Those cheers will last about 5 minutes. Hatred for this country goes far deeper than just who the President is.greeneye59
Obama promised alot of good things, people voted on that and if he does not keep them then thats not the peoples fault.

I just hope the troops don't go around killing/torturing folks.
We can't just pull out of the whole war. He's aiming to end the war, quickly, but he's not just going to pull out. He can't. Now that we're there, pulling out in one swift move would just do so much more damage than it already has.

It's not because he's black, dear. It's because American citizens put aside differences and elected the right man for the job as opposed to sticking with the Republican war mongers who obviously have not done a very good job these last 8 years. It's because it shows a huge shift in America as we know it.
To be honest, the color of his skin has very little to do with why the rest of the world is rejoicing.
I think many foreigners (not using that word insultingly) misunderstood a lot Obama's ideals....He plans to withdraw from Iraq in 16 months and use those troops to reinforce Afghanistan.
Which, quite frankly, I don't believe is possible given the current situation in Iraq (bases, forward command posts,equipment,contractors,etc)...A more realistic time table would be all US Forces leave by 2 to 2 1/2 years.
I don't want to sound offensive, but now that America has the first African-American president, and myself being a Republican who voted for McCain, there's really no excuse anymore for many African-Americans as well as other monorities, no whinning, b*tching and moaning about Reparations, Freebies and Free-handouts, and so-called "white man is keeping me down" non-sense.
Obama's victory = ANYBODY can be President (as long as you were born on US soil), regardless of race, religion, or gender. As long as you work hard, be an upstanding citizen in America, you can accomplish anything.

Obama is in the big boy's seat now. Our economy is really starting to look very scary at the road we're heading down. Hopefully, Obama doesn't result to more government control, which is what got us in this problem in the first place.LikeHateradeI have to disagree with you there. What got us here was letting the banks do their own thing. "but the democrats did the houses for poor people thing, it's their fault!"
Right up until the crash, banks were making profit out of those dodgy loans. If you think banks need to be told twice to make profit or that without those few regulations (which didn't apply to all lenders by the way) they just wouldn't have bothered making money that way, then you don't really have a very good understanding of the way capitalism works.

His image is definitely a symbol of that, but there are still too many minorities being held down by prejudice and discrimination. That's not to say that they're completely innocent, but aren't given quite the same window, and Barack Obama being president doesn't mean that'll disappear overnight.

I don't think so either. Someone with the hexidecimal code #000000 will not be president, because someone with that skin color probably doesn't exist.
Obama is the coolest guy I know. :P_LiquidFlame_
..And anyone that idolizes a politician whether their black, white, yellow, pink, democrat or republican is clearly lost.
I was told something that i have noticed to be true lately. People don't want a president, they don't want someone who just accepts or vetoes bills that congress makes..they want a leader, a king, a hero. They want a leader to love and follow. They don't want some old guy sitting at a desk signing bills, they want a man of action, someone to lead the front lines. At the beginning of the USA people didn't want Washington to be President, they wanted him to be king. I just look at the way Obama supporters are treating him and they don't treat him like a guy who is going to be signing bills into action, they treat him like a king...atleast this is what i have noticed..it's not true for everyone. hoola
If every one of these people gathered together into one room or area and just talked for a day or two, the world's largest and greatest work of fantasy fiction would emerge.
He wants to pull out of Iraq and go into Afgahnistan or I'm pretty sure Pakistan to find Bin Laden. I think in my opinion, it's going to take more than just one/his term to get us back to where before. I think it's going to at least take a good 10 years to make up for this. Go into Afgahnistan? We're already in there. We've been fighting a war there longer than Iraq.

I think Obama wants to send more troops into Afghanistan and maybe invade Pakistan and Iran and continue to give aid to Isreal..I don't believe there will be too much difference between an Obama presidency and a Bush presidency when it comes to foriegn policy.

It won't happen anytime soon, but I think America will eventually get over the misconception that all Muslims = terrorists.

discourse and uncertainty is what fans that flame. Sometime's it works out for the better, sometimes for the worse. That remains to be seen.

The difference is that Obama isn't going anywhere to force democracy down anyone's throat, or get some kind of natural resource. If he sends troops anywhere, it's to root out terrorists. Of course this is just what he say and if he goes back on that then I'll be the first to call him out.
I think Obama being elected is very symbolic in a few ways.
The most obvious is that people have finally gotten over skin color differences in politics enough to elect a black leader.
But then there is the HUGE upset that Mccain experience which is pretty us Americans giving the middle finger to the administration we have had in power for these past 8 years.
Then it is also interesting to see the old man booted out of office in favor of a younger man with bright ideas. Seems to mean us younger generations may finally be trying to make a difference.
And the one I find most relieving is how Obama has basically proven that dirty campaigning will no longer work. He faced a dirty campaign by Clinton AND Mccain and came out on top despite all the horrible BS spewed about him.

I couldn't have said it better. BUT this will never happen because the majority of the minorities will never let go of their race card! it is their crutch for failing. Some will embrace the American dream and nothing will get in there way, they will blame no one person or race but themselves if they fail. Others will never try and say they have no future because they are (insert race). Yet others will try and fail and it will be because they are (insert race). Thats just how the cookie crumbles and how the world is that we live in. Accept it of fight it, it will not change.

He is not black, nor is he a African American. His mother is white and his father is black. You just cant blatantly say he is black or the first black president....because that is entirley incorrect. I cant call Obama white because his mother is white, you cant call him black just because his father is black.

Well then, McCain should've jumped all over that. If he would've caught Obama lying about his own race, think about how damaging that would've been.
Anyway, I always thought that I was black too. Guess I was wrong. I guess now whenever someone asks me about my race, I'll have to state the exact percentages.
Those of you saying people in Europe just wanted Obama to win to "see if the americans would elect a black president", you're way off. To me, that just demonstrates that a large number of people over there still look at people and see their skin colour first, rather than the person beneath (even now that you have a black person). He's another president, another person. And don't forget that the European Union is democratic and its ideals are closer to those of the democrats than the republicans. And everyone around the world was just way too tired of the bush administration, Obama, as a person, not as the first black president, represents hope and liberty.
And yes, it is important that the rest of the world agrees to the choice of president. The USA moves the world, too the good and to the bad. And, being a country that tends to go overseas for whatever reason it is and start wars that end up touching every single major country, yes, it matters to all of us. And don't forget that the USA are made of people from around the globe, europeans did start the country after all. So yes, yes we care!
Here in Portugal there was a reunion at Lisbon's Hard Rock Cafe, with 400 people, only 15 voted McCain.
I just hope everyone has the serenety to give president Obama the proper time, afterall, he is in hands with one of the hardest times for humanity.
Let's all hope the man is up to the challenge and congrats to all americans! yes you could and yes you did, well done!
i dont care for the pics, but that sig is full of win, kudos to that.
i don't know if this is more about the fact that the world likes Obama's policies, but more so that it reignites the worlds belief that the American Dream still exists and i we're still the Land of the Free and Home of the Brave.
Too bad his foreign policies aren't that different from McCains. And don't expect to see troops home from Iraq anytime soon. Only Ron Paul would've have stuck to his guns on that topic.
