Don't underestimate the fear of intervention and the power of conformity. Look at Nazi Germany for starters if want to look at this kind of human behavior on a broader scale.

Please though don't lose faith in humanity and forget our capacity to do good.

This is horrific, but sadly, not that rare.

I remember a case here in the UK some time ago where a person was attacked and left to die in the middle of a busy road, and people just went by without stopping to help, even after the attacker was gone....they even swerved round the victim's body to avoid her. Really, really sad :(
