Is pirating music right or wrong?

I say it's right, but it's hard for my Conscience to stop me when I'm firing up limewire.

it is not right nor wrong. well only by the law it is wrong, but the real question is wether you want to support the band and their label's profit, for they can keep making more music.

Obviously it's wrong, but some people are too poor to pay $10-15 for every album they want to listen to. Same as video games, applications, etc.

That South Park episode on this subject sums up my feelings. Music is an art form, musicians are suppose to do it because they love it not because it makes them millionaires. And it's not like they go through hard times, they still make millions on CD sales, as well as concerts and merchandise.

Also, pirating will never be stopped. A few unlucky ones may be caught, but as long as the internet is around, there will always be loads of people pirating games, music, movies, programs, and all sorts of things. Hell, Bioware tried coming up with a fancy way to stop people from pirating their game Mass Effect, but all it ended up doing was pissing off it's paying customers. People just found a way to crack the game and run it even with the new anti-piracy. It's honestly pointless for authorities to worry about pirating, because so many people do it and it will never end.

They are paid for their work. They are overpaid for their work. No amount of pirating will change that.

It's obviously wrong, but in the end most artists make the majority of their money off of ticket sales anyway so it may actually help some artists get noticed and gain a fanbase.

That's exactly like stealing a table from Walmart and trying to justify it with the same logic. "Well, Walmart has too many tables." No. Theft is wrong, no matter how well-off the victim is.

Of course it's right. I'm so used to downloading, I don't even think about it any more. But I haven't stopped at music. No, I'm downloading books, clothes, furniture, drinking cups, shoes, guitars, etc. You name it, I download it.

Nope. If you pirate music you ARE stealing their work. And the market is what the market is. Don't want them to be paid much...don't listen to their music.

although they may make almost too much money, they still created the work, and in turn, are entitled to the money it makes, via CD, concerts, merchendise, or whatever. The notion that music is created for the people is not entirely true, in fact, I say it's mostly false. A lot of people (At least in classical music), write for a living, and live off their compositions, so even if rock musicians, or whoever, make a lot more, they still deserve to get paid.

Pirating music that you would have bought if you couldn't pirate it just because you don't want to pay for it is wrong. But IMO if you weren't going to buy it at all, then there isn't anything wrong with pirating it because you aren't really stealing anything, or at least, the makers don't lose anything.

iTunes is almost like pirating. They're stealing music from artists and selling them on their website.

It's wrong, but I only buy albums that are very rare on the internet. I just bought Julieta Venegas - MTV Unplugged.

Wrong of course. If someone asks payment for something they created, you have a moral duty to pay it if you want access to whatever it is they're demanding payment for, since they were the ones who spent the time and effort making it available in the first place. People can offer their services and talents for free if they wish... but no person has a right to impose that decision on another person.

You can't tell a person that you don't think you should have to pay them for their work for 'X' reason. You'd be extremely ticked off if someone did that to you. So no matter what rationale you come up with - the music's a rip-off, everybody else is doing it, musicians should be about art, not money, you name it - you're still acting immorally.

I've heard many musicians say they don't care if people steal their music, and some even encourage it (especially many 60's bands like the Grateful Dead who often had free concerts). Everyone who doesn't is a sellout as far as I'm concerned.

This is true. But all this has been pointed out before. I've asked people how they would feel if their boss decided not to pay them since he felt they made enough money. They, of course, answered that they don't make as much money so it's not the same. Strange how one can justify taking advantage of another while maintaining it shouldn't happen to them.

Most musicians aren't paid very well for their work at all. Don't be fooled by the small minority that becomes exceedingly wealthy.
