I think the most underrated band is Metal Church. Opinions?
This topic is locked from further discussion.
I have never heard Metal Church but if they are a metal band I am not going to agree. Though I do enjoy a few metal bands I do not see the genre as important if that makes any sense lol.
I cant think of any truly underrated bands I listen to but if I were to pick two I guess it would be Animal Collective and Arcade Fire, even though both of their previous albums gave them a small bit of success.
Glassjaw. Or The Pixies.xTheExploited

I don't know where you find some of these bands :P
But anyway I do know a fair few. Cocteau Twins I would certainly agree. Maybe Orange Juice too, although Edwyn Collins arguably got the recognition he did/does deserve. The Damned I actually quite like even though the rest of the punk community mocked them for being a little contrived (interestingly including Siouxsie Soux).
EDIT: I've noticed you've popped the Levellers on there as well – it's funny how they disappeared off the radar alongside the rest of the 'traveller' scene. I caught them once – had a fairly strong following there for a while but they've been forgotten it seems these days.
That's made me remember a couple of bands I'll add to the list:
New Model Army
Therapy? (EDIT again - thought I'd dig some out for nostalgia -Therapy - Screamager)
On Off-Topic, Nickelback, definitely.
I don't think they're any good, but they're not the spawn of satan here to corrupt the music industry and cast all good music into the bowels of hell, so they're a WHOLE lot better than most people on this site give them credit for being.

The Damned hell yes.

Nobody seems to mention them as an influential punk band. Them, and The Saints are two of the punk bands that people forget about. The New York dolls are not mentioned very often too but I wouldn't call them underrated.
I would put them in my top 10 favorite punk bands probably. "Damned Damned Damned" is a flawless album.
Hm, I don't know. Dr. Dog, maybe. Also, this isn't a band but rather an artist, but...Elliott Smith. Lastly, jazz in general.t3hrubikscube
elliot smith you say!,
Keeping in mind that underrated =/= not popular enough, I'd say Elvenking. Hated and overlooked, but a damn good band.
Doctor Feelgood- by the way,The Smiths ripped off them, big time.
Also, Brand New.Haven't heard of them? That's why I listed them - oh, and shame on you.
I read through this thread and couldn't think of any, but then I was listening to Augustana and thought "Hey, these guys are underrated." That brought me back here. If you like soft rock, only one of their songs is popular and it wasn't really that popular...but they are probably my #1 band, just because all their songs are good, not just a few.
The problem I have with these threads is that everyone always just names bands that nobody has every heard of. Under-rated does not mean unknown.harashawn
Already covered that ;)

Birdhouse in your Soul grabbed everyones attention in the UK for a bit, but unfortunately after a few listens I think it started to irritate the **** everyone. I guess after that they were doomed. Still had the same niche followinng always did though...

"The Mesopotamians" is a great song.
[QUOTE="Rikardur"]Closer to being overrated than underrated. That's nice, chief. If you haven't realized, Sunn O))) make love or hate music, and many dislike it when there are people who actually love this kind of music. I'm included. First and foremost, I love the atmosphere and the presence of the music. I just need patience for it, which is something I have developed as my musical tastes matured. So you don't have to listen to it and you can return to your not-overrated-at all Burzum :roll:Sunn O)))

Have you heard their latest song from the new album though? sounds pretty bad compared to their first few albums...Keeping in mind that underrated =/= not popular enough, I'd say Elvenking. Hated and overlooked, but a damn good band.

Honestly... those two bands underrated?
Both have had mainstream critical and commercial success.
I can think of a few that i feel are under rated as rock bands, but of course these are all based on my personal opinion of them as bands.
-Counting Crows
-Sister Hazel
-Hootie and The Blowfish(their entire library, not the popular stuf)
-Hanson (before you overract, they've had some later albums, since they've grown up, and actually have some real solid acoustic rock)
-And maybe Train( before Hey Soul Sister that is...not anymore probably.)
While I realize these bands have had moderate commercial success, I just feel they're a good example of bands that are known, but not given full credit for the quality of their music over the course of several albums. Oh, and of course the Beatles. Kidding.
The Pixies. So many bands became popular trying to copy their sound.psychobrew
Underrated by whom? Certainly not by the music pres, nor by the adoring masses that swamped to gigs which were pretty well-attended back in the day. I think they'll be justly remembered in the years to come and their influence won't go unnoticed.

if you listen to that many underrated bands, there is a good chance you might just like crappy music.
