That's what I hate most about the internet. Americans refuse to call American football American football. And why not? It makes perfect sense!
Football is football, American football is American football and soccer is a dirty, dirty word we won't use any more. Come on America, you know you want to.
[QUOTE="martialbullet"][QUOTE="Pearl_of_Egypt"][QUOTE="martialbullet"][QUOTE="Pearl_of_Egypt"][QUOTE="martialbullet"][QUOTE="Pearl_of_Egypt"]I love football as it is obvious in my sig :DPearl_of_Egypt
So I'm guessing that I shouldn't say anything bad about Egypt's team huh?
you'd better not!
*shakes fist angrily*
I would have said "must........resist"
but your anger scares me.......
fear me! :x
 ahhhhhh!! *runs north*
I live north, so you're running straight to me!
mwahahaha
damn it! You took my favorite direction!
I don't like going south:( it's hot.
Ive tried watching soccer but i found it entirely boring. Same thing with hockey which is along the same lines except on ice and with sticks instead of feet.
The only time you ever get excited is when they get close to the net so you know that if something is going to happen when it will be. The fun factor is too sporadic
People we all know that australian football (AFL / rugby) beats soccer and American football.
And there is a perfectly good reason for calling it soccer in Australia. So it won't get mixed up with aussie rules and AFL. Its already confusing enough having 2 footy shows let alone 3.
[QUOTE="club-sandwich"][QUOTE="Ilived"]Do you mean the Euro Cup or FIFA World Cup?It wasn't on ESPN last time. I had a hard time finding the games.

Euro 2004 was not on ESPN. It actually has never been(well in the US ESPN). I believe this is the first time it will.
Well that's great since I'll be on the US this summer so I guess I won't miss the Euro Cup. :D[QUOTE="club-sandwich"][QUOTE="Ilived"]Do you mean the Euro Cup or FIFA World Cup?It wasn't on ESPN last time. I had a hard time finding the games.

I find it funny how in the USA football isn't appreciated. here in Montreal, we're more European so when Euro or World Cup is on everyone goes nuts with flags on their cars and honking and stuff (me included :P) man when Greece won in 2004, there were cars honking for days
I always thought it was funny that they called it football over here when the only time its allowed to touch a foot is when they are punting or kicking a field goal or extra point. Shouldnt it be .....Handball?Alter_Echo
Get mixed up with another sport called european handball. I think they should call the sports AFL and rugby respectively. Cos its annoying when you think people are talking about AFL when there are actually talking about rugby.
Americans don't call American football American football because it has little exposure anywhere else so it would be redundant.
P.S. - I don't know why international audiences don't give our brand of football a chance, I mean, soccer has a reasonable following here. You guys overseas took a liking to basketball pretty well so give one of our other sports a shot. I don't blame you for not being into baseball though, that's boring.
Basketball and Football FTW!!!

I know! I didn't expect that at all, and I was rooting for Portugal in the finals. but then Greece won and that honking drove me nuts :x
Yeah I feel the same way, I refuse to call american football just football, and calling football "soccer" big no no.That's what I hate most about the internet. Americans refuse to call American football American football. And why not? It makes perfect sense!

If this was in response to my post, I was joking.
But I think the reason American football isn't so popular in Europe is that we already have a similar sport - rugby. Similarly with baseball, we have cricket and rounders. The only sport we have that even vaguely resembles basketball is netball, and that's a girls-only game and probably a variant of basketball anyway.

Its because its just easier in a general conversation to go, "hey did you see the footy match tonight", rather than go "hey did you see the American football match tonight". And also american football is more popular than soccer.

Of course in US. No-one cares about it elsewhere because there are superior sports called rugby and AFL :P

Rugby scares me. This one time, before the match the whole squad came out and did this weird dance with their shirts off.
We call it soccer because when you play it you sock the ball. The game football that we play was played in America long before soccer. So we weren't gonna rename the game for the least popular sport in America.
Besides in football you usually run the ball. It's mostly foot work. The only relevant difference between football and soccer is that instead of carrying the ball you sock it. It makes more sense.
Football is actually my favorite sport.
I've seen alot of matches where the final score is 0 - 0 yet, it's a pretty exiting match.Seems almost everyone here likes football.
IMO, I don´t like it. I can´t stand watching 2 hours of it so that the final score is 0-0. Blerfgh!
I only like it when i watch it with my friends.

Are you sure? Because from what I've seen of the world championships, the olympics, and the influx of international players into the NBA i was under the impression that basketball was almost as big as soccer overseas.

Sorry, poorly worded - that's what I meant. We have no similar sports to rival or replace basketball (besides netball, which is not a popular sport at all), so unlike American football and Baseball - both of which are unable to to get much of a foothold in Europe because of similar, very well established sports - basketball is doing pretty well.
I'm sure that American Football would be big in Europe if rugby had never existed (the fact that American football is a variant of an early version of rugby notwithstanding, of course).
America =/= the world. only Americans call it soccer, the rest of us call it football.[QUOTE="club-sandwich"][QUOTE="B05T0N"]That's soccer...Sandro909

That's good, I enjoy watching international b-ball mostly because the officiating is better on average then the mostly crappy NBA refs. The college game is officiated well too.
As for football, I think its a shame that Europeans put it down so much considering there are so many similarities to rugby, but then again Europeans give us crap about everything based mostly on hearsay and what they see in the media...that's a whole different story though.

Actually, Basketball is incredibly popular on the continent, just not so much in the UK.
Anyway, i love Football. Reading Football club are my supported team. There's nothing like the atmosphere at a Football match!
[QUOTE="CommanderShiro"]Yes I love the game, but I love American Football more. The only time I have good exposure to that "Football" is during FIFA World Cups and Olympics. European Club play doesn't air over here on a consistent basis, and MLS is really really uneventful. I've always been a bigger fan of International play as well I guess. I can't wait for the World Cup in South Africa, its so long away. Pearl_of_Egypt
