in canada it's basically the scond language of the nation, with amerca it's new imigrants bringing it in so they should learn english, a country shouldn't have to change itself to cater for imigrants
]If, in the future, more than half of the people here speak Spanish as a first language
I see no reason this should happen. We need better border security to keep out illegals and I doubt enough legal Spanish speaking immigrants will be coming here in the near future that it would represent more than half of the country.
I know MANY hispanics that speak Spanish as a second language and they keep the language alive in their progeny. Because of that you have generations of Spanish speaking people, especially in certain places in the U.S. When the Areas spread more people will learn. I even know hispanics who merry people of other ethnicities and still keep the language alive. Hispanic is the largest ethnic minority in the United States. There are more people of hispanic descent than German descent, Irish descent, British descent, ect.
But right now it isn't spoken as a first language by enough people that it would be an official language. It shouldn't be spoken as a first language here at all because we speak English here.
Let me correct myself, I meant if half of the people here speak the language, it does not matter if it's your first language or not. And I said co-official. Like for instance, most of the people in Spain speak Castilian (a.k.a. Spanish), but Catalan, Aranese, Basque, and Galician are officially recognized there. That's what I mean.

Why does this only apply to America? Lets kick everyone out of Europe and keep only those with direct links to pagan cavemen from lord knows how many years ago. You know, the Christians totally stole all their land!
South America? Push them all into the water. You can basically apply this to any country on the earth. It doesn't matter if they were here first second third or fourth, they lost the land. As much as you might hate that that is what human history is. One group takes from another. They no longer have clam to this land let alone this country.

That's a little more fair but lets keep in mind that some complaints against illegal immigration are fair as well.
Personally I think everyone in the nation should be able to communicate with eachother through multiple languages. We need to pick up with the education in this country ASAP.

Did I say it wasn't your country? As a person who came here LEGALLY to the United States - I strongly oppose illegal immigration. I strongly oppose having to learn Spanish when I LEARNED english (granted we have always been a bilingual speaking family and english was my first language - heck I'm not hispanic, why would I want to learn that language? I want to learn what I want to learn). I'm sick of pressing 1 for English, 2 for Spanish. Next thing you know, someone will be saying "hey our language is the 3rd language spoken here in the U.S. - I want to press 3 for that!"SajedeneObama was just saying "Our kids should be bilingual" and spanish was just an example. He was just asking for a foreign language to be required, not spanish in particular. Out of context quotes suck.

I agree you baisicly said the same thing as me.
It's actually beyond me why anyone would complain about this. It's such an insane way to look at it 'we are catering to them'. It's good to learn a second language, I think everyone would agree with that. Why not make that second language that of a neighbouring country? In England, we learn mainly French, Spanish and German. Because these are major countries in our continent. You are not replacing English with Spanish (even if you did I can't see the problem, it's just a language) your just learning a second language, you are becoming smarter. So learn the most useful language.swizz-the-gamer
I'm already fluent in two languages and am conversationally able with 2 more. Why would I want to learn a language that encourages the illegal immigrants or legal immigrants to not learn the DOMINANT language of the country they are coming into?
You forgot to add "hardworking" immigrants who went into uninhabited, wild territory to earn a living, "make their way" so to speak. Without"safety nets" and immigration lawyers and hospitals and schools. MY ancestors never relied on anybody else to put food on their table, or hospitals that are forced to accept them regardless of their legal status.I'm just making a roundabout point that it seems a bit unfair to complain about immigrants when the large majority are descended from immigrants themselves.
Oriental_Jams
There's a pretty big difference between an immigrant who starts a homestead and an immigrant who expects everything to be free.
Meh I agree some what.. In all honesty I would have no problem if they did it at a very young age.. You learn languages so much easier.. So who knows you could be fluent by middle school.. So that in it self by high school you can choose another language.. I see that as no problem what so ever and I wish they had something like that for here.. Either way I will take Obama any day of McCain whos economy guy says the United States are full of a bunch of whiners and they will have to deal with the economy.. Clearly this guy hasn't struggled.sSubZerOoI agree. Elementary school is mostly a waste, anyway. If there's a time to learn a language, it's then. I wouldn't like to learn a language, because immigrants coming into my country refuse to speak English, but I would like to learn a second language for the sake of knowing it( well, Ideally. My Spanish grades say otherwise :P)

Why would you not want to learn a beautiful language that a neighbouring country speaks?this is what happens when a politician speaks the truth. He gets crap for it.
This is America; English may be the language of the majority, but we need to learn Spanish because this is America. We are a great example of a multicultural society. We are not compromising, nor are we surrendring our linguistic right to foreign invaders...we are merely being practical. Non-english speaking people (specifically Hispanics) will be coming here for a long time.

Being bi-lingual does not make one smarter. It just makes them much more sociable and culturally exposed. And again, Spanish is not the only language out there. So if i'm taking this right, we're hated because we have our own opinions on how our country should be run, and those opinions differ with other countries of the world, and because of their self-righteous nature they hate us rather than respect us.
Ok, makes sense.
No not quite. It's because you are so privileged yet so full of hate and anger. You are given an opportunity to have almost all American children learn a second language. So in like a generation you have everyone speaking two languages. You get angry?!!?!A Second language is not required to be a productive citizen of the US, and for some people learning a second language is hard enough. So instead we leave learning a second language up to the individual, because the need to know it, and which one they need to know can differ greatly depending on what a person chooses to do with their life. For instance Chinese/Japanese would help in a financial path, whereas Various middle-eastern languages are going to gain you some points with the US military atm. And some colleges require a second language all on their own so that pushes people to seek it out willingly.
Pushing a second language and pushing SPANISH in particular is nonsense. I dont see the need to understand spanish and have no plans to visit a latin nation and i see no other benefit from learning spanish, so any political push is for purposes pertaining to illegal immigration.
