http://www.rawstory.com/2015/10/playboy-magazine-to-stop-publishing-pictures-of-naked-women/

Starting next year, Playboy will no longer be publishing photos of naked women in their magazine. They claim the prevalence of internet pornography has made their signature nude spreads "passe" and wish to change their target audience to that of young employed males. The website has already been made safe for work and has increase traffic. The US published magazine remains unprofitable, subscriptions have sunk to only 800K, down fro 5.6 million in 1975. Despite the US version of the magazine is in the red, it helps prop up its profitable international prints and profits from licensing deals.

Maybe now people will indeed be reading it for the articles. It will still include pictures of women, just "PG-13" in nature. In the article, they likened themselves to Vice, expect for people with jobs... that's kind of stupid to say, Vice has lots of great content (and a lot of shit too). I'd dare Playboy to be so bold as to send people into war zones like they do.

I had a feeling I'll get such a comeback. What Playboy is trying to do is to transform the brand from a pornography one into an avant-garde, auto-erotic brand focused on sensuality and more refined sexual excitement. But that market is a niche one, and as such, won't really save the brand on the long run.

Playboy articles are supposed to be pretty decent, so it would make sense to try expand on that somewhat (that, and that everyone goes online for their porn these days).

The only reason anyone reads Playboy articles is because they need time to recharge after masturbating. Playboy has just erased it's own reason to exist.

@loafofgame: DC and Marvel comic only, yes. Comic books still hold there place such as DC/Marvel but my last DC purchase was The Killing Joke.

So how exactly does your statement make sense? Hentai is like the exact opposite of real girls...at least playboy has pictures of real girls not weird qausi-pedo cartoons.

Pretty cool move, surprised they haven't done it earlier though. Playboy has always had some great articles like its interviews with Martin Luther King Jr, Jimmy Carter, Steve Jobs, and others.

@davillain It's almost like we are on a public forum or something. If you want private conversation, take it to PM. Otherwise, it's a message board and people may interject on the things you write.

I'm actually surprised this didn't end long ago. With the internets and all. But it was cool to see female celebrities spread while it lasted. Who will be the last person in the last magazine i wonder ?

Agreed, this is a good move on Playboy's part, their articles and interviews are usually very good.

Truth is, people no longer care so much about the airbrushed nudity with the ubiquitous Internet around. It's important to still have provocative women in it, and it will have tough competition with other men's magazines like Maxim, but it's the right move.

Fortunately the fappening afforded me the opportunity to see the naked bodies of a great number of female celebrities in one fell swoop earlier this year. Seems almost stupid to rely on print media when such a huge number of attractive women are so irresponsible with camera's.

I feel blessed to live in a society where nudity is so easily accessible. Both IRL and online.

Did not even know old Heff still had the mag out. Trying to remember who it was at 14, but she was hot, like many of them. Then you discover birds. Mmm, maybe old Heff is trying to repent his sins lol. He did not get laid enough by a munter.

Their articles are basically lower brow versions of The New Yorker but more high brow than something like Maxim and even Esquire. Said it earlier in the thread but the Playboy Interview sections had notable interviews with people such as Jimmy Carter, Malcolm X, Steve Jobs, Martin Luther King, etc. These interviews sometimes went to over 10,000 words. They also published short fiction by famous novelists and the cartoons section was always in nice full colour spreads.

Internet porn has totally desensitized me to anything soft core. I remember as a kid, being able to fap to playboy. I don't evening think I could even get it up for playboy now...

So basically Playboy is going to become a more upscale Maxim?

Yeah, I still subscribe to PC Gamer so I can read it while on the can. I of course realize just about everything in it can be read online for free, but I dunno guess I'm old school love reading physical magazines while taking a crap. It's the most relaxing part of my day heh.

Hmm...Well there's no music or music videos on MTV anymore either.

I can kinda see their point when you can do a Google search to get seductivly nude pictures or more, and with magazines being bought less when you can now get news and such through an Ipad, cell phone and computer. It would eventually force them to make some changes to their product.

Even if it's for many of us near unthinkable to not have Playboy involve nudity.

It's a branding problem. Playboy has and likely always will be associated with just being a mag with naked pictures of women. As well despite how progressive society is the thought of paying for porn when literally an infinite amount is available for free doesn't appeal to anyone under the age of 60. If this relaunch goes well with some solid marketing and messaging they can turn their fortunes around and bring a new generation in. Keep in mind that a general interest magazine aimed towards men of a certain stripe inevitably draws other people outside that demographic, kind of like how Vanity Fair and Vogue have a lot of male readers despite being more female-orientated publications. That's what they'll be aiming for.

Beats me, man. I only found this out once Playboy came up in a journalism class.

funfact: Playboy published a serialized version Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451 early on and both helped each other gain acclaim/readership. Pretty awesome that one of the most famous American novels got its success from the same publication that published porn lol.
