Pointing out that slavery still exists, even today and in the US.
I agree, it could have been worded differently, but it wasn't. I still think the parents would have gotten upset if the terms used were Roman slaves instead of just slaves (if they were studying Romans instead of US history).
Maybe, but considering at least one of the parents interviewed was black (the only parent on the news segment I watched was), it probably struck close to home. This is the same country. I live about 40 minutes from said county (I live in Cobb County GA, just outside of Atlanta) and it is Gwinnett County so I have seen and heard everything about this. The county is predominately white and all of the parents in an uproar are black. The race of the teachers is yet to be determined as it hasn't been released so we can't say that they were trying to be racist. The teachers erred in judgment and that is all. I would bet that their kids are listening to Ludicrous and other gangster rappers who do nothing but rap about popping caps or other garbage and not object to it as much as they are to these questions.
I am not going to judge the teachers based upon some parents who are all in a tizzy, at least based upon what the county is trying to do with reinforcing other lessons learned in a different class.
I see. I wonder if there were any other cross-curiculum problems.
