I like the genre because it's really loose. It doesn't always have to be about talent and skill. Sometimes the feeling is more important.

what do you mean by the feeling?
the emotion that the song gives you i think?[QUOTE="Film-Guy"][QUOTE="Nifty_Shark"]I like the genre because it's really loose. It doesn't always have to be about talent and skill. Sometimes the feeling is more important.

the emotion that the song gives you i think?I dont really get an emotion from poor guitar playing and annoying vocals by people who think they know something about politics or anything else important.

again, not really a fan, I cant stand their bassist or their singer. Also their " Oh we are so hardcore" attitide is annoying. Most punk bands have no idea what they are talking about when it comes to politics.
actualy jhonny knew exactly what he was talking about.hes alot smarter than people think[QUOTE="Film-Guy"][QUOTE="THE_DRUGGIE"]What about the Sex Pistols?basketcasetct

nah I prefer the clash. Mostly because they can play their instuments well, they dont have a fake hardcore attitude, and they are actually smart guys who know what they are talking about.
film guy will hate me: i prefer green day (old and new), simply because they have catchy hooks (i don't care if they sing about politics i think their music is catchy)Well i was thinking to myself of how to give a good example....OK I think this could work. Take Pantera and Nirvana. One group is about mad skills (OK Anslemo's singing is debatable) while the other isn't but still manages to make a real impression on you. Kind of like the difference between I'm Broken and'and Stay Away. I'm Broken is showing off Dimebags guitar skills and s*** whereas Stay Away is just a song that keeps rolling with simple playing and yet both are good even though one song is more difficult than another.

they were one of the first punk bands and thats what Brit punk was about being a sharp witted snot nosed brat and trying to shock people. they were very influenced by the media in the latter part of their career[QUOTE="basketcasetct"]Sex pistols are the best Punk band hands downFilm-Guy

I agree they are smart but the clash were influenced by the sex pistols.and despite what you believe they are thought of as a good live band except for the bassist who wasn't very goodWow, way to give an opinion on an entire genre of music. I'm sure the "many punk bands" you've heard over the twelve years of your life hardly scratches the bottom of the barrel. I can't even begin to list great punk bands with amazing guitar players, but I need to point out that the voice of the singer is subjective, and your dislike of a singer does not mean the band is bad. Oh, and The Stooges are one of the greatest bands of all time, and although Iggy's voice may be subjective, Ron Asheton's guitar playing is not.JamWithKetchup
I listed iggy pop and the stooges as one I liked a lot, sorry to confuse. I do like iggys voice and the guitar playing. And I am not 12, I am 17 and have heard tons of punk music, its jsut not a genre I like as much.

Would Iggy pop and the stooges count as the first punk band? they had their first album in the late 60s, before the ramones, the sex pistols and the new york dolls.Film-Guywell on mp3.com, it says the ramones are the first punk rock band

you really shouldn't use wikipedia for this kind of stuff. The songs had aggressive garage rock feeling and are considered punka few years ago I used to love punk music ( i wasnt a punk, I just loved the music) but a lot of the punk bands sound too similar. I have heard so many punk bands over the years, from iggy pop and the stooges, to classic 70s, to hardcore punk of the 80s, to the 90s punk revival ( which was some of the worst) But most of them have boring singers, not very talented guitar players, and most of their sons are soo similar. The clash actually knew how to play their instruments and had a unique ( although not very diverse) singer. And before you tell me I have not heard enough punk, I have listened to pretty much most of it, whether it be mainstream or independant.Film-Guy
I was the exact same way. I listen to a lot of Metal now, but I do listen to a different sounding Punk band called Relient K, I suggest that you give them a listen if you want a different sound in your Punk.

I used Wiki because it was handy. Nonetheless proto punk is not punk itself. It influenced what became the punk bands....but wasn't punk. Rather common knowledge. Hence, the different name. *yawn*

yeah jhonny is an intresting guy though there isn't much to say about the rest of the bandMeh i find diversity through Boy Sets Fire, Bouncing Souls, OLD AFI (now they are mainstream and many dont consider them punk anymore...but i still love them...old and new)..... Umms, Rancid...all of them sound different to me o_o Perhaps you should turn the music down....or up? :?
Edit: oh yea i almost forgot bad brains, and then theres the misfits (old vs new...debateable which is better), and the subhumans.....who completely rocked my socks off live ^_^ that was one great show..
Husker Du, The Minutemen, Fugazi, The Ramones, The Clash, Black Flag... None of them really sound like each other, when you get down to it. Husker Du was more melodic, the Minutemen were experimental, Fugazi was also very experimental, especially in electronic music, The Ramones were poppy... Great, but poppy. The Clash experimented with everything from raggae to lounge music... Black Flag was probably the most straightforward punk group in that whole list... Greatgone12for every two that are different there are 5 that are the same but that happens to every genre so people shouldn't complain about punk

Except Sid Vicious got his own biography. Starring the amazing Gary Oldman.
