So I've seen this phrase tossed around quite a bit in movie threads. So I ask you, what IS the best movie ever? I'm just curious on what people may come up with, and what others may think of the choices.

Up front warning, please be respectful of others opinions.

For me, to this day The Untouchables still stand in my top 5 of all time. Everyone in that cast did a fantastic job. Another one would be Fellowship of the Ring. Fantasic translation from book to screen.

What are your picks? Once again, do not come in here and post "Insert movie name" sucks. I'm trying to get discussion going in a positive way.

I'm pretty sure I could watch The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly over and over and over again if I had the time. I love everything about that movie.

I'm a movie buff so this always a hard question for me to answer. At this current moment i'd say:

Personal favorite: Pulp Fiction

My personal pic for the best film ever created: Citizen Kane or perhaps Apocalypse Now.

I'm not sure what the best is, but my favorite - and I rank it among the best - is A Clockwork Orange.

The Godfather the perfect balance between entertainment aspects and thematic aspects. runners-up would be Schindler's List and Amadeus.

There are so many great movies but I would have to put Fellowship of the Ring at the top along with The Shawshank Redemption.

For me, I'd have to vote for The Shining. I think the cast is great, the story is great and it has cinematography beyond most anything any other movie could aspire to. The steadycam work alone is groundbreaking.

Its a shame that I've never finished the book. I read about half way through before I had to return it back to the library about 6-7 years ago. :(

As much as any opinion thread is in OT. The point of the thread was to get users to post just the positives in movies, not focus on one movie and bash it to hell. As far as a community, threads like this get people to interact and discuss rather than argue

I will cheat a bit and go with The Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Closely followed by The Shawshank Redemption.

Honorable mentions : The Matrix, The Bourne Trilogy, Amélie Poulain, The Dark Knight.

I know my picks aren't original or anything (except maybe Amélie Poulain), but good movies are good movies.

Why? You don't have to go into detail, just a brief synopsis.

Oh gosh there are so many technical reasons in terms of the hyper-realism being imposed in a period film, the amazing way in which it is shot, and all sorts of blah blah blah stuff like that which only serves to remind that I should probably revisit it once again and write a nicely detailed review or some such thing. But all that aside it's a film that really moves me immensely in a deeply emotional way thanks in no small part to the amazing acting and a highly charged "script". Despite my atheist beliefs, it also moves me on what I would term a spiritual level and I feel both exhalted and emotionally drained after every viewing.

For a while my favorite movie has been the one in my sig, Fires on the Plain. LZ71

Such a good film but it took me a while to revisit it as it left me somewhat disturbed the first time I watched it. Upon watching it again I was amazed at how beautiful the shots in the film were composed despite the simply horrific subject matter involved. The sequence with the ever diminishing shoes changeout was just so perfectly done as well. Amazing film.

The Godfather Part II. Perfect acting from Al Pacino. Also another film I always enjoy watching is Scarface. Mmm might want to rewatch it again one of these days.

Yeah I remember back when I was a highly dismissive teen and my friends and I would have theme days when we rented movies. On one of those classic film nights we had Casablanca in the mix and I went it all eyes rolling thinking quite sarcastically "oh yeah...this is going to be good". Needless to say I came away mighty impressed by all the humor, quick-witted dialogue, and the pitch perfect character development. Ever since then only The Maltese Falcon has a slightly higher place in my mind as far as favorite Bogart films.
