Batman has ALWAYS taken a backseat to the Joker across all the media they have battled in. Even arugably the best Batman story ever told, The Killing Joke, was nearly all about Joker. This isn't a recent thing.Neoyamaneko
Batman never was an interesting character.
I'm going to have to go with the Dark Knight. I'm not saying it's not a good movie, I actually think it's a great movie. It's just not heaven on earth like lots of people are running around claiming. It doesn't even make it in my top 20 favorite movies.artichokeIt doesnt make into my top 40's for me. Personally my MOTY is 21. TDK was good, but I felt that the ending was abrupt, but you know its leaving it open for a sequal. Heath's performance was good, but for me it wasnt mind blowing like everyone says it was, it was just what I thought it would be, Bale played a good Bruce Wayne but a weak Batman, and Aaron Eckhart was just brilliant in my eyes, my favourite performance of the lot. Certainly kept me interested the entire time and offered some laughs, but it's not the best thing since sliced bread. Good film, but not the second coming of Jesus like people make it out to be.
Also, add on Superbad, Hancock and even though it came out last year, Transformers. I get a lot of flack for this, but it just bored me at times and the lack of original theme music disappointed me.
Transformers, but I don't know if that movie was rated highly.Lonelynight
How could I forget Transformer? One of the worst movies ever. I don't know what people saw in it.

I really a hate the main character.

Oh and BTW I find this "The Dark Knight is overrated" bandwagon hillarious. Anyone else notice that the counter-culture is the cooler thing on here meaning "It's cool to hate on the popular things"?

Ah the internet.
Well... I'm on no bandwagon.
I was unimpressed by the Dark Night ever since I saw it, and have made that vocal on several threads here since.
What I think is hilarious is people who can't except other people criticising their current obsession, so would lump people on a "bandwagon" out of pure intolerance.
So far the only crticism I have heard is that "Batmans voice is annoying".
It is one thing to simply say you don't like it, but people keep calling it overrated without any reasons WHY and yet I have spat back in those peoples faces exactly all the aspects of the movie that do in fact make it great.
You weren't asking me but here's mine. Yes Ledger did a great job, so did Ellen Page in Juno and it sucked. TDK was a complete mess for almost half way thru, Ledger being the exception. Two-Face had so much more potential to be used the way he was, WTF with the Rachel storyline, just..., the moral choice on the two boats was laughable. Anyways the voice thing was fine by me, and it was a good movie, just not the end all be all, and not better than Batman Begins. Everyone here acts like it's the second coming and I just didn't see that. I also thought I might have been overhyped to see it, so I went again 2 weeks later, same thing.
How was it a mess?
Yeah Two-Face had lots of potential, but who's to say his part is done?
The Rachel storyline was INCREDIBLY IMPORTANT to bring Two-Face about.
The moral choice went along with the theme I thought.
Haven't seen Batman Begins so I can't compare the two. I will say that yeah, it wasn't the greatest movie ever, but it definitely ranks up there on my list of favorites.
BTW thank you for presenting some reasoning. This is seriously the first time I have seen someone give reasons other than "Batmans voice is annoying" and this is far from the first time I have seen someone hate on the movie (And yes I do realize you aren't bashing it truely but I couldn't think of a better term).

