Well, they're a bunch of idiots. What's the purpose of raising a 'genderless' child anyway? Gender roles were constructed for a reason.Shottayouth13-
They were constructed so people can place other people into categories and make a lot more easy assumptions about who we are as people. So yeah, they were created for a reason. It's not necessarily a good reason though. Pink used to be a manly colour, blue used to be a feminine colour. Now they've switched. Why? I don't recall, but probably because some Duchess somewhere dressed her boy in blue and girl in pink, and that trend caught on. Not a very good reason.

[QUOTE="Lockedge"] Well, if I had kids, I'd follow #6, and some watered down combination of a few others. However, I will agree that 2,3,4,5 and 8 are pretty nuts.

Half of them are pretty nuts but the other ones seem pretty sensible. Not restricting your kids sexuality to whatever they want and not forcing religion on them seem like really good ideas.

But "forcing" religion and raising a kid to know about it are different things. Also I suspect that many who oppose teachingthe kid a religion are probably forcing other things on them (like feminism, socialism, or "gender theory") so it's quite hypocritically.

And yes parents should restrict their kids sexually. Why should they allow a 12 or 13 year old to be running around sleeping with everyone in sight?

You cant expect a parent to not influence their kids in any way. Parents dont have a passive role or at least shouldnt when it comes to how their kids grow, what they believe etc. They wont let their kids choose 100% what they consider right or wrong. Obviously, for instance, they'll teach their kids that stealing and killing are wrong. There's nothing wrong with that. Whenever a parent says that they will allow their children to choose freely about a subject among the options for it, I dont expect them to mean about everything. Only the things they deem to be appropriate to be left to the children's judgment.

True. Indeed parents should true to influence their children. Rather than let them be influenced hapharzadly and by all sorts of people.

Also I imagine the reason that the Chinese push the "no religion until 18" is because they don't want Chinese people to believe in anything higher than the government, because Communism hates religion, partially because loyalty to God prevents total loyalty to the state and because religion is an alternative vision that breaks the monopoly of Communism.

I wouldn't be surprised if the idea of "no religion until 18" was devised by socialists or communists.

Not really... They just dont care if it's a girl or a boy... Why should the child have to fall into gender stereotypes? Which is exactly what the parents are trying to prevent, by making no-one aware of his/her/it's gender.

whats wrong with that. It would be nice to see what happens when we aren't put into these "male" and "female" roles.

It's more important to make it an IT so that it feels like an IT. By letting it pick what IT wants to wear and do its hair however and wear makeup or whatever when other, normal kids are behaving in accordance with their sex is just putting the child in a disadvantage not to mention ridicule. Imagine one of those kids growing up looking like it described. Hair half braided, makeup on yet a masculine face, some crazy outfit walking around. It's perfectly normal. It's called L.A.

The only people who know are Storm's brothers, Jazz, 5, and Kio, 2, a close family friend and the two midwives who helped deliver the baby in a birthing pool at their Toronto home on New Year's Day.

YellowOneKanobi

Well that explains alot...(answering "what type of people would ever do this?"), but yeah I don't understand any logic in anything about this case at all.

It's Obvious to the child, and the parents. But they dont want outside people influencing their child due to it's gender.

I would have preferred being raised that way.

The child may have a hard time when SHe sees that the world isn't as free and expressing yourself is bound to the rules of the tribe. If SHe is tough then maybe SHe can be an agent of change.

He's not going to be confused at all. IF it's a she, they're not going to cover her in bows and pretty dresses. IF it's a he, they're not going to force him to play with tonka trucks, army men, or into sports. They're just not forcing the child to conform to gender stereotypes, and preventing neighbors from influencing their child into those stereotypes. I dont think you actually get it.

I don't see the point in this. when the child gets a little older it wil be obvious if its a boy or girl

Being a certain gender doesn't determine what parts you have, that's sex. Gender is between the ears, sex is between the legs.

umm, men and women are naturally different, not only physically but mentally as well. You can't pretend a baby doesn't have a sex. It's either a boy or a girl and that will determine at least at a basic level what kind of person he or she is going to be. These parents are just morons.

They're not pretending that the child is neither a boy or a girl. Obviously they know which. They're not telling anyone so no-one buys thew little girl cute dresses, or the little boy tonka trucks. They want to see what the child likes, and allow the child to enjoy it. By telling other people, they'll act differently around the child, influencing it. And Obviously the kid will know his/her own sex.

Sex isn't gender, they aren't pretending the baby doesn't have a sex. You'd also be inclined to know that homosexuals have been shown to have similar brain structure/chemistry to heterosexuals of the opposite sex.

Gender and sex are two different things, ones in the head the other isn't.

I understood it. I was just making fun of it.

But still, the child's name is Storm; that should be embarrassment enough for it. And the parents are just exploiting it, thinking they can make some social change. But the rational seems genuine enough, that a person's gender is irrelevant to the character they manifest. But most people will not share that viewpoint.

MrGeezer

If the person's gender is so irrelevant, then why try so hard to raise the kid genderless? That almost seems to defeat any point that the parents were trying to make.

There's not forcing your children into extreme gender roles, like boys "playing rough" and wearing blue and girls being "dainty" and wearing pink, and then there is making your child a "gender explorer" and tacitly encouraging him to dress like a girl. It'd be one thing if he made that decision on his own, but for his nutjob liberal parents to press their ideological beliefs on him is just wrong.

That's most likely because most people are unaware of the differences seeing as people spout it off all the time. Sex isn't gender.

The idea of letting a child explore what they like and not letting the child be influenced by gender stereotypes is not a bad idea. However, society does not have that viewpoint. When this kid starts school, all the kids are going to bully him relentlessly. Once this occurs, it's no longer about forcing the child to conform to a bunch of gender-associated stereotypes. It's about protecting the child's well-being and self-esteem so SHe doesn't kill his/herself when SHe is in high school.

To put it bluntly, the kid is in for a crappy life.

[QUOTE="ferrari2001"]umm, men and women are naturally different, not only physically but mentally as well. You can't pretend a baby doesn't have a sex. It's either a boy or a girl and that will determine at least at a basic level what kind of person he or she is going to be. These parents are just morons. whipassmt

Sex isn't gender, they aren't pretending the baby doesn't have a sex. You'd also be inclined to know that homosexuals have been shown to have similar brain structure/chemistry to heterosexuals of the opposite sex.

Gender and sex are two different things, ones in the head the other isn't.

Ugh. I heard this same idea expressed so many times in a previous thread last week. Here we go again.

Don't you just hate facts?
