Not supporting same sex marriage does NOT make someone a bigot.

I often see many (not all) liberals make the claim that if you don't support same-sex marriage you're a homophobic bigot, and this is completely untrue. I believe marriage is between a man and a woman, and by no means do I hate gay people. I work with several gay people, I give one a ride home from work, my girl friend has several gay friends that she invites over sometime that I hang out with, even one of my good friends told me he was gay later and I'm still friends with him.

Would a homophobic do all this? Not supporting gay marriage does NOT mean you hate gays, neither does simply disagreeing with being gay I don't hate them at all. So where are some liberals getting this from? I have seen some of them use similar BS when it comes to illegal immigration and they say everyone that is against it is racist.

I do support gay rights. I support civil unions and want them to have all the benefits of marriage. I support their right to live in peace and prosperity and to live a life free from harassment or discrimination (I hate it when people say they want to beat up gays, that's not ok at all).

I just don't support same sex marriage. And all the gay people that know me are aware of my view on this and by no means do they think I'm an ****

Yep, give this a few years and it will be blown over. We'll always have the jerks that still dont approve, but they'll be just like the KKK of their generation.

So you support gay rights, but you dont believe that 2 men or 2 women should be married? Where is the logic in that, my friend? Im not trying to be a jerk, but I just dont see the logic in your statement. Youre friends with them, you support their stuggle for equal rights, and you want them to be happy, but they cant be married? It just doesnt make sense bud.

Lol not even the same. Gays are NOT the new blacks, black people were forced to sit in different places, were barred from working the same jobs, were forced to live in ghettos etc....

Yes it does. You advocate using force to stop innocent people from entering into voluntary agreements with other consenting adults, and you do so based on their sexuality. It is irrational, bigoted behavior.

Simply someone who believes that marriage is between a man and a woman.

But what is your reasoning behind this belief?

Several.

I believe marriage is an important instution in our soceity and one of the building blocks of good families. Now I am NOT saying that gays are bad parents or anything, I know a gay couple that raise their kids fine and love them, but marriage is still an important social institution that I feel needs to stay in place.

It's against my religious values. God made a man and a woman for a reason, but by no means do I believe in forcing my religious views on others. Seperation of Church and State (though most people that throw out that term don't know what it actually is referring to or where it comes from).

I don't agree with the gay lifestyle.

Oh I'm not exactly "opposed" to same sex marriage per se, it doesn't really bother me too much if they do get married. I just don't believe in it and support civil unions instead, though I wouldn't say that they'll get married anytime soon. A lot of people are against same sex marriage, and most of them are not bigots.

You are contradicting yourself. First you say that marriage is a building block of a good family... which implies based on your previous comments that marriage between a MAN AND A WOMAN is a building block of a good family. Then you say you are not saying gays are bad parents... I am sorry, but that is exactly what you are saying. Also religion is false.

ShadowMoses900

Those are terrible reasons.

1) If by your own admittance, gays can raise families just fine, then gay marriage has no adverse effects on building a good family.

2) Marriage was a concept that existed long before Christianity or even Judaism and was not the territory of any religious institution. I don't see why a religion should claim authority over it when it was not their authority in the first place.

3) I dont agree with the KKK, but i wont be stopping their right to assemble, communicate, or bar their rights as a citizen.

I often see many (not all) liberals make the claim that if you don't support same-sex marriage you're a homophobic bigot, and this is completely untrue. I believe marriage is between a man and a woman, and by no means do I hate gay people.I work with several gay people, I give one a ride home from work, my girl friend has several gay friends that she invites over sometime that I hang out with, even one of my good friends told me he was gay later and I'm still friends with him.

ShadowMoses900

This reminds me of people from like 30-50 years ago, just replace the word gay with black and see how that sentence works.

Lol not even the same. Gays are NOT the new blacks, black people were forced to sit in different places, were barred from working the same jobs, were forced to live in ghettos etc....

Gays have all the rights as everyone else.

Gay people go through everything you just said. Except in the 60's Black people could marry the person they loved.

I find it funny how ShaddowMoses thinks all atheists are teenagers going through a phase and that gay's shouldn't have the same rights as him. Yet he still claims everyone but him is close minded and that he is tolerant of everyone and in no way a bigot.

There is no logical reason to oppose same sex marriage so if you oppose it the only expanation is bigotry.

[QUOTE="ShadowMoses900"]

[QUOTE="megagene"] But what is your reasoning behind this belief? TheFlush

1. children are not a necessity of marriage. you can get married without getting children or you can have children without getting married.
2. Religious views don't matter in these secular matters.

1. I know you can get married without children, but marriage is still an important social structure and it's defined as a man and a woman.

2. Whether you like it or not, many of our values do come from religious beliefs. Even in several so called "secular" matters.

Yes it does. The fact that you need to make a thread trying to prove to everyone that you're not a bigot just reeks of rationalization.

[QUOTE="00-Riddick-00"]Can I legally marry my dog? No? Bunch of bigots..ShadowMoses900

Can the dog consent to the marriage?

Or can it even legally sign any type of contract?

He has a point. People are calling me a bigot even though I don't hate gay people at all. I just don't believe in gay marriage.

"If you are against illegal immigration you're a racist", "If you don't support gun bans you're a redneck fascist" "If you believe in God you don't believe in science".....there are so many of these demanizing statements that are simply not true.

How does he have a point? 2 grown men or women can consent to enter into a marriage. A dog can't. If you could prove that the dog consents to marriage, then he might have a point, but not until then.

As for the other things you said, they have absolutely nothing to do with same sex marriage, so I don't know why you brought them up.

As for your reasons for opposing SSM, they were, quire frankly, terrible. They were all about you ("my regligious beliefs, I feel that marriage..") Luckily for the rest of us, laws aren't made with just you in mind.

If marriage is so important then surely not allowing gay people to marry is causing harm if not what harm would allowing them to marry cause?

Many religions support same sex marriage, freedom of religion can't exist with out same sex marriage being allowed.

Aljosa23

No I made this thread to try to enlighten people so they know that just because a person doesn't support gay marriage that doesn't mean they are a hateful or bigoted person.

There are several liberal democrats that oppose it as well, are they bigots too? Do you think Obama was a bigot before he changed his position? (which let's be honest, was probably done for votes).

Yeah lol. He's also said numerous times that OT is a terrible community so why is he still posting? He's either a terrible troll or the stupidest person on here.

it makes you moderately bigoted. Sorry bud, I am sure youre a good guy, but the fact is you hold homosexuals to a lower degree than heterosexuals. Freedom and equality are not conditional; either everyone has the same rights, or we are violating the whole concept of equality.
