I really don't mind either but... wouldn't new music eventually be old music anyway? :P Then... what would you call that? Still old music or what?

I'm more of a rap person and the best rap can pretty much be found in the 90s, now it's pretty much garbage. I blame the target audience at that though. Right now it's all poppy dance ****, although there are some good albums put out from time to time.

I love punk and punk was only punk in the 70's and early 80's. Also I'm of the opinion that the best reggae comes from the 60's to 80's so if thats old then geriatric me up.

Overall I prefer older music...like classical, classic jazz, classic rock/oldies, etc. However, I do listen to some newer music like Elliott Smith, Radiohead, Manic Street Preachers, The Offspring, Flogging Molly, Gnarls Barkley, etc. You just have to dig for the gems.

I'm having a hard time thinking of a genre that existed before/during the 80s, and that I would consider in better shape now.

I think there's still a very large amount of good music still out there; unfortunately a lot of it has been obfuscated by record companies attempting to cater to perceived trends and popularity.

I vote new music, because out of my top 10 albums of all time, half of them are new(Explosions in the Sky's "Those Who Tell The Truth..." and "The Earth is not a Cold Dead Place", Radiohead's "Kid A" and "The Bends", and Godspeed You! Black Emperor's "F#A#oo"), and I'd wager more music that's been released since my date of birth is in my top 200(I'm too lazy to check my list, 200 albums is a lot to check on). Maybe you're just not giving newer music a chance. You can't expect new music to sound exactly like your favourite old songs that might also have nostalgia attached. If you do, then it's a failed endeavor and that's your fault for not giving it enough of a chance tan it is "new music" for being "terrible stuff". Maybe you would like BlackMountain?

Just a small town girl Livin' in a lonely world She took the midnight train going anywhere Just a city boy Born and raised in South Detroit He took the midnight train going anywhere A singer in a smoken room The smell of wine and cheap perfume For a smile they can share the night It goes on and on and on and on (Chorus) Strangers waiting Up and down the boulevard Their shadows searching in the night Streetlights people Living just to find emotion Hiding, somewhere in the night Working hard to get my fill Everybody wants a thrill Payin' anything to roll the dice Just one more time Some will win, some will lose Some were born to sing the blues Oh, the movie never ends It goes on and on and on and on (Chorus) Strangers waiting Up and down the boulevard Their shadows searching in the night Streetlight people Living just to find emotion Hiding, somewhere in the night Don't stop believin' Hold on to the feelin' Streetlight people woahhh, woahhhh Don't stop believin' Hold on... I picked new just to piss you off. Truth is I don't have a preference. I love music from the 60's just as much as the stuff out now.

Calling all "new music" terrible is a gross and awful generalization. How can you possibly make that claim when bands like animal collective, radiohead, arcade fire, modest mouse (although their most recent album wasn't their best work, but stuff like Lonesome Crowded West is absolutely amazing), and neutral milk hotel are all considered "new"? Sure, a lot of crap exists today, but this was the case back during the time of the "old" music. You are simply just seeing the past with all the outsounding music highlighted by years of exposure.

Old music by a long shot.

Let's see some new bands hold up against Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Megadeth, Metallica and Anthrax.

Simple answer, they can't.

Christ. This thread is going to go spiral out of control soon once the metal heads join in.

I used to be all 'old music ftw!' Nowadays I respect all music, on some level respect all artists who are sincere, write thier won songs, and don't lip sync.

I'll have to go with old music, espically around the 70s. Music is a bit depressing now, not that it's bad, just depressing. Everyone that isn't a pop/rock band takes up a super serious attitude, so obssesed with getting their point across, usually something ridiculous and cliched like, "Oh the music industry is evil." So evil in fact that itproduced your albums for you, something which you couldn't be bothered to do. Other times it's just songs about things that are just plain depressing, like drug addiction. I just don't find it that entertaining to listen to thatwhen the sole purpose of the song is to depress me.

Older music.

New music has some amazing creations but they can't compete with Billie Holiday or Thelonious Monk.

In general, I like newer (as in 90's and later) music, but every decade has had good and bad music so I find generalizing very difficult. I would rather not limit myself to some vague label like new or old.

I personally don't like new music, unless it's a band that is releasing new material, yet they've been around for a while.

Okay, if by 'old' you mean before the 00s, then yeah, I'd say I listen to more 'old' music than 'new'. But if you mean 'old' as before the 90s, then I listen to more 'new' music than 'old'.

I have no preference, though.

I mostly listen to older music (He's referring to 50's, 60's, 70's), but I also love some newer artists that are out there. Good and bad music come from all time periods, and just saying "old is better than new" or vice-versa is foolish.

Why start this argument? You're obviously a Zep fanboy so he'll just name some bands and you'll say they're nothing next to Zep...it's all pointless.
