Obama's election as America's first black president unleashed a renewed love for the United States after years of dwindling goodwill, and many said Wednesday that U.S. voters had blazed a trail that minorities elsewhere could follow.

People across Africa stayed up all night or woke before dawn to watch U.S. history being made, while the president of Kenya — where Obama's father was born — declared a public holiday.

In Indonesia, where Obama lived as child, hundreds of students at his former elementary school erupted in cheers when he was declared winner and poured into the courtyard where they hugged each other, danced in the rain and chanted "Obama! Obama!"

"Your victory has demonstrated that no person anywhere in the world should not dare to dream of wanting to change the world for a better place," South Africa's first black president, Nelson Mandela, said in a letter of congratulations to Obama.

Many expressed amazement and satisfaction that the United States could overcome centuries of racial strife and elect an African-American as president.

"This is the fall of the Berlin Wall times ten," Rama Yade, France's black junior minister for human rights, told French radio. "America is rebecoming a New World.

"On this morning, we all want to be American so we can take a bite of this dream unfolding before our eyes," she said.

In Britain, The Sun newspaper borrowed from Neil Armstrong's 1969 moon landing in describing Obama's election as "one giant leap for mankind."

Yet celebrations were often tempered by sobering concerns that Obama faces global challenges as momentous as the hopes his campaign inspired — wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the nuclear ambitions of Iran, the elusive hunt for peace in the Middle East and a global economy in turmoil.

I believe that we are gonna see some very, very good results from President Obama, even here in Canada.

He shows great promise. He will lead America in a new direction, away from the need of war, and violence, but to a bright and wonderfule future that all Americans can be satisfied with.

I look forward to seeing great results from this wonderful man.

Here's to you, President Obama! God bless you.

God bless United States of America, and everybody else.

I know no one who was against going after AQ as well as Taliban which play as a base of power for them. The only thing that has been argued for military action is that of Iraq.

Obama is in the big boy's seat now. Our economy is really starting to look very scary at the road we're heading down. Hopefully, Obama doesn't result to more government control, which is what got us in this problem in the first place.

Speaking to some of my friends from Europe they basically just wanted to see if the US would elect a black president. That's really what all they hype is around the world. Not to rain on the party or anything.

It's also because it's a change. Voting for McCain would really have been just staying on the exact same path. You know?

They didn't really care about that. Many people just think that the US people are ignorant dumb racists. This is the sign they were looking for to show them otherwise.

i dont care for the pics, but that sig is full of win, kudos to that.

i don't know if this is more about the fact that the world likes Obama's policies, but more so that it reignites the worlds belief that the American Dream still exists and i we're still the Land of the Free and Home of the Brave.

Too bad his foreign policies aren't that different from McCains. And don't expect to see troops home from Iraq anytime soon. Only Ron Paul would've have stuck to his guns on that topic.

I am optimistic but very cautiously. I can't think of anyone in history who has as much riding on his shoulders right now as Barack Obama. Much will be expected of him, but he will not be able to deliver it all, and some of it he may not even try too hard (such as bipartisanship/reaching across the aisle). But while the future is uncertain and there are lots of challenges ahead, last night was a terrific moment and it inspired a lot of people.

WoW. He must be the antichrist people like him.

I'll let you know for sure when he demands we all ID ourslves with tattood numbers. IF that happens we'll know for sure.

Anyways, in all seriousness. I voted for Obama, not without skepticism. I think we should always remain skeptical of our leaders and their Agenda. Anybody who want's a posistion of power should be questioned over and over again untill they leave office.

If he does anything fishy I'll be the first person to call him on it.

I hope Obama uses his popularity to mend our relationship abroad and help our economy by easing our fears. On a bad note, when do you think we'll start seeing Rev.Wright visiting him at the white house? that's one of the negatives I see with Obama--siding with a well known racist.

He's popular world-wide; that's surely a good sign? As a Brit, I'm happy he won. Though I don't know why I should be; I have absolutely no idea about the policies of both candidates. Either way, it feels like a breath of fresh air now that he's in power; from my view at least. :)

I'm not all that surprised the world is so excited. I was in England this summer when he won the Democratic nomintaion and everyone over there was so excited and so hopeful we would elect him President.

I can't say I blame them, either. I'm extremely excited and can't evne put into words how I feel right now.

I feel like I've got my hopes and dreams for my country back.

And if Obama as US president starts seeing himself as part of the world and not ruler of the world, then he'll go a long way into repairing damaged relations.

You also got to remember, all the things he says may not happen. Congress has to approve first as to not let one man have total power. For example, he wants to give tax cuts to 95% of Americans. I doubt Congress would approve a number that high. He would have to make revisions. He says for the remaining 5% who make over 250k, he isn't going to raise taxes. I think that's a load of crap. The government would lose tons of money. I mean, I don't like either one of them, but if I was forced to choose one, it would of been Obama. McCain is very grouchy and too old. SNL didn't help things with Palin and you were hearing some sort of conspiracy about Palin every week. Their rallies were hate rallies. Basically, what turned a lot of people off was that McCain voted with Bush 90% of the time and Obama played up to it all the time. "The failed economic policies of George W. Bush..." and so on. McCain tried to use fear and Americans don't like that when were doing bad. McCain started off with a huge disadvantage because Bush's ratings are so low like 25%. I thought the race though was going to be very close though I thought Obama was going to win by a tiny bit and McCain would have demanded a recount. I'm surprised Obama got the HUGE amount of votes in this elextion. The only real negatives was that he used to be friends with Jeremiah Wright and he's a racist. If you don't believe in what the pastor says, then why do you keep going? That was a big factor as to why people wanted to vote for McCain and he knew Bill Ayers who was a terrorist. Those were the two big negative things about Obama but he stated he's not a racist and he happen to knew Ayers from an education thing. Another reason as to why Republicans lost was that NOBODY wanted to see Palin as president if something happened to McCain and people thought she wasn't experinced enough. Basically, race still played a pretty big factor in this election but not as much as Bush.

People also thought Obama would handle the economy better and we are doing extremly bad in terms of that such as Wall Street but people thought McCain would do better at handling Iraq. People were like "oh, Obama's muslim or whatever and he's a terrorist since he had connections to Bill Ayers." Hopefully, Obama can use popularity to get other country's support and think that America isn't racist after all.

As great as those images are, they don't mean anything to me. What someone else thinks in another country about the stability of our leader means very little.

I know that the 'unification' of the world lovers see it different, but it's true. I think if anything, most people are just glad to see Bush gone. It's hard to not like Obama somewhat because he has no true foreign policy experience. What's to hate? When there's nothing there, you can't dislike it.

He wants to pull out of Iraq and go into Afgahnistan or I'm pretty sure Pakistan to find Bin Laden. I think in my opinion, it's going to take more than just one/his term to get us back to where before. I think it's going to at least take a good 10 years to make up for this. Of course, Obama won because he got like 80% of black votes or something. I think this is a wake up call for America.

I think in my opinion, it's going to take more than just one/his term to get us back to where before. I think it's going to at least take a good 10 years to make up for this. Of course, Obama won because he got like 80% of black votes or something. I think this is a wake up call for America.JDWolfie
Aw wtf! I thought he was just gonna end the whole war. Damn. I just hope the troops don't go around killing/torturing folks.
