/Rant

what do you all think about this. I think I'll never be able to quit smoking because I'll have to catch all 36 images... It sounds like a better game then Pokemon... Truthfully though I wish they would just leave me the **** alone... I'm sick of paying double the price for a pack because the federal tax is one dollar and the state tax is another dollar... The government shouldn't be allowed to try and make my choices for me like this... If I want to smoke it's my freedom to do so. Nothing else has such a High Tax rate on it... I could be buying a pack of Pyramids for One dollar, but no its 3 because the government sucks. 200% taxes are cool...

I think it's idiotic. This anti-smoking stuff is getting out of hand. Either make it illegal or leave smokers alone. Anyone who smokes already knows the risks.

Wow. At this point, its universally know that cigarettes are unhealthy, why **** on people who choose to smoke them anyway? I don't see pictures of people lying naked in the front yard on my bottles of vodka.

If you do smoke a lot, you won't really care that much. We already have these graphics on cigarette packs in Ontario, Canada. And guess what? People still buy them ;)

I don't think this has as much to do with going after smokers as it does going after people (namely children) who are thinking about smoking. People who already smoke aren't going to let those graphics stop them, quite frankly. But a kid who is thinking about starting to smoke who sees it may have second thoughts.

Just because people still buy them doesn't mean they don't care or aren't affected by the graphics. It's disturbing that people would want to subject smokers to this kind of torment for absolutely no reason other than disagreeing with the choices they make.

I believe that if someone smokes already knows the risk, this anti smoking thing is getting out of control, I won't be surprised if soon we see a 10 buck price on a pack of cigarrettes just to avoid people smoking They think that raising the price will make people stop smoking, they are just delluding themselves, the numbers decrease because the average joe can't afford a pack of cigars.

Sure, but sometimes kids have to see what the risk can lead to...scarring them out of smoking before they start.

Yes, agreed 10x. I mean, why even have it be legal if you're going to put smokers through all this trouble? It's idiotic, they should just let it alone. Most everyone knows the risks by now.

Why though? Cigs aren't illegal. Tobacco companies shouldn't be forced to make their product appear scary when it's 100% legal. Like I said, either make it illegal or leave smokers and tobacco companies alone.

Like I said, if you are a smoker and you really need to smoke, you will learn to look past the graphics to get your fix. And if smokers get tormented by the images and have doubts about smoking, then the government's goals of getting people discouraged to smoke are working.

Welcome to Canada and Australia. Also, here stores aren't even allowed to advertise that they sell cigarettes or even make them visible to the public, so every convenience store with a cigarette wall or cabinet has replaced the glass with wood or curtains so you can't see a damn thing.

The State tax in New York on cigarettes is around 4 dollars... Most places don't want to increase the price that much because they know it would keep people from being able to afford a pack and they depend on the tax for the lot of things. It's dumb that they say the tax is to help people quit, but they won't raise it to much because they know to many people would quit and then they would lose a lot of funding. One of the many reasons I'm against the taxes because they are just singling us out to make money on us instead of truly wanting us to quit.

That's ridiculous. I hate this whole anti-smoking stigma. If people want to enjoy a pack every once in a while it should be up to them, not the government.

but do you think it's really the governments place to do that? If they think it's such a bad thing and that they have to tax and use stupid scare tactics to get people to quit why is it not illegal?

It's not a matter of being illegal. Rat poison is legal and there is the skull and cross bone image on it used to let those who don't know what's inside that it's dangerous. Those images are used to scare of those who shouldn't have the cigarettes in the first place.

It is ridiculous, but in many ways I don't mind. I think of cigarettes in much the same way I do marijuana here - don't care if someone smokes, but for god's sake do it in your own home or somewhere private where I don't have to smell it. I'm glad it's been banned from restaurants/bars and within ten meters of any building, although you still get smokers who wander around while puffing away and blow clouds in peoples' faces.

Great. So why isn't anyone proposing similar images on bottles of liquor (a product that's actually allowed to advertise on television)?

It's not for underaged smokers who are not legally allowed to purchase the product anyway. If that were the case, then there would just be harsher penalties for giving kids access to cigarettes.

The sad thing is, I bet there are actually a ton of people who think that way. It's so stupid. It's like the people who say "This is the twentieth century, and people still smoke?! They must be uneducated pricks!" Anti-smoking sentiment is one of the most annoying things out there.

What I'm surprised by is the Government supports this. The tax from tobacco sales generates billions of dollars in revenue both state and federal.

