Okay, this pisses me off
First- For the non-americans condescendingly dismissing the outrage- "Oh, stupid americans, only thinking about their own stereotypes, ignorant americans, i dont understand them, etc etc etc"
Second- Fried chicken ISa big stereotype with black people, and if, even if you're not american, dont know about this stereotype, then you need to get off OT for a while. Hell, anyone who has spent 10 minutes on 4cham has seen the threads that start with a KFC bucket, and the pictures of black people that ensue. And dont tell me that the world's #1 online forum isn't reaching everyone over the world.

So my black friends who enjoys their chicken should be completely blocked from public view due to the 'fact' he is endorsing a stereotype?

Nowhere, in my entire post, did i EVER indicate or suggest what you just said in your post. Stop trying to turn my words against me, because honestly, you fail at it. What i did say, however, is that it IS a stereotype. Plain and simple. And that its one that most people know about

Well duh, thats why we're discussing it.

So how is it an 'outrage' as you described it? Why are you condemning a TV commercial showing a Australian man and West Indian (not African American) man enjoying chicken?

And by saying that fried chicken is associated with black people is showing ignorance, it is racially associated with African Americans and you're just grouping two different sorts of people with two different cultures into the same group. Ever heard of the Stolen Generations? Yeah the Aus. Government at the time thought Indigenous people were the same group of people despite them having different languages, different customs, different laws, etc.

Sounds a lot like what you're doing with grouping West Indians and African Americans together, which what happened with the Stolen Generations.

None of my points are particularly new..but I will state them anyway. Here in Australia, the entire black person and chicken stereotype simply does not exist, I would not know anything about it if not for "funny picture" threads on boards like Gamespot. -KFC is a major sponsor of Cricket in Australia. -The West Indian crowds are known to be rowdy, and to be the only Australian supporter there would be a very "awkward situation". -At the time this ad aired, Australia was playing cricket against the West Indies. It is in no way racist, and as KFC have said in their statement, it was made to only be screened in Australia. I think anyone offended by this ad really needs to take a hard look at them self and maybe drink a bag of concrete.

Oh, because they are SO easy to tell apart right? "No, this isnt a white guy surrounded by black people and giving them fried chikkinz, its an Australian and west indies" that completely changes things

RabidChocobo1

Considering that it's a commercial aired only in Australia and only during a cricket match with the West Indies, featuring black people dressed as WI supporters... Well yeah, it completely changes things. No sane people in Australia thought of black dudes from Louisiana.

Guys, the following picture is of a west indie, not an african american.

Therefore, it can not be defined as racist

Nah, that's definitely not a West Indian cricket supporter, the gear is all wrong.

I find it ironic that you're the one that was complaining about racism in the first place then posting an aggressively racist image. Hypocritical much? Reminds me of PETA killing the animals it took 'care' of.

Also that isn't a West Indies supporter.

RabidChocobo1

That picture isn't racist. I'm white and if I saw a bucket of KFC being dropped I'd look exactly the same :P

Seriously, there is no point to this arguing. Do American's really care that they might be offending some Muslims living in the Middle East every time they broadcast a show showing a woman's cleavage? Do American's care that they might be offending Australian's by portraying us as "crocodile hunters with kangaroos hopping down the street in the middle of the city"?

HAH. First off, i never claimed to be outraged by the commercial... in fact, i dont believe it was intentional, either. on top of that, i find racist jokes hilarious. The thing that im going on about is
1) People not recognizing the stereotype, because it obviously IS a stereotype
2) Non-americans targeting americans and using this as another reason to bash on them

You know what i find hypocritic? all the damn europeans who hate on Americans because our media makes us so arrogant and makes us hate other countries. What makes you any better? Your media makes you hate America just as well, just on the basis that we're american. You're all just as ignorant as ignorant americans. Think about that. lol Americans are getting butthurt and none of us Australians are batting an eyelid.

gamertylers

Lol at generalizations.

I fail to see the generalisation.

Thread Title: 'Racist' KFC ad causes uproar in US.

