Students were given math homework that used slavery for examples:

"Each tree had 56 oranges. If 8 slaves pick them equally, then how much would each slave pick?"and my favorite: "If Frederick got two beatings per day, how many beatings did he get in 1 week?". There's also one about how much cotton a slave picked.

I have to admit I lol'ed. What the hell were those teachers thinking?

Why do they have to keep trying to teach non-math lessons in math clas s.

Nationally we are behind in math, HOW ABOUT WE FOCUS ON IT ALREADY in its clas s!

Pffft... the homework never said anything about the colour of the slaves' skin! Well, except for the cotton slave part which was historical.

How is this racist? It simply said "slave" it never made any mention of the skin color of the slave. Though I admit, those were some pretty....strange maths questions.

It doesn't take a genius to figure out they were talking about African slaves. And even if it wasn't Africans, mostly all slavery in the world was based on racial superiority (jews, Africans, Chinese).

You really don't need to defend this. The homework assigned was insensitive and tastless simple as that.

If you google it some other articles come up too. It's probably legit.

The teachers tried explaining it by saying they wanted to teach two subjects at once - math and social studies. They might just be braindead.

No Joke and as this page with the news report shows, the questions were real. Third Grade Homework Assignment Contains References to Slavery. Slavery happened, the people need to accept that fact and get over it being mentioned. Hiding that fact is as bad as the Japanese not talking about the horrors they perpetrated against others during WWII such as "comfort women" that were enslaved in brothels.

the suppression of math in any form is tasteless and simple even if it is sensitive. i dont care if a math problem is about the production of pizzas or the gassing of jews, the critical thinking processes behind the problems are the most important ideas learned in school, the premise or environment surrounding the math problems are inconsequential(excluding engineering problems that take environmental factors into consideration). why are you trying to make people dumb?

May I just ask what makes this racist? I don't see anything racist with the first question at least. Now since it's Georgia it most probably is racist, but I don't see the racism in having slaves in a math question. It doesn't even have to be black slaves, slavery has been extremely common through history.

There's nothing wrong with mentioning slavery, it's just this particular incidence was rather tasteless. No one is denying that it happened, but the proper discussion of slavery should probably happend during a history class.

If you watched the news story, you will have heard that the school was doing some combining of history with math. The students had recently been studying slavery in a social studies class and the math teacher created an assignment that included lessons from the social studies class.

The problem isn't that it's being mentioned, so much as who it's being mentioned by. I think you have to be oblivious or clueless to not understand the social context of this happening in Georgia of all places. It's like they're trolling.

The romans enslaved everything they conquered but even then it was more like indentured servitude . The entire embroilment of slavery is superiority by racial and ethnicity. But I'll give you that, only in the last few hundred years have slavery has been defined this way.

slavery is always bad, but in north america they were at least treated as property, something that needs to be maintained, in south america they were treated as a commodity, something to be consumed in the creation of your end good. and to be clear by consumed i mean worked to death and replaced.
