I'm not dodging...your not reading. You're dodging the argument.
You've stated that the skull and crossbones on a pack of cigarettes is reasonable because cigarettes contain known poisons.
I've provided an example of something else which contains a known poison, and you are against putting a skull and crossbones on that.
Therefore, it is reasonable for me to conclude that the fact that cigarettes contain poison is not the reason why you think it ought to have a skull and crossbones. If your argument breaks down as soon as we start talking about something that's not tobacco, then your argument is flawed.
MrGeezer
I have never said that the skull and crossbone was reasonable on a pack of cigarettes...pirate700 said that on the 1st page :|
I have never said I was against putting a warning label on fish (nor have I said I was for it either), but I did say that the FDA warns that certain people shouldn't eat fish - I said that on the 3rd page :|
And I also have stated that I don't agree with the images being put on the cigarettes, but I can understand why they want to do it though - I said that on the 2nd page :|
don't put words in my mouth...Thank You.
Leave smokers alone. They already pay up the wazoo, it's the least the government could do.
Having said that, I'd have to disagree with everyone here saying, "people who smoke know the risks." You can't truly know and appreciate the risks until the worst happens, just like anything else in life. I believe if people actually had an inkling of what they'd have to endure and suffer through to fight what smoking causes, they'd do their utmost to quit ASAP. Then again, some people smoke through a hole in their throat while going through chemo and radiation so it goes both ways I suppose, but by then they're on death's door, so what's the difference?
I don't see the problem. Most kids are aware of the risks of smoking, but they might not truly understand them or how serious they are. If images like these help deter them from picking up the habit and smoking a couple packs a day for the next 20 or 30 years, then good.
On the other hand, if you're already aware of the risks and don't care enough to stop smoking. These images aren't going to stop you, and honestly probably aren't really even intended for you.
To be honest, if I wasn't fully aware of the dangers of smoking and smoked anyway, I'd just view the pictures as hyperbole.Leave smokers alone. They already pay up the wazoo, it's the least the government could do.

But the message is larger now, and more graphic! ;)I'm sure that smokers will quit if they are reiterated the dangers of smoking yet again.

Most, if not all people have already seen those smokers' organs photos some sort. Furthermore, it doesn't make the idea of dieing on an average of 15 years earlier than the average person, or the idea of having various sorts of cancer any more displeasing. More of a nuisance than anything actually.

The pictures are pointless, it's just insult to injury and will not work. The sad fact of the matter is most need personal experiences with something to understand, be it smoking or whatever.
Yeah, I can see a law suit already over a kid who gets trumatized from the images on his mother's cigarette pack, lulz.
I've meet people with that... when they talk it's so COOL, but the hole thing doesn't happen to many smokers. You have to smoke Packs a day for years to be that pro. btw I am from Colorado (Born in Boulder lived in Longmont) I love the one with the guy smoking out of his trachea. That actually makes me want to start smoking. It's like a super power or something. Anyway, This is really going over the limit. Everyone who smokes knows what will eventually happen to them, so why force it in their faces?
Oh, and TC, are you from Colorado?

For the love of the children don't put these pictures on the packs because children will start collection all of my cigarettes... I want them for me. they can't have any.I'm sure that smokers will quit if they are reiterated the dangers of smoking yet again.

I found the PDF with the purposed images... my favorite one is number four... the Cartoons ones are really funny and I would totally buy those packs, but some of the others ones are a little... um....

Odds are the new graphics aren't going to work anyways so I'm not throwing any hissy fits. Any people who choose to smoke have already made up their minds. More or less really its a whole bunch of health groups who want to do this(not saying anything bad about them, just merely saying its them), and the government slapped it on there. There never going to bother removing smoking though, way too much money to be made in that so kudos to you smokers for feeding the government money.
I don't think the graphics are for those who already are smoking, but for those who might not know the risk...mainly kids.I don't think you'll find a kid anywhere that doesn't know the risks either. Well maybe that's because of the ads?[QUOTE="despa1r_fact0r"][QUOTE="Pirate700"]
I think it's idiotic. This anti-smoking stuff is getting out of hand. Either make it illegal or leave smokers alone. Anyone who smokes already knows the risks.

I'm just doing my part to pay for this screwed up country. It's the FDA wanting to put the images on the packs. The Government is sure trying it's best to single out smokers and screw them over side ways betwixt there legs with a pole ax.Odds are the new graphics aren't going to work anyways so I'm not throwing any hissy fits. I seriously doubt that would be their intent. Like I said, there is a lot of money to be had with smoking. In Britain I believe its something like£10 billion pumped into the treasury per year. Can't be bothered to look up what the number is on your side of the border but I'll go on a limb and say that its potentially a lot more (if not roughly the same). With that said, i'm damn sure the government would prefer to not have to slap on those labels/deterrents since anything that would hurt their revenues from smokers(and they know it) would definitely be considered bad in their books. More or less really its just a case of them doing it because of pressures from other groups(i'm willing to bet its not just the FDA).
It's stupid the stop smoking ads, they need stop drinking and stop fatty food ads as well then. They don't have warning:poison on cheese products.

