why not just learn english, people in China are learning English in schools, Almost everyone, people in europe have English as a second language, most the time, Everyone in America and most in Canada know English. Within 10 years English will be the most highly spoken language because everyone is learning it.

Harshvardhan666

Ah, so you want every other country to learn your language as a second language, but you complain about learning a second language yourself?

What's wrong with learning English. It may not be the most widely spoken language in the world but is probably the most useful language in the world. For all I care,it should be the official language of the world.

What's wrong with learning Spanish though?

Meh I agree some what.. In all honesty I would have no problem if they did it at a very young age.. You learn languages so much easier.. So who knows you could be fluent by middle school.. So that in it self by high school you can choose another language.. I see that as no problem what so ever and I wish they had something like that for here.. Either way I will take Obama any day of McCain whos economy guy says the United States are full of a bunch of whiners and they will have to deal with the economy.. Clearly this guy hasn't struggled.

Again, not even that crazy obama man was suggesting spanish or nothing. He was just suggesting a foreign language for high school graduation.

If people are complaining that they had to do spanish and had no choice, it's probably due to the availability of italian/mandarin/clingon teachers rather than spanish being required by law. Over here in the UK it's "a foreign language" in the curriculum, but a lot of schools only have french because thats what most language teachers know in this country.

I think it's klingon :D.Its true that the school may only offer languages that they have teachers for.And many schools in the southern part of U.S.A may have plenty of spanish teachers. I guess the TC should change the topic title to not cause further confusion.

I think he has more of a problem with the idea of people coming here and 9trying) to force him to adopt their ways, when theyre the new guys. It shows a severe lack of respect for the people who are already here and already helped make this country what it is. If they want to be American then they shouldnt act like they have a chip on their shoulder towards everyone else.

Disagree I think Obama notices that our country compared to the european nations is behind in education when it comes to people be bi or multi lingual.. In Europe its very common.. Here I am lucky to even find a person who knows a second language.. This is a problem that needs to be fixed.. As I said earlier I think it would be a good idea to teach them in elementry school..

And please stop with this damn nationalism crap.. Its unproductive to this entire debate.

Spanish is probably the most spoken language in the world maybe other than English, so even if we didn't have an immigration problem, it wouldn't be a bad thing to learn. But immigrants should have to learn English.

If I wanted to move to France, I would have to learn French.

because.. I hate to tell you this... but its damn near worthless, if I go to Mexico, I don't expect them to speak English but I could still probably get along just fine, hell I know I would, ive done it all ready. Further more if you go to mexico, the real mexico or the fake (Like Cancun) you can probably find someone who speaks English, in fact I guarntee you can.

I don't need them to learn English I don't really want to travel the world, I don't plan on traveling across the world to talk to people about buisness, I plan on being a computer technician, which in America, only requires English. Now explain to me why it would be worth learning Spanish when I could easily take more computer classes and get preped in something I will actually need.

Anchor babies shouldn't count as "legal".

It's written in your constitution that any who are born in the US are citizens. There's no "except illegal kids" clause.

Actually, Mr Sprinkles, the clause was written in our original immigration act of 1790, which stood up until 1965.

I'll give you that, The numbers are a lot easier in chemistry.

It's stange how much harder physics is than maths for a lot of people. As soon as x and y become distance and time the question all of a sudden becomes a lot harder? :?

I'm bilingual (I speak Spanish) and I have family members who are tri and quadrilingual. I want my children to be able to speak as many languages as possible. Spanish is one of the most common languages in the world, so people should want to learn it. And it would be the most useful for most American's to learn since there are many Spanish speaking people in the U.S. No one is being forced to learn Spanish

Yes we just see that every day  thousands of pregnant women running a immense distance on foot to get across the border and give birth.

"A study by the Federation for American Immigration Reform estimated that in 2004 the annual uncompensated cost of medical care for illegal immigrants in California was $1.4 billion. Total uncompensated educational, health care and incarceration costs were estimated to be 10.5 billion.

Care is frequently provided to illegal immigrants by emergency rooms and is provided when a crisis exists rather than as preventive practice. Both phenomena add to the high cost of health care.

For 12 states, the government pays hospitals for providing emergency services to illegal aliens. In 2005, the state of California got $70 million to help with dismal shortfalls. California's San Diego County was about $100 million in the red and Los Angeles County about $140 million.

Many California hospitals cannot afford to absorb costs and many are forced to close due to financial mandates for treating illegal immigrants. As recently reported, 84 California hospitals are closing their doors forever. Hospital closure degrades health care to all in the community and results in job losses."
link

So now, everybody who earns their living and pays their way is suffering because of uninsured, illegal immigrants.

Here in Canada at my school we have three options. Our first is we can go along with french until grade 12 or switch it for Japanese, Spanish or if were really dumb (Learning assistance)

In my opinion the government should not be forcing us to learn another language. I don't even see why Canada is considered 50% french when only 25% of the people who live here are.

More or less Obama is lame, vote for mccain!

Well immigrants make up the country. If, in the future, more than half of the people here speak Spanish as a first language why shouldn't Spanish be made co-official along with English? Many nations are Bilingual. Canada is bilingual and I don't see mass chaos over there.

While I think English should be the official language of the country, everyone should have to learn at least 1 other language in school. And not just take it for 2 years like most schools do now, I mean learn it from 1st grade to High School. Learn it, not just pass the class.

lol thats ruff dude. Im Canadian n all, we have like no problems speakin french as a second language...Why is it that the us complains so much..

Its not like you HAVE TO learn it...

BatmanBegins24

in canada it's basically the scond language of the nation, with amerca it's new imigrants bringing it in so they should learn english, a country shouldn't have to change itself to cater for imigrants

]

If, in the future, more than half of the people here speak Spanish as a first language

I see no reason this should happen. We need better border security to keep out illegals and I doubt enough legal Spanish speaking immigrants will be coming here in the near future that it would represent more than half of the country.

They force you to learn it if you go to school in Miami.

Soon they'll probably make you learn Creole down there too.

Well immigrants make up the country. If, in the future, more than half of the people here speak Spanish as a first language why shouldn't Spanish be made co-official along with English? Many nations are Bilingual. Canada is bilingual and I don't see mass chaos over there.

because we shouldn't have to cater to them. why should WE make spanish one of the official languages when THEY are the ones coming over here to OUR country?

Unless you are of Native American (American Indian) descent, then it's not your country.

I know MANY hispanics that speak Spanish as a second language and they keep the language alive in their progeny. Because of that you have generations of Spanish speaking people, especially in certain places in the U.S. When the Areas spread more people will learn. I even know hispanics who merry people of other ethnicities and still keep the language alive. Hispanic is the largest ethnic minority in the United States. There are more people of hispanic descent than German descent, Irish descent, British descent, ect.

But right now it isn't spoken as a first language by enough people that it would be an official language. It shouldn't be spoken as a first language here at all because we speak English here.

Since when were Native Americans the founders of the United States?

People need to stop with this BS that every other country in the world is forced to learn English, or that most people in other countries learn a second language. There are MANY people from other countries who don't speak a lick of English or even a second language for that matter.

And IMO, if you want to come live in the US, then you should be forced to learn our language...not the other way around. I mean if I went to live in Mexico, I wouldn't expect them to learn English. It would be on me to learn Spanish.

I just don't think learning a second language should be mandatory. It should be an option for those who wish to pursue it.
