playing with matches anytime soon. And the "trauma" will go away pretty darn quick. Unless you're all inferring when you were around 5, every huge scare marks you to this day. ...No? Okay then.

I can't believe people think what this mother did was good. Obviously shes a horrible mother if her 5 year old kid is playing with matches, thats horrible she has her kid fake arrested. My dad once was on the phone before pretending to be a cop when I picked it up when I was a kid, I was scared to death and I still remember it and it's one of the reasons I don't like him. Maybe one day this kid will grow up to be a murderer because his mom was so horrible then you won't be laughing will you?

Ok, if she tried several times to tell her lil one that playing with the matches was wrong and not safe, then I can see the desperation of her actions. I mean you really wouldnt want your kid to burn the house down and kill everyone inside of it, yanno? ... But I would have handled it a little differently. I would have had a fireman come over and had a serious talk with the kid... see if I could persuade the fireman to dress up in his fire suit, and convince the 5 year old to be a jr fireman, and prevent fires instead of causing them. Make the kid feel helpful in a way. Reward him for saying he wont play with them again, stickers are a five year olds friend, and a jr fireman hat would be the most special present ever! :) get it? ... but I can see why she did it, cause she was desperate.

There are kids whose parents are perfect and they grow up to do bad things and there are also terrible parents whose kids turn out to be great. It's not like she watches every single thing he does. Who does that? Only sheltering parents. Now that is bad parenting. The kid can find these things out on his own.

I know he can find out those things on his own but his mom doing this kind of stuff to him isn't going to make him a good kid. If you seriously think having a 5 year old kid fake arrested is good then you've never experinced bullying or felt what it's like to be tormented, this mother should be arrested.

joshrocks2245

Kids get into things when you arn't looking. A parent that can watch a child 24/7 is a parent who won't be doing anything else such as feeding the child, working, sleeping. You;'re naive if you don't think kids get into things and that if they do that makes someone a bad parent.

The kid will grow up to be a murderer because his mother disciplned him? What an over the top reaction. I think what she did is far better than parents who beat their kids when they do something bad.

I don't think it's anyones buisness. By the way, why is no one angry at the cop who went along with this? If it was such a terrible thing, why didn't he say no? It's not like she did this all herself, a cop willingly went along with it.