So obviously Americans are butthurt. It's nothing to be ashamed of.

I find it unfortunate that your country and its people need to stick their noses into other nations business and cry "racist" or whatever else just because it plays a stereotype in your nation. I didn't know what happened there applied to everywhere else.

And this isn't a case of the ridiculous argument and hate of the "stupid American's". I'm always the first person in my classes to think that all the America-haters here are just as idiotic and close minded given that they have no real idea of what is going on in the world. According to these people the first President of the United States of America was George W. Bush. Seriously you mention Martin Luther, and all of a sudden "oh the black guy?". However when there is genuine ignorance involved and a lack of context and understanding, a lot of people and going to point as say "haha stupid American swine".

2) I never did target Americans/USA, if it was any other country/person that called it racist I'd dish out the same treatment.

3) I never hated on Americans, in fact I made friends with plenty of Americans I've met. And Australian media doesn't hate on Americans if you read the report properly it was a person's opinion that was presented on the report. And way to blanket statement on us Australians that we're all ignorant while you are being ignorant (hypocrisy cough) to the fact that Australia is a multicultural nation (they can't have that while being ignorant to other cultures) and to the fact that Africans and West Indians are different cultures.

I honestly find it hypocritical, that you say everyone outside the US hates you and takes every opportunity to bash your country. I for one, as well as many many people i know have nothing against America. you say we generalize your people and such, yet your generalizing the rest of the world by saying we ALL hate you.

People in this country are FAR too quick to cry racism, they are overly sensitive as well. The commercial was in no way intended to offend anyone, it was joke for Australians who had a cricket team playing a West Indies team at the time..everyone isso consumed with "guilt"about what we did back..about...100s of years ago..i just don't understand it at all..i could see if it was really intended to be something offensive..but it wasn't...the ignorance of some people is astonishing..they fail to look at the culture that the commercial was created for. As far as i know there aren't any "fried chicken stereotypes" in Australia..so how could it be racist...made me laugh to be honest..:P

It's racist of them to assume that all black people are the same as african americans; ironic really, that those crying 'racist!' are in fact the racists.

Racism is cried over just about anything in the U.S. because we're a very sue happy country. Lawyers that will work for free unless they win the case have created a kind of "lottery" legal system here. Spilled hot coffee on yourself? Sue McDonalds. Not smart enough to realize eating 3 Big-Macs a day probably isn't healthy for you and now you're fat? Sue McDonalds. Watched an ad that wasn't even broadcast in your country that you've taken out of context and perceived as racist because of your own nation's stereotypes? Sue KFC.

Too bad most people don't care what does or does not cause an uproar in America. It's an Australian commercial.

Racism doesn't simple mean playing on sterotypes. I mean, besides the fact that that's not what the commercial was doing anyway, the fact that there's no judgement, there's no hatred, there's nothing to suggest any sort of negative intention or feelings trowards anyone of any skin colour.

Firstly, why are Americans getting outraged? It's an Australian commercial dealing with Australian culture towards West Indies, who, unless I'm mistaken, aren't American either. In fact, the commercial is a play on the fact that the two groups are having friendly competition towards each other through sport.

Secondly, even if it did contain "African Americans" it's still Australian culture which is going to be entirely different to American culture.

So, it's not racist (as far as my definition goes), and it has nothing to do with America or American culture. Same goes for that "black faces" skit. America needs to realise that not every country is so sensitive about racial issues. yes, Australia has a shameful past too, but we deal with it by being able to poke fun at other nations, races, including our own. Lo and behold we manage to get through the day just fine.

unfortunately the press make up stories of racism to create a headline topic, they've probably sold several hundred thousand copies extra because of this. It's very likely the person claiming it was racist was white and if they had any values of racism would probably be going around condeming 'black police support group' and 'black music awards'. Their opinion is never the majority and generally angers many people because of that.

