Poll: Do you think joining the military is dumb?

Tried to join the Marines twice and they wouldn't let me in because I used to have Asthma. I would like to see every person in the U.S. join the military in some aspect. Some times I think we get too much for free and we should learn to respect whats given to us.SuperHunter

Fighting our "war" in someone else's country is supposed to be an admirable thing?  I'm supposed to give props to the chain of command because they happen to be the shistiest war mongerers in the history of our country?  I don't think so.  You wont hear me cheering that on.

Also, don't get offended at my majority statements.  If you don't agree or fall into that category, then why not just agree and take pride that you happen to be the minority of the statement?

So you are saying you would rather fight them here in the US then taking it to them, away from our families? We are in THEIR OWN country where they chose to set up shop, So we are simply tearing it down. Yea, its admireable because we arent letting them come HERE to endanger our families and friends. And who the hell said I was a bush supporter? Just because I agree with our fight in afghanistan, DOES NOT mean I support Bush and his groupies. I support the troops, however, with full heart. And as for your majority statement, that is all it is. A statement....an Opinion. I LIVE with these people, by the way, and on ultra rare occasion you do see someone who kinda reminds you of a meathead. BUT that is judging a book by its cover, sir, and that is wrong. Making the assumption that most of the people who serve in the military are stupid  is absolutely the most rediculous statement I think ive heard on this forum yet. xhellcatx

No, the military is what you make of it. I have gained alot of opportunities from the USA military I wouldn't have gotten without them. If a person enlists they better know the fact that you might be sent to distant lands to die for your country...it's not just something to do for college money.

It depends on how you look at it.

First off, as I said before, Afghanistan is supporting the terrorists. If the USA was protecting terrorists and groups that would go and do such harm to others, then yea, I could see someone coming here to take out that organization. Us would deserve that for supporting them....but we arent and we wont cause thats against our policies and our way. We dont harbor that crap though so we have no worries about that.  AND IF YOU DIDNT LISTEN TO ME BEFORE, I WILL SAY THIS AGAIN. I DO NOT AGREE WITH THE WAR IN IRAQ. But we have to at least help them stand on their own two feet before leaving them on their own. That would be just as bad as pointing our rifles at them and killing them ourselves, in my opinion.  But whatever, Im way too crabby for this rediculous debate. Its obvious your going to stay with your hippie closed minded way of thinking (yes...it is close minded, because your not open minded enough to consider all of even what I just said. I bet you arent even going to read it, or try to call up some other sort of bs. So its not worth it.)

Wow didn't know such a thread existed well here's my pretty biased opinion :P

I joined the United States Navy Reserve and proud of it! If you would like to experience life in the military but still go to college and do all that other good stuff this is the way to go :). I joined because I wanted to serve my country and for the hefty 20,000 dollar bonus + money for college + experience + IT LOOKS GOOD ON PAPER lol.

Well i'm a freshmen right now attending college here in beautiful San Diegio, and I can not emphasize how the Navy has changed me as an individual, the feeling of wearing the uniform is spectacular. But the greatest achievement i've done so far was when my father cried in tears of joy at my graduation from basic training and hugged me; he's never done that for me in the past (cried for me). So yea...In hopefully a few years i'll be getting my commisioning as an intelligence officer and join the fleet for once lol.... I WANNA SEE THE SEA MAN :p

Like I said in the topic I made like a weak ago. A lot of people join for stupid reasons (if not most) so yeah, you're partly right.

if i were to join the military id do it for the free school, but id do a job where it is impossible to die, such as doing communications.

Despite the issues this country has, I think its a very good show of character to give something back to the country that they live in. Also I would like to point out that the military does not mean you will be thrown out into the line of fire no matter what believe it or not you actually have a choice in what you will be doing.

Hell I plan on going to the Coast Guard Academy in order to get my Degree in engineering and to become a helicopter pilot for the coast guards search and rescue team. Then to top it off once I graduate I can either continue a career in the military after my 4 years are up as a captain or go elsewhere at my leisure with the benefits of having served in the US military.

So yeah I guess its up to the person but Free school is only one of the benefits and in the end you will be getting so much more.

my GF step dad did communications in the RAF, lived in germany got educated did his time and now works for nortel for around £65k a year, he's currently in bolivia doing some training, this year he's been to sweden, russia, isreal, germany about 4 times and south africa, he is absolutely laughing

The best years of my life have been with the Marine Corps. Next to having my daughter, it's the best decision I've made. There's been nothing "dumb" about it. Unfortunately, it's fun for kids to run other people's careers and decisions down for cheap amusement. There is nothing really funny about those people who put monetary success and personal safety in the back seat for other values such as honor, courage, and commitment. At the least you should show those 17 and 18 year old privates and lance corporals who risk their lives so the rest of the country can sleep safe at night a little more respect than denigrating them because it's something you weren't cut out for.bt_the_great_78
