I Find that very offensive, Almost half the population in the US speaks spanish why are they doing this now?

Almost half? Also, you're originally from South America; Argentina if I recall correctly. Of course you'd take offense. This isn't just geared at Spanish speakers, however.

Lexington, North Carolina, stopped reading right there, talk about a non-story, are there even non-English speakers in NC? X360PS3AMD05
Obviously you have never visited North Carolina. NC has one of the highest Hispanic populations in the country.

I still don't understand why English isn't the official language. Over 80% of the population speaks it as their main language and almost everything is in English. Maybe I will understand when we get a president who speaks Spanish. But that hasn't happened ever.

Presidents have been able to speak Spanish.

One of them even spoke English as a second language.

Food for thought.

Indeed, it's where I am currently living, and half if not most of the people I come in contact with on a daily basis do not have English as their first language.

It is annoying how people move here and expect us to speak their language. They need to make English the official language of the U.S. although it technically is because that is what is taught in schools. Back in the day when the U.S. was getting all of these immigrants from Europe and elsewhere they knew that they had to adapt to the U.S. and that meant learning the language and going by it's customs. Some of the immigrants now seem to expect the U.S. to adapt to them, and never bother learning English because they expect the U.S. to write everything in Spanish and it seems to be working to some extent. They need to adapt to the U.S. and not the other way around.

But did any of them speak it as a main language? When foreign diplomats come to the US, do they speak English or Spanish (if they know both, obviously)? What is the main language used in schools?

people have to understand that the world doesnt revolve around them. if you take a vactation somewhere. you need to know if youll be in an environment that speaks you language.

Ive been to 30 countries. and Ive never had trouble. when they dont speak english? point to a damn picture. its not hard. it also helps to educate yourself even a little bit. when i was it switzerland. that little bit of broken french i knew saved me. i would have a had a damn time ordering food without it (a french gf doesnt hurt either)

Really? Tons of languages are taught in elementary school? because in my public school, and EVERY public school, you are taught English. I didn't have the option to learn a second language until 8th grade. I don't care that we can take a language clas-s as an elective in high school, you are taught English from kindergarten to the end of your schooling career. I never said we had an official language, I said that English needs to be the official language. Melting pot is such a lame excuse for people not molding into society. For a country to be successful you need a cultural norm. It is great that people from different backgrounds are here, but the moment they put their culture over other people's culture, there is always tension and violence. Immigrants needs to mold into the U.S. culture and not expect the U.S. to change everything for them. Culture identity is very important for a country to succeed, and the moment you lost that culture identity, there will always be trouble.

but did you not learn English first? Every school is required to teach English, they are not required to teach any other language. That basically makes it the official language of the U.S., even if the government doesn't want to recognize it.

its subliminal because its basically saying "we only want to serve english speakers." unless the sign was genuine. no english no service because there is no one available to translate. so you couldnt techniquely receive service becus they do not understand your langauge that is not english.

We don't have an official language.

English should be it. IMO

Since there are so many of them I support the idea of Spanish (and maybe Chinese) being official secondary languages, but they still have to learn English.

I remember going to a hotel and the maid always spoke Spanish. Obviously I tried to speak English, but she didn't even know what a pillow was so it was hard telling her what to do. I think everybody should at least speak basic English (few thousand words). It can be learned relatively quickly because they live in an English-speaking country.Mr_Cumberdale

You're a PC gamer, right? I know a great why to put this; You know how Starcraft is the official sport of South Korea is Starcraft but the government has yet to state it? Our country is like that with English.

English is the only language that is required by the government to be taught in schools. Everything the government does is in English and 99% of signs and businesses are labeled and do all of their work in English. I don't care if the government doesn't want to flat out claim it is the official language, it is pretty much implied that it is.

Sure, but I just find it funny that a sign turning people away who can't speak English has such blatant grammatical errors in it. If read literally, it also is declaring that English isn't spoken at the restaurant and that the restaurant has no service.

The sign is somewhat problematic in that who becomes the arbiter that gauges the proficiency of a certain language? What if the person speaks basic English? Or broken English? Or with an accent? Would that be adequate to receive service?

Stores reserve the right to refuse service to people, good for them. I don't have a problem with legal immigrants, but if someone is moving to the US, they better be able to atleast communicate in English. If they aren't that proficient, I don't care, but they need to be able to get their point across.

Ah ah, this is a good one. I must put a sign on my cafe write "Pas de Francais - Pas de Service". Then all the English customer who makes strange face when we don't speak English with him, even when he is not his country, will have opportunity to learn some languages and improve himself.

I hate when people play the race card right away in situations like these. I don't see exactly how the sign can be taken as racism as it is not aimed at any race in particular. The sign might exemplify a slight prejudice(if you even want to call it that...) towards people of all types with an inability to speak English, but nothing racial.

Or is it?

IMO, they should have worded it differently. I'm Mexican and can speak English (I think), so I'd be happy to eat there. People should be allowed to eat there if they have someone who is able to translate for them though.

Some people are trying to point out that English isn't officially the language. But what a lot of people may not know is that when you are applying for Naturalization you're required to show basic knowledge of the English language as one of the prerequisites (knowledge of US history and a halfway decent criminal background are some other requirements).

Anyway, I can see how it could be seen as racist to some people since the vast majority of the people who would be affected by the rule are most likely going to be of Hispanic origin. But at the same time, he's probably putting it there out of frustration of the population of undocumented immigrants. I live in NC and it's estimated that there are alot of people here who are undocumented.

 I like the bottom of the full sign, "We only speak and understand American"

While I don't think its racist, it does come off as a tad arrogant/rude. The customer is the one that really should make the concession to try and adapt to the local language,

I had a similar experience in France where I was refused because I don't speak French. It obviously bothered me but I mean I'm the one who can't speak THEIR languange so I guess its kind of justified.

Still money is money, if it were my business I would accept any customers who are not disorderly and can pay.

I don't see why the Spanish-speaking customers can't just point to things on the menu... Also, I think everyone should be multilingual just in general.

It's his privately owned business, he should be able to do whatever he feels helps his business best as long as it doesn't violate the law.

Not being able to communicate on a basic level is just plain awful. I was in a Subway the other day and a Hispanic male was in line behind me. He tried to order 20 chicken subs with different toppings. One of the girls who worked there started crying because she couldn't understand him and the other English speaking patrons behind him started yelling.

What's even worse is when you CAN speak English and some Americans can't understand you :P

Well English is the de-facto language of the United States.
