This trend is very encouraging and if it holds, it robs the anti-gay marriage folks of one of their most effective weapons (public opinion). However, I don't think that it will have any real effect on Republicans in the short term, though it will effect them significantly in the long term.

Also, now the people that hide behind majority opinion can find some other excuse.

An encouraging trend, but I don't agree with the bolded part. Politicians are very good at being political weather vanes. When something is no longer popular and when it looks impossible to change that, politicians will just casually stop supporting it, and then claim to have always opposed it. I imagine Republicans' opposition to same-sex marriage will no more harm their future political aspirations than did Southern Democrats' support of segregation, etc.

Perhaps I worded that badly.

What I meant is that this trend is not going to cause any re-ordering of Republican positions in the short term. It won't be until the long term until it becomes enough of a factor to make them change their stances.

Also, I think that the issue will cause some problems with the base in the somewhat distant future when gay marriage supporters outnumber the opposers even more.

However, I agree that Republicans will probably adapt.

I agree.

Anyone that supports the idea of all people being treated with the appropriate respects and rights clearly needs to find something else to do.

I don't mind them getting married but I still have a problem with them raising kids. I think kids deserve to be raised with one mom and one dad. I just know if I was a kid I would be kind of pissed if I had two dads or two moms, it would weird me out to much. Not to mention it be hell at school if anyone ever found that out.

The majority has just started to approve of it. These things take time.

Also, it's still not going to happen without a fight.

Hmm. Who would be in the "wrong" in such a scenario? The kid who just wishes they had a dad and mom, or the parents who might have a problem with their child wishing one of them just "wasn't"? Kid grows up in that environment yet just seems to be repelled by it.

From someone without parents, I can honestly say I'd rather be raised by a mom and a dad. I was fortunate enough to be adopted into a normal family, thank God. I would not have appreciated getting adopted by two "dads."

Not true. Just because the majority of the public wants something does not mean that the majority of politicians want that same thing. There are plenty of examples of policies that the majority supports that aren't even considered by the government for various reasons.

A personal study that I've conducted found that the majority of voters prefer no taxes, while supporting the construction of high-speed monorails that run on skittles and feature monkey butlers.

Perhaps, but I was old enough to have formed an opinion on the matter, so I think I still would have found it unnatural.

You're right, being in favor of equal rights is totally a waste of my time.

Now I don't spend time actively campaigning for gay rights (there are issues I care more about and would rather devote my time to), but that doesn't stop me from supporting them, or voting against legislation like Prop 8.

This is pretty expected. It's impossible to convert a person from pro-SS marriage to being anti-SS marriage because the all arguments against SS marriage are so bloody moronic, so naturally there will be a net conversion rate of anti-SS to pro-SS among the population.

Yeah society has become a bit more pro gay. I was talking to a professor at my college about the topic and she said that they used to have intense class debates about it in the past but now days it's safe to assume that most of the class will be pro gay marriage. ... of course I go to very liberal Lutheran liberal arts college in Minnesota.

I like the way things are going. Its nice to know that within my lifetime, I will be able to see a country where gay marriage is legal in every state and I will be able to watch as the right wing's fascist, bigoted ideals are eviscerated in one state after another.

doesn't matter sadly when the minority that holds the view also hold the power in congress, etc.

Its encouraging though, but still 2011 and people still think that its a sin to allow gay people the right to marry

Some people also belive the earth is 6000 years old and flat. At least the bigots are becoming a minority though.

Why does having different views than you make people bigots?

Discrimination towards certain groups does that.

we call opponents of the gay rights movement bigots because they

- build their stance on the idea that there is something wrong with gay people, and yet they fail to prove a solid reason why. generally, unfounded disdain for a group of individuals is called "prejudice."

- seek to deny gays equal rights in marriage, adoption, the workplace, religion, the military, and in general society

- consider gays to be inherently unnatural or morally inferior.

Which in turn didn't meet the actual definition of the word bigot and generalize like crazy in order to statsify one's view.
