Thread title: 'Obama wants control of the internet' Facts thread is based upon: Bill introduced by two senators; one democrat, one republican, debated before Obama even took office. Conclusion: Irony.

It would never work. There are so many hackers and networks that the government couldn't regulate the internet, and that's just in the U.S.. Do you think private industries abroad would allow such a thing to happen?

[QUOTE="Ninja-Hippo"][QUOTE="Snipes_2"] Right here: "The new version would allow the president to "declare a cybersecurity emergency" relating to "non-governmental" computer networks and do what's necessary to respond to the threat. Probably the most controversial language begins in Section 201, which permits the president to "direct the national response to the cyber threat" if necessary for "the national defense and security."

Nowhere there does it say the president has a 'kill switch' to turn off the internet as Fox claimed. What it DOES say is this: 'To be very clear, the Rockefeller-Snowe bill will not empower a "government shutdown or takeover of the Internet" and any suggestion otherwise is misleading and false. ' So that's that cleared up.

It says "do what's necessary to respond to the threat. Probably the most controversial language begins in Section 201, which permits the president to "direct the national response to the cyber threat" if necessary for "the national defense and security." I think that includes having a "Kill Switch". That quote was taken by someone supporting the Bill...

Um, I'm pretty sure we're still a constitutional republic, considering that we have a constitution and are a republic.

There are strong elements of representative democracy present within the framework of the constitution though. (most of which was put there by the founding fathers...)

Well, yes, we are a constitutional republic whose representatives in government are ultimately elected by the people, although I will grant that there is much more direct election today than there was when the Constitution in its original form was enacted.

What don't they want to control? They want to control everything. The U.S government seems to believe everythingis within their jurisdiction. They just want to be able to cut the feed to stop the flow of information to keep the general public unaware.

Giving such a power to a president? I really don't like this idea.

But is it Obama's idea?

Wasn't this bill introduced last year or something by Liebermann? I have a vague memory of it.

So much Obama bashing on these boards that I'm starting to sympathize with him. Parallel this to two years ago when I couldn't stand everyone endlessly praising him.

[QUOTE="Kokuro_Kun"]

A Senate bill would offer President Obama emergency control of the Internet and may give him a "kill switch" to shut down online traffic by seizing private networks -- a move cybersecurity experts worry will choke off industry and civil liberties.

Details of a revamped version of the Cybersecurity Act of 2009 emerged late Thursday, months after an initial version authored by Sen. Jay Rockefeller, D-W.V., was blasted in Silicon Valley as dangerousgovernment intrusion.

"In the original bill they empowered the president to essentially turn off the Internet in the case of a 'cyber-emergency,' which they didn't define," said Larry Clinton, president of the Internet Security Alliance, which represents the telecommunications industry.

"We think it's a very bad idea ... to put in legislation," he told FOXNews.com.

Clinton said the new version of the bill that surfaced this week is improved from its first draft, but troubling language that was removed was replaced by vague language that could still offer the same powers to the president in case of an emergency.

http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2009/08/28/senate-president-emergency-control-internet/

Thats right, your elected president wants to take the internet, a freedom if you will, away from you. This could happen when ever he considers something a cyber attack. What is with the Government control of the Obama administration? I enjoy all my freedoms and i feel like everyday Obama and his admin take one away. 2012 cant come sooner...

Yeah, it's pretty contrary to the entire design purpose of TCP/IP (reroutable, redundant modes of getting data around)