1) Well, that's kind of hard not to do with a film as young as The Dark Knight.2) No, you should excuse them. When many people are saying a movie is the greatest of all time, better thanother people's favorites, and they say it's overrated because they don't think it's one of the greatest films of all time, or the greatest, I would never say to them "You're just trying to be cool".
3) Yeah, and not everyone thinks "Wow, he deserves an oscar" and "Wow, this is the greatest of all time". True, not the majority of people are saying this, but a lot are, and I wouldn't call people who call that overrated "Just trying to be cool". I think it's far more likely someone really does think it's overrated.
Neptunian
1) So? My whole point had to do with how old thos particular movies were not just that they were older than TDK.
2) Very few people are claiming it to be the best movie ever. BTW did you not see the list of posts in this thread saying TDK was overrated yet gave no reason for it? It is easily the cool thing on here.
3) ok name a better performance in a movie this year. I dare you. Ledger's performance is one of the best I have ever seen. The people discrediting him on this are just being stupid (yes personal opinion only goes so far) and are THE best examples of how it is cool to hate on TDK on here.
1) Regardless, many of the older films still had as many votes as The Dark Knight.2) Not everyone HAS to give reason on this board. You have no reason to claim they're trying to be cool. Because they don't explain their reason isn't really evidence that they're trying to be cool. That's sort of a logical fallacy.
3) I've only seen about 3 movies this year. Most of the people I hear saying his performance deserves an oscar haven't seen that many movies this year, either. I'm not saying they're wrong, but I'm saying that they are a bit uninformed.
1) If true then it still isn't a truely valid point as there are plenty "classics" that I have found to be incredibly overrated after watching. I don't care how much you like a movie not everyone feels the same way
2) When you see close to 20 posts at the beginning of the thread listing the movie all with no reasoning then yes I have a point. Not to mention I have gotten into discussion on here about the movie and none of the DK haters could list legitimate reason as to why the movie wasn't great.
3) And how many people actually go out and see every movie that comes out? The whole point of hype and reviews is that they point out the outstanding movies so that you can go check the good stuff out. I have yet to hear of any movie that came out this year that had hype over the acting. Those movies will be coming out this Fall which will be the real test. Sad thing is I am guessing that Ledger will lose the oscar (if they put him up for it even though he passed away) to some lame drama performance involving the same crap overacting we see up for the best acting awards EVERY YEAR!
1) Yeah, and I don't see how that's any different than when people claim The Dark Knight is overrated. Both The Dark Knight and classics are loved by lots of people.2) Not really. Plus, why do they have to offer reasoning. Maybe their reasoning is as simple as "I just didn't care for it". Nothing that MUST be said. The thread isn't asking for essays. Plus, what's great is subjective, and if they didn't like it, then they didn't like it. Nothing allows you to conclude "You're just trying to be cool" because the question they answered never said "Why do you think this movie is overrated?". They answered the question with their opinion and you're making invalidated claims about them. My GUESS is because you really liked The Dark Knight and you don't like when people don't think the exact some thing you do about it.
3) I was saying they've seen very few.
1) Yeah but classics don't get as much baseless hate.
2) BECAUSE IF YOU ARE MAKING A CLAIM LIKE THAT YOU SHOULD HAVE SOME REASONING BEHIND IT!!! There in lies an issue though, there is only so-much that is subjective. As someone who has studied film and is considering it as a career, I can tell you that when you take apart the movie and look at all its elements it is a great movie.
And no I mentioned that there was a bandwagon issue with hating on TDK which is obviously there you just can't recognize it because you think the movie is overrated yourself.
3) Yeah I know and I was basically agreeing with you, lol. Like I said the real test will be the Fall lineup of movies where all the sappy dramas looking for awards come out. I personally don't see his performance being surpassed as I found it brilliant and it is my personal all-time fav performance, but hell I couldn't have guessed my fav performance would come in the form of a Batman movie till I saw Ledger as the joker....
It doesnt make into my top 40's for me. Personally my MOTY is 21. TDK was good, but I felt that the ending was abrupt, but you know its leaving it open for a sequal. Oh god yes.
I remember my friends made me see it with them opening day, and I hated it.
I did not understand why so people raved about the film.... I only left the theater empty, wondering why the film was so unsatisfying.
Transformers, but I don't know if that movie was rated highly.Lonelynight
I think it was rated as the top movie of the year or there abouts. I liked it, the idea wan't great but it had something special about it, not quite sure what it was though.

The first hour was trying to put in many plot points some of which played out over the whole movie, some of which just stopped. I hope Two-Face isn't done, great character to only get what 20 minutes or so. Rachel, yes it was important for Dent/Two-Face, but Batman just looks down during the rubble scene???WFT she was his "love" and so on. Watch Batman Begins, you'll love it, again it's very linear compared to TDK, every scene has a purpose. And I did like the movie, it's just not the greatest thing ever, maybe a 7.5 or 8 out of 10. Just too many flaws for me.
Also gonna say Wall-E, my biggest disappointment of the yearzepman71im questioning whether or not you have a soul

I still don't understand this complaint of yours. I had no issues with the plot or its pacing.
So his reaction wasn't done terribly well, still not that big of an issue anyway.
I actually saw Batman Begins last night and thought it was pretty good, albeit nowhere near as good as the Dark Knight. The Scarecrow was a pretty cool villain.
300. I bought it after hearing how awesome it was. I dont see what was so great about it..AgileNate
People are really hating on a lot of excellent movies here. TDK, Fight Club and There Will Be Blood...are you kidding me? And 21 being the best movie of the year? LMFAO....The only character I was moderately interested in was Kevin Spacey's, kind of reminded me of him in 'Swimming With Sharks'. And although I enjoyed 300, I would say that's the most overrated.

How's Hancock overrated? Come to think of it, how is 21 a good movie? I dunno. Different movie tastes I guess. I will say now that I enjoyed 21 more than Hancock, and the enjoyment was on par with TDK. Hancock had a good idea going up until
You find out that the guys wife is really his and that they have to be apart to continue being superheros and living forever. Also the film didnt really have a central plot apart from trying to get people to like him. And at the end when he flew away I said to my friend "oh look hes going to the moon" jokingly, and then he did! It just bored me at times and the lack of a real plot disappointed me, but really it didnt even look like it had one from the start.
Like I said, different tastes in movies.Sorry to say it, but TDK. Great movie, but many people are considering it their favorite movie of all time. I honestly think if Heath Ledger hadn't died people wouldn't be as crazy about it. He did do an amazing job in the movie, but the film as a whole didn't flow at the level that a masterpiece should.
I just think TDK tried to be a serious crime drama and muddled together too many story lines thru the first half. After seeing Batman Begins and all the serious talks him and Rachel had, I just expected more, maybe in the next one? Once they hit China it started to really get good. But as I said in the other comments there were too many flaws in it for me. Again a good movie, even very good. Just not the greatest of all time, or even the year, which many (not you) people have been saying on here for weeks. And partly I wanted it to be great too, I may have been a little overhyped for it.btaylor2404
IDK I could see this being the best of the year, but we still have the crazy fall movie season to go through before anything can truely be said. Obviously though, calling it the best of the year when we still have almost half a year left is kinda stupid....

Especially when Wall E was a superior film.

In Bruges is better than both:P
Wow, I've seen a lot of Juno votes. I loved it.
But I would vote The Dark Night. Too long, little direction in some parts of the film, and can't hold a candle to Burtons batmans IMHO.