'Racist' KFC cricket ad causes uproar in US

A KFC advertisement that shows an Australian cricket supporter giving fried chicken to West Indies fans has caused outrage in the US, where it has been interpreted as racist.
In the ad, part of KFC's "Cricket Survival Guide" series, Mick the Australian is surrounded by dancing West Indies fans, and says: "Need a tip when you're stuck in an awkward situation?"
He then hands out a bucket of KFC to the crowd - an action which has been seen as supporting a long-standing US stereotype that African Americans eat fried chicken.
In the US bloggers and journalists have claimed the ad is deliberately racist, with the Baltimore Sun even suggesting the ad might be part of a viral prank.
Popular viral media website Buzzfeed posted the video with the subtitle: "What's a white guy to do when he awkwardly finds himself in a crowd full of black folks? KFC has the answer."
Dr Brendon O'Connor, an associate professor at the University of Sydney, said reaction to the ad reflected the "insularity" of the American people.
"They have a tendency to think that their history is more important than that of other countries," he told ninemsn.
But Dr O'Connor, who is currently writing a book about US stereotypes and insularity, also said it was important to realise that when taken out of context the ads could look racist.
"Fried chicken is seen as a traditional southern food ... a staple of an African American diet," he said.
"We don't have many African American people here and we don't have these stereotypes.
"Americans would find the ads racist mostly because they don't realise the context that the West Indies team was here to play cricket."
Dr Peter Gale, a senior lecturer at the University of South Australia, said the ad could affect Australia's reputation internationally - especially in the wake of the Hey Hey It's Saturday blackface scandal
"Even when we're doing advertising we need to be careful about pre-existing historical stereotypes," Dr Gale said.
"We have got a responsibility to be aware of that, and I think that if the media doesn't wise up we're in a lot of trouble."
A spokeswoman for KFC told ninemsn the company will comment on the issue later today.

Very few things irritate me more than Yank media. The amount of things they seem to find offensive is f'ing incredible. What's worse is that they truly believe their cultural and historical values ought to be strictly applied to the rest of the world. Here in Australia we don't find this racist, we have no history being racist to the black community about fried chicken, this stereotype is unknown to the people of Australia, but no American had to stick their noses in and shout racist.

"Fried chicken is seen as a traditional southern food ... a staple of an African American diet,"

I'm pretty sure the West Indians aren't African Americans, isn't this racist assuming all black people are the same?

lightleggy

omg that ad had nothing to do with racism....americans are crazy

I'm an American, and I agree with you there. Some are indeed, out of their minds.

Sue KFC.

Atmanix
Sue happy, yes. These cases are rarely taken with any level of seriousness. I hate it when people bring up the hot coffee lawsuit- the coffee is served scalding hot, completely unsafe. If you wouldn't make coffee like that for your own family, you surely shouldn't be serving it to strangers who are paying you for what they assume is a quality product. i do agree that Americans are blowing this out of proportion though, but you've got to understand that their is deep seated racial tension here in the states, and it's something we are constantly fighting with.

Americans might think this is racist because black people eating fried chicken is a stereotype that exists in their country. This ad was shown during cricket matches between Australia and the West Indies. If England had been playing at the time, the ad would have shown the bloke feeding chicken to the Barmy Army to make them sit down and shut up. There's no racism intended or perceived in Australia. The complaints I've seen have come from Americans guilty about they treat people in their country

/thread

seriously, that says it all

Honestly there was no reason for anyone to post after this.. hell why am i even posting? spot on the mark.

Well, I posted to agree with people, does that count?

I agree again :D Perfectly sums it up. Although I would fix "The Complaints I've seen have come from Americans guilty about how they USED to treat people". Other than that, those are my sentiments EXACTLY.

That is true, but racism against Aborigines/African Americans is a HUGE issue in Australia. Probably just as much if not more than the US.

That is just their retaliation, don't buy into it so easy. Even if it may be true, question it, think about it, don't just blindly follow. KFC is a huge, lying corporation so OF COURSE they are going to try to justify and win back any people who may be offended by the ad. I don't really understand the justification anyway, it barely looks like they are even at a game and the crowd is happy and dancing and have no need to be "pleased" by a bucked of fried chicken??? If there were angry people running around it would make a little more sense. I still stand, they aren't DOGS.