But they are gaining the funds under a lie to the public. They say they are taxing cigarettes to help people quit, but as you said that is one of the last things they really want to do in most areas. They could easily raise the tax in a lot of places and it would cut down smoking a lot, but they won't do that right now because they really want the money that they are getting (the places that depend on the money more have lower tax rates then the places that really want people to quit smoking. they could easily all be like New York, but they would get to many people to quit and lose far more money then they are willing). Because the Tax is based on a total lie makes me hate it and hate the government.now you're talking, lets make it illegal.I think it's idiotic. This anti-smoking stuff is getting out of hand. We've had those graphics in Canada for yeeeears. But people who like to smoke will still get their cigarettes.
The estimated cost per pack of medical bills is not $20..... The money the government makes from the cigarette taxes doesn't go to health care(atleast so far it has not gone to health care)... Most peoples medical bills are not paid for by tax payers... Any thing else?Charge them 20 bucks a pack. I don't care if people smoke so long as they're willing to pay for their own medical bills. (Hence the increase in cigarette prices.)

To report or not to? Because I'm most likely more educated then you I'll let it slide, but The most effective way would be to teach them all about cigarettes in health class. The pictures are mostly fear mongering and most young people will ignore them... The Pictures are just a stupid insult to people that already buy packs. I know this stuff could happen, but do I think the government has the right to put this on something that I'm paying for? No...You reethaded addicts... These graphic are to prevent new comers form smoking them and possibly getting addicted... These new graphic are most likely not even going to affect your addiction. The government is just trying to stop the people who still haven't tried smoking. I personally think this is a great idea because when kids (or who ever) pick up these packs for the first time and see these pictures they are for surely not going to want to start.

The pictures look like a shock tactic. Like when abortion opponents make their argument by showing pictures of dead fetuses.
And that's the point. As a kid, what was more likely to deter me from doing drugs? Actual information about what drugs can do to me, or shocking movies or pictures or stories that sounded absolutely sensational? The shocking sensational crap seemed like propaganda which was devoid of information, and that almost INCREASED my desire to do drugs since I don't like being hit over the head with empty shock tactics. It's like when a crazy Christian fanatic tells you that you're going to hell for listening to devil music. That'd make me want to literally worship Jesus in front of her, just to piss her off.
Shock tactics involve talking down to the audience, assuming that they are total ****ing idiots. For anyone who RECOGNIZES that they are being talked down to and basically being called idiots, that's sort of personally offense and can potentially cause a reaction that's the exact OPPOSITE of what was intended. It's like when someone yells at you for saying that a band is merely "okay", and then that makes you try to distance yourself from them as much as possible. Now you go from saying that the band is "okay" to saying that the band is "total ****ing garbage, and anyone who likes them is a ****ing moron."
Bottom line...getting people to not do something by calling them stupid idiots usually isn't an effective tactic for the people who realize that they are being insulted.
I really do wish they would expand upon this idea and put warning labels on a lot of different things, it would be interesting to see all the cool things that stuff does to the body. Really, I just wish they would ban smoking from public property because I don't like walking down the street and walking past a group of smokers and I can use second hand smoke as an excuse to make other people stop doing something I don't like. Z0MBIES
And I wish they'd ban perfumes from being worn in public places. That crap triggers headaches for me.
Smoking should be illegal in the first place because I am probably going to get lung cancer from all the second-hand smoke I run into from you **** who puff those cancer sticks.
SilentSoprano
You're more likely to get cancer from the millions of tons of carcinogenic fumes we dump into our air each day than you are from coming across the occaisional second hand cigarette smoke.

It's not like we could easily just stop all of that like we could with cigarette smoke if we made smoking illegal. Sure, people would still do it, but at least they would most likely do it in their own home or something. Plus cigs smell like **** and I don't "occasionally" come across it. It's quite common.
Bologna. Kids can see much worse on the internet daily and these images on a pack of cigs will not effect them much. If they want to smoke they are going to smoke regardless of some graphic imagesYou reethaded addicts... These graphic are to prevent new comers form smoking them and possibly getting addicted... Cig smoke smells great but of course since you don't smoke you woulden't feel that way. Perhaps you should stop trying to force your view on others by wanting to make something you disagree with illegal. Please Log In to post.
