[QUOTE="Kokuro_Kun"] theirs just so many of you that are misinformed. Ninja-HippoThread title: 'Obama wants control of the internet' Facts thread is based upon: Bill introduced by two senators; one democrat, one republican, debated before Obama even took office. Conclusion: Irony. that is all that needs to be said
hmmm. cool. let's hope it passes because the majority of you people actually see no problem with it. it's really cool that the US was founded as a constitutional republic. they warned against democracy. ben franklin said democracy was like two wolves and a sheep deciding what's for dinner. and here we are. democracy.lloveLamp
Um, I'm pretty sure we're still a constitutional republic, considering that we have a constitution and are a republic.

There are strong elements of representative democracy present within the framework of the constitution though. (most of which was put there by the founding fathers...)

Well, yes, we are a constitutional republic whose representatives in government are ultimately elected by the people, although I will grant that there is much more direct election today than there was when the Constitution in its original form was enacted.
There are blah blah blah with the blah blah blah who would like to blah blah blah about the blah blah blah. Blah blah blah is definitely very blah blah blah and must blah blah blah in accordance with blah blah blah blah blah.

Exactly.
The bill was introduced in April of last year with bipartisan support and was debated before Obama even took office. The 'Obama is the devil' reports are becoming tiresome. Ninja-Hippo/thread. Seriously. I'm sick of all the ignorant Obama hate threads. If you've got a valid issue, go for it. But this is just false hate-mongering

Maybe you missed the fact that this bill was introduced by a democratic and republican senator BEFORE Obama ever took office. Obama haters are really grasping for straws now.... Sheesh...
[QUOTE="Kokuro_Kun"]I realise but this should still be adressed. Its on the news right now in Chicago. TheokhothIt's the cyber equivalent of marshal law. If there's an emergency, the Internet can be shut down. Just as if there's an emergency, the army can come in and tell you when you can leave your house. /thread Oh, and lolfoxnews.
Giving such a power to a president? I really don't like this idea.
But is it Obama's idea?
Wasn't this bill introduced last year or something by Liebermann? I have a vague memory of it.
SgtKevali
Yep. I too certainly despise the bill, but I don't see how Obama was responsible for it.
[QUOTE="xaos"]Forget the internet; I believe that I was promised death panels :xGabuEx
I just want people to stop referring to "the Internet" as though it were one central server with an off switch. :(
Fear and lack of understanding of technology are pretty characteristic of Lieberman[QUOTE="GabuEx"][QUOTE="xaos"]Forget the internet; I believe that I was promised death panels :xxaos

Fear and lack of understanding of technology are pretty characteristic of LiebermanI can just imagine Lieberman after he finds out that the internet also exists elsewhere in the world.
"hey vladimir putin we're shutting off the internet"
"o rly"
"ya plz shut ur stuff down"
"no"

I thought that Lieberman was behind this absurd and unworkable billxaos
I got a feeling that liberman could be a sith lord. Maybe palpatine is the reincarnation of lieberman! Or maybe it the other way around!

Who do you think they based Palpatine on? :P
2. A freedom can be suspended in an emergency. Again: Marshal law.Theokhoth
What part of the Constitution is that?
It's the cyber equivalent of marshal law. If there's an emergency, the Internet can be shut down. Just as if there's an emergency, the army can come in and tell you when you can leave your house.Theokhoth
Posse comitatus mean anything to you?
Good God this thread is horribly paranoid. Obama has nothing to do with promoting or passing this bill. It was proposed before he left office and is now being promoted by Lieberman.Danm_999
So much Obama bashing on these boards that I'm starting to sympathize with him. Parallel this to two years ago when I couldn't stand everyone endlessly praising him.
I'm amazed at how it's even possible for there to be such a thing as a kill switch for the internet. That sounds so ... odd.
[QUOTE="Kokuro_Kun"]
A Senate bill would offer President Obama emergency control of the Internet and may give him a "kill switch" to shut down online traffic by seizing private networks -- a move cybersecurity experts worry will choke off industry and civil liberties.
Details of a revamped version of the Cybersecurity Act of 2009 emerged late Thursday, months after an initial version authored by Sen. Jay Rockefeller, D-W.V., was blasted in Silicon Valley as dangerousgovernment intrusion.
"In the original bill they empowered the president to essentially turn off the Internet in the case of a 'cyber-emergency,' which they didn't define," said Larry Clinton, president of the Internet Security Alliance, which represents the telecommunications industry.
"We think it's a very bad idea ... to put in legislation," he told FOXNews.com.
Clinton said the new version of the bill that surfaced this week is improved from its first draft, but troubling language that was removed was replaced by vague language that could still offer the same powers to the president in case of an emergency.

Thats right, your elected president wants to take the internet, a freedom if you will, away from you. This could happen when ever he considers something a cyber attack. What is with the Government control of the Obama administration? I enjoy all my freedoms and i feel like everyday Obama and his admin take one away. 2012 cant come sooner...
