Im all for being bilingual but that would benefit the illegal immigrants that dont want to speak english. My grandma immigrated here from asia and she was forced to learn english, now obama wants to help illegal immigrants by wanting everyone to speak spanish, this seems to be unfair, just because they are growing rapidly (due to the illegals) doesnt mean there language is more spoken.

Im with my grandfather on this one, This is America, we speak english in this part of the country, you want spanish, go back to South America.

Yeah man, I agree, and I think we should make English our official language, people don't seem to grasp the concept that that doesn't mean we look down on those who don't speak it, we just force them to learn it.

Basically, if it became our official language, the only change would be there wouldn't be Spanish schools, and government institutions probably wouldn't issue licenses and such to those who can't speak English, which if you ask me makes sense.

in canada it's basically the scond language of the nation, with amerca it's new imigrants bringing it in so they should learn english, a country shouldn't have to change itself to cater for imigrants

Yeah man, I already didn't have a choice, I had to speak it in the 6th grade, for a class. I had no choices, couldn't take another foreign language, just Spanish. Frankly, I regret it as I can speak German much better.

Also people who know Spanish get a lot of breaks for college.

I speak a little Spanish. but just because of school forcing us to do a 2nd language, though atleast it isn't so I can speak to illegals. I agree with you TC, that's messed up.

But they do do it so we can speak to illegals, and legals too, but people who don't speak English. If they want us to go on and do something in a field that requires multiple languages the right language would be Chinese, as they are booming.

Saying it isn't for illegals is pretty much false.

The rest of the classes are still in english. Pretty much all business and government are still conducted in English. If they're teaching you spanish, it's not so those crazy mexicans don't have to learn English. Seriously.

The TC is an idiot. Mexicans make up the largest nationality of LEGAL immigrants that come into this country through the proper channels. And Latinos as a whole make up the second largest group of legal immigrants, behind Asians. Its not just because of illegal immigrants. Clear-up your ignorance:ProudLarry

There are more useful languages though, which leads me at least to believe that this is more then just doing "A good thing" for the kids. Why are we not learning Chinese, Japanese or many other languages that would have many more buisness oportunities, which is their reason after all, or at least thats what they told me in the 7th grade. Spanish is great, if you want to work in a restaurant, otherwise its pretty much worthless.

Learning Japanese or Chinese is only useful if you're working in the economy/business sector. The large portion of Spanish speaking immigrants and the location of Mexico makes Spanish a very useful language to know.

Spanish is the second most widely spoken language only behind Chinese. You mention Japanese as being useful, even though only Japan is the only country that uses it as an official/de facto language. Yet Spanish is the official language in more than 20 countries. Please elaborate on how that makes it worthless.

It's written in your constitution that any who are born in the US are citizens. There's no "except illegal kids" clause.

The point still stands. Spanish is still probably more useful over there in the US. You know, being stuck to the top of South America and stuff.

Because, around here their reasoning is "Well if the uh kids want to go into business they uh, need to know more languages." Okay, well that makes sense in a way. I mean after all most jobs are in business dealing with companies across the globe, now if the future economies are not in spanish speaking companies, why is the language worth learning?

Im just basing it off of what our local school district is doing it for, not nationally.

[QUOTE="CradleXX"][QUOTE="Mr_sprinkles"][QUOTE="CradleXX"]When my family came here, they applied for a citizenship, had a criminal background check, and then LEARNED ENGLISH.Mr_sprinkles
Do you think if kids had done two years of whatever first langauge it is you speak, you suddenly wouldn't bother?

Actually I was born in America, English is my first language. My point is that America is a predominately English-speaking nation. If you want to live in a country that speaks a different language then you, I think you should at least try to learn.

I would imagine a lot of the immigrants do, and I would also imagine that for those that do want to learn english 2 years of spanish for the high school kids isn't gonna stop them.

Absolutely, but learning another language takes commitment. 2 years of spanish will not make someone fluent (I've taken 2 years of Spanish). But Spanish is a useful language anyway

[QUOTE="ferrari2001"]

why not just learn english, people in China are learning English in schools, Almost everyone, people in europe have English as a second language, most the time, Everyone in America and most in Canada know English. Within 10 years English will be the most highly spoken language because everyone is learning it.

Ah, so you want every other country to learn your language as a second language, but you complain about learning a second language yourself?

What's wrong with learning English. It may not be the most widely spoken language in the world but is probably the most useful language in the world. For all I care,it should be the official language of the world.

OK.I thought you were just saying that Spanish the second most spoken language in the world. It is not worthless. But if you want to learn a language, then you should be able to choose which one.Harshvardhan666
nobody is suggesting that it has to be spanish. Just "a foreign language"
