So how does OT feel about it? Looks like Prop 8 (Ban on gay marriage in California) is about to win with a 52% victory.

So much for land of the free.dracula_16
I don't know if that's fair to say. People were free to vote against it, but the majority voted for it. It's not like the Government is forcing this on California.

That's true. It's not the land of the free, but rather the land of the majority rules. So sorry if it's not in your favor. Perhaps people in the future will be more understanding. I am a bit shocked that it is being passed, though.
[QUOTE="blasted_panties"]It seems so ironic that the very same states that voted Obama in should choose to vote against gay marriage. It makes you wonder just where their motives are at.Jaforbe
I thought Obama himself was against gay marriage. I could be wrong though.
He's morally against it and believes that the states should decide this. But he was against Proposition 8.

I'm pretty sure he supports it.
I don't understand the whole voting on civil rights deal. Of course it won't get passed, because gays are the minority. Had we voted on abolishing slavery, we would probably have voted no. Had we voted on giving women the right to vote, they would have most likely lost. It simply isn't fair to decide weather or not to grant a MINORITY a right in a election based on amount of votes.
The fact that this would even pass is disgusting. It is more or less saying "WE don't like it, so YOU can't do it." Whatever happened to civil rights.
Free implies that you aren't bound by others twisted sense of morality. And it sure as hell isn't equal, which the US also loves to go on about.Land of the free? You still have to protect values and such. Free doesnt mean just doing whatever you feel like. We vote on things like this for a reason.
Jaforbe
Angry. I see these state bans as nothing less than the 21st century's answer to the Jim Crow laws. Bigotry in legal form.ThePlotholeThe definition of marriage is rather specific to people. Again.....that agenda shouldn't have been pushed. Try civil unions....like the UK.

Who are you to say whats twisted and what isnt? And nothing is equal, everyone knows that. Theres just things that arent socially acceptable, like inbreeding, beastiality, and same-sex-marriage. Im so sick of everyone telling me I have to be ok with it.

I dont go around saying "Hey everyone, Im straight and I love it!". They make such an effort to get accepted that it seems like an infringement most of the time.

That is because everyone assumes that you are straight until you correct them. Not to mention the ammount of hatred that is aimed towards them for no good reason. How many people that are assaulted just because they are homosexual, etc.

Bit of an exaggeration. I haven't heard much of that in the news for years. Sure an occurance may happen but it's not common.Well, if people want to preach tolerance, you should tolerate others opinions as well. I dont accept it and I should not have to defend myself, neither should anyone else who is not ok with it. My beliefs are my own.JaforbeNo one is asking you to change your beliefs. They are just asking for the same rights as everyone else. I don't get why that is so much to ask.

Really, putting 2 opposites on each side with a = sign in the middle isnt an argument. And there is basic human rights and rights given by the society you chose to live in. Marriage is something invented by people, and it is also regulated by those same people. If you live in California at this time, Gay marriage isnt a allowed. Thats how it works.

Kind of unrelated to the topic, but here's something I've never understood. In the gay pride parades, why do they dance around in a vulgar, flashy way? If it wasn't for those kinds of things I don't think there would be such a strong, negative stereotype against homosexuals.
Most people know there's plenty of normal people who are gay but it's sometimes hard to realize that when you see people in purple tights pelvic thrusting on a float.
You understand the point. Why can't we just give homosexuals the same marriage rights as stright couples?DJ_NovakainApparently people aren't ready for it. That's why they should use the UK word civil union. Then there should be no argument. It would be a government sanctioned union for same sex couples to receive the same benefits.....and the same divorces. Sorry...anti marriage here...(for everyone).

This is very good news. Praise God!:D
Look, its simple. Marriage = (equals) the union of a MAN and a WOMAN. Nothing else. That is marriage by definition and by tradition. Man/Man can never and will never be equal to that because they arent. Its very easy. Men cant reproduce together. It simply doesnt work that way.
In other words, it has nothing to do with people opposing the union of two men or two women. It is all to do with terminology. DONT CALL IT MARRIAGE. That is wrong.
Now, if they called it something else (ie civil union) than it wouldnt be a problem, because that is what it is. Get it through ya minds, please.
thx

Yes but if two men get married does that affect you as a person? Just admit it you dont like the idea of two guys kissing... thats why people wont let them have the same benefits as a marriage between a man and a woman
thats why people wont let them have the same benefits as a marriage between a man and a womanbsman00I never understood. People are just arguing for benefits, right? Who cares about a religious marriage? :x Of course, I'm not religious, so what do I know
America is a semi-Christian country (with all the "God Bless America", "God help us" thrown around).
Most Christians view gay marriage as immoral (i think even Obama does).
It's therefore easy to conclude that some people/Christians would want that ban.

Meh...The word "Marriage" to me means an official union between two life partners. All this fuss over a word?
So much for land of the free.dracula_16
My thoughts exactly. But the people do get to vote on wheter to ban someone's civil right.
That's a shame, I think gay couples should be allowed to marry and have the same rights as married heterosexuals. It just goes to show you the bigotry that still exists in this country. Honestly, how does allowing a gay couple to marry hurt you?

Thats the thing, the Church defines marriage as between a man and a woman. But since seperation of church and state clearly doesn't exist, that definition was adopted by the states.
By the way, I'm Catholic.
finally something good happening to this country. Hopefully they'll ban being homosexual altogether next. SilenthpsWow dude. Banning people....somwhat like what happened in WW2?
Hopefully they'll ban being homosexual altogether next. Silenthps:lol: :| Lame. What an atrocious thing to say.
Well that's a shame. California was the first state to even allow gay marriage and now it's about to be overturned because some crackpots disagree with it. Not much anyone can do though as it was a vote... And to the person speaking about the Gay Pride Parades: I agree, lol. If gays want to be respected I believe they should present themselves in a way as to gain that respect. Don't march through Cali, New York, and D.C. wearing pink leather chaps, feather boas, while dancing to "It's Raining Men"; it really is an embarassment to all parties involved and only reinforces gay stereotypes (which is the reason many people look down on gays in the first place).stevenk4k5
Some crackpots? So 52% of the entire population of California are crackpots? That's silly. As for the gay pride comments, I couldn't agree more. If they ever want to be taken seriously as part of the community, they shouldn't try to be as "out there" as possible. Those people need to show some class.
