4 Big name albums dropped in the last few months. All of them Grunge/Alternative from the mid 80's/early 90's scenes, and all of them were comeback albums (in some ways) and all have been very critically acclaimed and given much praise by fans and critics. Which one have you enjoyed or are more interested the most?

Pearl Jam:Backspacer

Alice in Chains: Black gives way to Blue

Sonic Youth: The Eternal

Dinosaur Jr.: Farm

Dinosaur Jr.- Farm. My friend recommended it, and I picked it up on a whim, and I really like it. Gonna have to check out more of their stuff.

It was really great, I thought it would be a sell out album from the single i heard (the fixer) but the album was very well crafted, despite them doing pop. :P

Your hate for metal knows no bounds. Even Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth) likes black metal! :P

I'll go with Black Gives Way To Blue. Not my favorite band though, but definitely the best of the early grunge scene.

Ironically, yes. Surprisingly, no :P

My pick is The Eternal. It's amazing how Sonic Youth can make such an accessible album without sacrificing any of their ideals. They're always evolving but at the same time, I'm always surprised at how cohesive their whole discography is.

I thought they did that already with Sonic Nurse, I thought that The Eternal was geared more towards their underground roots. Fantastic album I must agree and it got my vote.

"new wave" is dead, along with 80's alternative yet The Killers and Interpol try to take a stab at it. ;)

And i never said grunge was coming back.

Not really. New Wave was good, grunge wasn't. And the problem with them being one hit wonders is that Antics and Our Love to Admire were fantastic albums. Pearl Jam is the only band you listed that I can stand. And anything with Chris Cornell in it should be avoided as if it's the plague.

So yes, I'm saying Interpol>>>>them.

Ahh so your just using the typical "opinion" arguement instead of saying anything otherwise. New wave was good because it was literally a part of grunge, which imo, made it better, dont know how you can like one but not the other. Antics was alright, the bonus album was much much better as it had Song seven and B sides that were better than the album songs (their best song by far) but Our love to Admire was bad. Huge let down, nothing but the same. It sounded just like Turn on the Bright Lights and Anitcs, and was just bland and boring.

It seems like your not very well informed on the genre itself. Listen to the music before you judge. There was more to grunge than the Seattle 4.

And Im saying no way Interpol>>>Them. Interpole has only made one worth while album and their others dont even come close to it.

Because your argument isn't at all opinion-based? And new wave emerged in the 1970's, grunge wasn't around until the 80's. :? So I don't know where you're getting the whole "new wave was a part of grunge" thing. And growing up in the 90's, I've listened to the genre quite a bit and found it to be, for the most part, dull. And fine, Interpol has one worth while album. That's still one more than any grunge band.

You are quickly rising to the top of of my "cool" people list, that was just awesome. minus the lead singer. Sounds so much like the lead singer of Muse, it annoys me. :P But the "opera" like vocals are very nice indeed.

mexicangordo

Right. Then why exactly did you bash my argument for being opinion based? So they're both off-shoots of alternative? That still doesn't make new wave "part of grunge." Especially since it was the off-shoot that showed up first. And my dad listened to grunge quite a bit. I heard it so much that when the 2000's came and bands like Linkin Park popped up, they sounded good. :o Hard to believe, I know. And I couldn't care less what critics or fans think. Their opinions have no more meaning than my own.

And I do enjoy Pearl Jam from time-to-time (I own a copy of Vitalogy, actually). But that's it, as far as grunge is concerned.

[QUOTE="mexicangordo"] I really did not like that album. And I like Porcupine Tree a lot.

You whore:o Fair enough though I love it. Its my favorite album of theirs next to deadwing, lightbulb sun, and in absentia. Another album I loved this year is Sing Along Songs for the damned and delirious by Diablo Swing Orchestra. Listen to this.

You are quickly rising to the top of of my "cool" people list, that was just awesome. minus the lead singer. Sounds so much like the lead singer of Muse, it annoys me. :P But the "opera" like vocals are very nice indeed.

Thank you kind sir:D I found about about them recently. If you like them check this out:D

Of course its "opinion" based, but when it comes to music, having an opinion is already stated and known, so whats the point of bringing it up? If that were the case, then why ever argue about anything music related....

New Wave is alternative, just to let you know.... Grunge was part of the underground alternative scene...:o :P

And If you like Interpol, more than any Grunge band, well thats good for you. Im just trying to see why, and Im getting short vague answers, but I suppose you hearing it a lot and it being "dull" was a part of it. And to say Interpol has one worth while album, and grunge does not is a complete joke statement. Makes you seem like your a silly person who doesn't have a clue on what grunge is besides Nirvana and Pearl Jam (and your not either of those) I can easily name for you albums that are more cricially acclaimed by fans and critics but you'll play the opinion card so i guess it will have to be a draw. :P

Dark_Knight6

I didnt "bash" thats way over exaggerated. I said no way,l was trying to get an answer but all i got were those vague bursts. How can New wave help create grunge but not be a part of it. Just as a quick note, New wave IS alternative, its the first known alternative music ever. Grunge started in the early/mid 80's not 90's...

And there's the opinion thing again.. :P You are a stubborn one :P

You know, i was wrong about you. Your not as musically open minded as I first intially thought.

Vitology is an amazing record btw. Tremor Christ, Nothing Man, Cordouroy, Bugs, The Whipping....good times indeed. :P

Ive heard of them before, never seen the music video, that was pretty cool. However, thats not my taste. When it comes to composition and orchrestrated music in the rock formate, i really wan't it to sound different from rock, not trying to imitate it. Quick example would be Pink Floyd, they did that a lot.
