I see a lot of threads about metal appreciation but have never seen an emo thread. I got introduced to it about 2-3 years ago by my friend and I was skeptical at first but after giving it a chance and making an effort to get into it I found it a really rewarding genre to listen too.

I mean real emo too (not to be confused with the modern post hardcore scene e.g. hawthorne heights)... orchid, pg 99, circle takes the square, the saddest landscape, envy, daitro, sed non satiata, Saetia, or earlier stuff like navio forge, sunny day real estate.

Anybody actually made an effort to get into it? Did you hate it or love it (I think its one of those genres without an inbetween)? Who did you check out / enjoy the most?

I am just basically asking because I feel emo music needs some love on this board and it can't just be me who enjoys it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bE7yK1-QbW4 Here is a song I really enjoy in case you are not familiar with Emo ( you might need the lyrics)

That depends - would you call early 90's bands like Sunny Day Real Estate, Elliot, etc. emo? 'Cause I like that stuff.

My favorite band of all time is headed by who some people call the "godfather of emo", The Smiths. But I don't think many people would classify The Smiths as emo, though you can't deny their influence on the genre.

The smiths "the queen is dead" is a superb album. Pretty much all their albums are solid though. Good band :)

That song listed in the OP was actually pretty good...that is until some maniac starting screaming and ruined the whole thing. If that's the best 'emo' music has to offer, no, I don't like it lol.

Oh sorry I should have warned about that!

if you like the calmer parts maybe post rock is for you, they have some amazing instrumental tracks. All emo isn't like that and it is by no means the best (it is just a personal favorite), some emo doesn't contain screams at all.

It can take some getting used to for you to enjoy some vocals in emo, they are quite raw in some bands I like which is off putting to new listeners.

HTFSO is an amazing album. SDRE is more melodic emo, but they definitely count and there's a lot of people who know about them still(at least, in my area, and among my friends). Could just be a regional thing though.

I'm not sure what bands are considered emo or what emo specific bands are, but the whole emo/scene/hipster culture is the most asinine thing I've heard of this decade.

Emo was around in the 90s (at least when it picked up popularity), this decade of "emo kids" probably dont like emo, but post hardcore.

Emo fashion scene is a bit nutty. The emo music scene is a different beast altogether, yeah. :P

Emo music surfaced in the 80s and hit its peak long before 2005.

They were, in my area, the flagship emo band of the 90s. The one that we could play around people who weren't really exposed to emo, and they usually wouldn't hate it, or would like it. *shrug* Kind of helped branch people into the more melodic emo, and then some more into the more hardcore-side of emo.

Yeah its not so much my kind of music from the genre, I much prefer the more hardcore influenced bands, but thats just my taste of course :) everybody will differ.

I think emo is too widely used. I see so many bands tagged with it on sites, even if they don't sound emo, it's like people are obsessed with the label nowadays. I'm not completely sure what bands are really "emo" music, but I suppose the only emo bands popular in the 90's that I like are The Smiths.

Love it, both old bands like Thursday and Sunny Day Real Estate and new ones like MCR and The Used. It's probably what I listen to most these days. I think a lot of the hatred emo gets is mainly because of the caricature of emo kids created by the media. I'm introverted and I guess you could say I'm depressed, but I don't wear black all the time, don't wear make-up, don't have 'emo hair' don't complain about my problems to other people, don't cut myself, etc.

Its a pretty rewarding genre to get into, but it can take a while to get into some of the heavier emo bands as some of the vocalists are an acquired taste.

the bands run together.

Sigh.. whatever.. Seems like people grow out of "emo" music. Its all fueled on teenage angst. A lot of metal is as well, but its a lot more adaptable and not nearly as ridiculous.
