A Senate bill would offer President Obama emergency control of the Internet and may give him a "kill switch" to shut down online traffic by seizing private networks -- a move cybersecurity experts worry will choke off industry and civil liberties.

Details of a revamped version of the Cybersecurity Act of 2009 emerged late Thursday, months after an initial version authored by Sen. Jay Rockefeller, D-W.V., was blasted in Silicon Valley as dangerousgovernment intrusion.

"In the original bill they empowered the president to essentially turn off the Internet in the case of a 'cyber-emergency,' which they didn't define," said Larry Clinton, president of the Internet Security Alliance, which represents the telecommunications industry.

"We think it's a very bad idea ... to put in legislation," he told FOXNews.com.

Clinton said the new version of the bill that surfaced this week is improved from its first draft, but troubling language that was removed was replaced by vague language that could still offer the same powers to the president in case of an emergency.

Thats right, your elected president wants to take the internet, a freedom if you will, away from you. This could happen when ever he considers something a cyber attack. What is with the Government control of the Obama administration? I enjoy all my freedoms and i feel like everyday Obama and his admin take one away. 2012 cant come sooner...

It's the cyber equivalent of marshal law. If there's an emergency, the Internet can be shut down. Just as if there's an emergency, the army can come in and tell you when you can leave your house.

Remember when Bush was president, and the left was in a tizzy about how he'd become a dictator and we'd enter a police state? Remember when that didn't happen?

The bill was introduced in April of last year with bipartisan support and was debated before Obama even took office. The 'Obama is the devil' reports are becoming tiresome.

1. There's no established "freedom" to use the Internet. 2. A freedom can be suspended in an emergency. Again: Marshal law.

Oh hi, you must be a liberal? Or maybe just a radical Obama follower? Please tell me which. No one ever told me Fox was 100% lying. You know, like all the time. thats news to me.

More libertarian than anything. I don't particularly like President Obama, but he's not the anti-christ that some make him out to be. Also, I like to watch Fox news for entertainment value (the other stations are so boring, and that's why they lose so bad in the ratings) but I wouldn'tever trust its reporting.

I don't know whether it's the writer of that article or the writer of the bill, but someone along the line there appears to have no idea what "the Internet" is, and I find that much more irksome than this bill, which unsurprisingly comes from Lieberman, the resident Senatorial troll.

To be honest that one is more accurate than the Fox News one in that it includes this pivotal sentence: 'To be very clear, the Rockefeller-Snowe bill will not empower a "government shutdown or takeover of the Internet" and any suggestion otherwise is misleading and false. '

Where was i to complain you say? Where was i to defend my self as an American Citizen enjoying the laws the founding fathers handed us so that we may enjoy a life without control by the government. Marshall Law wouldn't come into effect unless we got into a war on our grounds. I would gladly let people offering their lifes for me to use my home. I'm proud to have such people fight for me.

Er you realise that Marshall law isn't just about letting people use your home yes? And it is by no means just about war on American soil. It can be implemented during any time of national emergency.

Fail. Obama still wants control of the internet, this is just as far as he can get with our laws standing today.

Also says this :"The new version would allow the president to "declare a cybersecurity emergency" relating to "non-governmental" computer networks and do what's necessary to respond to the threat. Other sections of the proposal include a federal certification program for "cybersecurity professionals," and a requirement that certain computer systems and networks in the private sector be managed by people who have been awarded that license. Probably the most controversial language begins in Section 201, which permits the president to "direct the national response to the cyber threat" if necessary for "the national defense and security." The White House is supposed to engage in "periodic mapping" of private networks deemed to be critical, and those companies "shall share" requested information with the federal government. ("Cyber" is defined as anything having to do with the Internet, telecommunications, computers, or computer networks.)" And that line was from Jena Longo. Of course she won't say anything negative about the bill.

Thread title: 'Obama wants control of the internet' Facts thread is based upon: Bill introduced by two senators; one democrat, one republican, debated before Obama even took office. Conclusion: Irony.

Fail. Obama still wants control of the internet, this is just as far as he can get with our laws standing today.

So you're just ignoring the fact that it was debated before he even took office and co-drafted by republicans? That's cool...

Well, that's Obama for you..we have only ourselves to blame..

Xx_Hopeless_xX

It's not just Obama. I can pretty well damn guarantee McCain would be doing the same thing if he was elected. Stuff like this is just enacted by our government in general. Nothing to do with what side they're on.

How's this: http://news.cnet.com/8301-13578_3-10320096-38.html

To be honest that one is more accurate than the Fox News one in that it includes this pivotal sentence: 'To be very clear, the Rockefeller-Snowe bill will not empower a "government shutdown or takeover of the Internet" and any suggestion otherwise is misleading and false. '

And how does that in any way refute the fact that the bill in no way grants the President the ability to 'turn off' the internet as both Fox News and the TC say it does?

I like how you mention republicans like you automatically refer to me as a republican for not liking Obama  The Obama administration is the only one pushing for this bill. No one else, as far i know.

He cant simply turn it off at will, but whatever it is he considers a cyber attack, which since its under his opinion, could in fact be anything.
