From the Article:

Some chefs spend their lifetimes unsuccessfully slogging away to improve business.

But all it took for Reedy Creek Diner chef Greg Simons in Lexington, North Carolina, was to put up a controversial language sign and he's seen his sales triple.

Mr Simons put up the 'No speak English. No service' sign in March and says he's received great support - with some people asking for souvenir copies to take home.

'All these calls I've gotten from outside the country and the U.S. have all been positive, saying things like "Good for you, don't take it down",' he told My Fox 8.

Mr Simons took down the sign in March after receiving a deluge of complaints at the time from people concerned it may have been racist.

It was put up after a group were offended because staff could not speak Spanish.

But Mr Simons said: 'Everybody's money is green as far as I'm concerned. It's a communication thing. Nobody here speaks another language other than English.'

Pretty cool. It just might encourage certain immigrants who choose to dwell on the language and other attributes of the country from whence they came to learn the language.

If the menu is in multiple languages, then that's an invitation to order in one of the given languages, but if it isn't, then take the hint.

I went to Greece. I don't speak greek. Found out that I got screwed on the nutmeg and saffron that I bought there due to language barrier. Buyer beware.

I remember going to a hotel and the maid always spoke Spanish. Obviously I tried to speak English, but she didn't even know what a pillow was so it was hard telling her what to do. I think everybody should at least speak basic English (few thousand words). It can be learned relatively quickly because they live in an English-speaking country.

Exactly. This restaurant owner is aiding people who do not speak the language. They don't want to get ripped off, do they?

Fair game to him. Only issue I see is that the signs wording is a tad rude.

EDIT: Yet, at the same time, Americans go to other countries expecting service when they don't know the language. What a double standard.

If one comes to a country and can't speak the official language, then they shouldn't complain. They have to adapt to the country, not the other way around. It is why multiculturalism fails so miserably. Sure, people shouldn't lose what culture they bring, but they should have to integrate into the one they enter as well, and not become a closed community.

This isn't being exclusionary, racist, or selective. If the staff can't speak anything other than English, then there shouldn't be an expectation for them to get the order right if it's made in another language. I'd like to see more places do this... if you're going to live in the US, learn English. If you're going to travel to the US, at least carry a phrasebook with you or learn some of the basics of the language. The same expectation would be on you anywhere else.

But there's the rub, the US doesn't have an official language (as those states with French heritage can demonstrate in spades), even if everyone does speak English.

While I agree that people should try to learn at least the basics of the main language of their adopted country, it's a little unfair to refuse them service solely on that basis (Let them learn the value of "Pot luck"!).

They can refuse service for whatever reason they want... its their business. If they want to refuse everyone who isn't wearing a 20-gallon cowboy hat, then they can do it. And I didn't know about the lack of an official language. Either way, the majority of Americans speak English, so people who come to live in the country, should learn the languages(s) so they can interact with the people there.

I can understand why some people might think that is racist. But also, I can understand it from his point of view, this is his business and he is free to run it how he wants.

But knowing North Carolina and that area (I am an inhabitant) this is mostly just a ploy by the owner to make some extra money off the local rednecks and racists. I had to go to the local high school once to watch a friend perform in his high school band and seeing some of the people there...

This is actually one of the major problems with Canada at the moment. The resolution is actually in the closed community itself, as many kids have to venture outside of the community to attend public school. I remember being in public school, and the second generation kids were forced to assimilate because there was no other way to make friends. Most of the third and fourth generation kids, whose parents or grandparents originally immigrated, are now as "Canadian" as many of my other white friends.

Who is "we"? Americans? Yes we do, it's called English. We just don't have it posted by the government with a memo because we expect everybody to have enough common sense to already know English is.

It's the government that makes the language official. There is no official, required-to-know-it-by-law language in the United States.

that is pretty damn awesome.

I am tired of this oversensitivity; it is time time establish English as the official language of the US, and to do our best to make sure those moving here speak it.

Other countries do it (for example, my friend is becoming a citizen of Finland, and is forced to take Finnish classes for lanugage and culture), why cant we do it too?