Yeah, I wouldn't endorse that. On the other hand, I don't really have a problem that Canada's implemented those sort of pictures on cartons and ads, because the people who ruin their health are then covered by my taxes. It's not as clear-cut in the US.

I would also say that this is mainly for people who either dont smoke alot and kids. As soon as they see these graphic pictures they should prabably realise that its not the best thing to do and back away from it. I think this is great that they are doing this.

Rat poison is not meant to be put into people's bodies. Cigarette smoke IS meant to be put into people's bodies.

We need more people like you. I'm fine with both as well, in fact, I'm pro-legalization (but let's not get into that here), and I'm OK with them banning it from restaurants. It's just ridiculous to me that people will go to such lengths to stop people from smoking when in this day and age everyone knows the risks.

Like I said there is other ways that kids can get their hands on cigarettes with out buying them...like taking them from their parents. So harsher penalties for those who sell them to kids isn't the issue. And while I haven't stated this...I don't really agree with the images on the packs of cigarettes but I can understand what they are used for.

Men i'm not a smoker but I think i'd be pissed if i were getting a lot of hate for doing so, I don't like smoking but i will never ask someone to stop if they don't want to it's called freewill.

The worst Anti-Smokers is those that walk up to you when you are smoking and just start yelling at you because they hate the smell. I always go to a place away from other people when I smoke, but I'm shocked by the number of people that will what up to me (when I'm complete out of there way in a field or something) and start raging at me for smoking and saying that it smells bad.

What I'm surprised by is the Government supports this. The tax from tobacco sales generates billions of dollars in revenue both state and federal.

That's true, and another thing worth considering. I think it's a result of health care becoming more and more centralized. They don't want to have to pay for people who smoke having issues later in life, but regardless - that doesn't mean they should put casual smokers through this nonsense.

[QUOTE="the_ChEeSe_mAn2"][QUOTE="Dark__Link"] Just because people still buy them doesn't mean they don't care or aren't affected by the graphics. It's disturbing that people would want to subject smokers to this kind of torment for absolutely no reason other than disagreeing with the choices they make.W1ckedGo0se

Like I said, if you are a smoker and you really need to smoke, you will learn to look past the graphics to get your fix. And if smokers get tormented by the images and have doubts about smoking, then the government's goals of getting people discouraged to smoke are working.

but do you think it's really the governments place to do that? If they think it's such a bad thing and that they have to tax and use stupid scare tactics to get people to quit why is it not illegal?

Because the tobacco lobby is very strong both in USA and in Canada. So it is more easier and less burdensome for the government to saddle up the industry with regulations and rules rather than force a ban outright. Besides the high taxes on cigarettes help fund my "socialist" health care system in Canada, so the only time I really mind smokers is in public places where they blow their fumes right in my face.

Honestly, if you don't know by now that cigarettes are harmful to your health, then you deserve to die. Nobody I know that smokes has been informed of the health risks and went "Gee, I never knew about that. I'm going to quit right now."

My friend and I always have fun with these kinds of people. If you're self-rightous enough to tell me off, then you better prepare to get **** with.

[QUOTE="MrGeezer"]

[QUOTE="despa1r_fact0r"]It's not a matter of being illegal. Rat poison is legal and there is the skull and cross bone image on it used to let those who don't know what's inside that it's dangerous. Those images are used to scare of those who shouldn't have the cigarettes in the first place.despa1r_fact0r

Rat poison is not meant to be put into people's bodies. Cigarette smoke IS meant to be put into people's bodies.

And I'm sure that all those chemicals that are put into cigarettes are ment to be put in the human body. I guess it's not poisonous if you take in acetone, tar, ammonia, and nicotine (just to name a few) :|

Yes they are if that's what you're choosing to buy them for.

What about the kids who don't know what's in them...you know the ones who would understand an image more than words.

it's time to switch to electric anyway. i was a 2.5 pack a day smoker for years and will never go back after switching.

every other time i quit i though about smoking constantly now when i do think about it i think about how much better electric is.

no bad smell, no secondhand smoke, not counting hardware cost i pay about $10 for 2.5 weeks of vaping. my health improved, my gf (and the entire world) is off my back about smoking.

i cannot recommend it highly enough.

the only thing i would tell you to do is start out with the right hardware and liquids.

my favorite is the Tornado electric cig. and the liquid made by viking vapor.

seriously, you don't have to be big tobaccos, big pharma and the governments little ***** anymore.

Find me a kid in this day and age who doesn't know the risks. I'm 18, and it's pretty much drilled into your heads in school.

Better hurry before the FDA bans those too.
