Greetings,

I do not have much of an appreciation for rap music. While I understand that it is a more poetic kind of music, I feel that too much of it involves little to no creativity or talent. The only rap artist that I can enjoy is Eminem, yet I consider him an exception because his music is actually meaningful and good.

As an example, let us talk about Soulja Boy. I have listened to several of his songs, and although it seems like nearly anyone could do what he does, he makes far more money than people within the most challenging of professions. He makes more money than astronauts, project managers, psychiatrists, surgeons, and others that require years upon years of education and training.

Why is this?

It does not seem like this kind of music would have been classified as "music" in the past, yet for some reason this generation accepts it and enjoys it. Assuming I am not in the wrong, this generation is either more "stupid" or there is something else entirely.

Songs like this are basically insulting the human race. We can get as much education as we want, and study and work as hard as we want, but we'll never make as much money as Soulja Boy. Apparently this is alright because he can constantly repeat, "This, right here, is my, swag!"

As with any genre of music, rap is composed of a lot of "bad" and "good" music.

Listening to Soulja Boy is your problem.

There is nothing wrong with society, I think you should listen to more then just mainstream rap before criticizing rap as a whole.

**** mainstream rap!!!!

Underground has plenty of meaningful and amazing songs.

A few examples:

Same Story

Rain

Porcelain

Whats wrong with Bill?

November

I got plenty more if you need more convincing ;)

I can see what your saying and I agree with to some degree. Soulja Boy is probably, no he IS far worse than Justin Beaver. I recommend a dosage of Drake: Thank me later album. It is just pure awesome.

I don't like rap, but even I can admit Soulja Boy shouldn't be representative of all rap. Anyway I hardly ever hear about Soulja Boy where I live, he's not even popular.

If there was a surgeon, and he was a terrible surgeon, it is unlikely that he would be famous, praised and rich. Why are exceptions made for horrendous singers in the mainstream media?

Because their songs are catchy and/or fun to dance to. I hate Soulja Boi's music, but I can understand how it became the fad that it was.

You're looking for music in the wrong places. Turn off the radio. There's just as much terrible popular rock and pop as rap.

Yeah, at least popular rap has it's purposes. idk what the point of a band like Nickelback is.

A lot of artists don't want to go mainstream. They know that when they go mainstream they don't have as much lyrical freedom as they do in the underground. I think another reason is rappers image. As much as I hate Gucci Mane and Soulja Boy and Lil Wayne . . . they are more marketable than Vinnie Paz, Blue Scholars, or Celph Titled.

Mainstream rap didn't always be terrible. To be honest I have no idea WTF happened. I don't really care if the music I like isn't played on the radio though.

There are rappers who make more money than surgeons. Also jocks who cheat. It is a perverted reward system.

I'm not sure what point your making. If your problem is entertainers being paid too much, then why are you singling out rappers and singers that you don't like. I can just as easily say why is (insert your favorite band) making more then a teacher or firefighter. Entertainers (good or bad), pro athletes, actors, actresses, etc. get paid ridiculous amounts of money to entertain people. As far ask your dislike of rap music, that's your opinion, but as other posters have illustrated there are plenty of poetic MCs out there.

That's business.

One can also say that athletes don't deserve their fortunes for playing football, or that actors don't deserve their fortunes for role-playing in front of a camera. But...they bring in LOTS of money via ticket/movie/album sales, and therefore they deserve to be rich as ****. Yes, even if their work sucks.

And it has nothing to do with "this generation." Back in the early 90s, there was MC Hammer and Vanilla Ice. Back in the 80s there were hair metal bands. Back in the 70s it was disco.

Bone Thugs sucks. Other than that, pretty good list. Although I find JMT speaking in simple terms. Oh, and how about Soulja Slim?

Early Bone Thugs are better than half of that list.

Is this supposed to be a serious question?

Well for starters, listening to a bad singer/rapper/etc isn't gonna leave you crippled or dead.

Here's my problem with rap: it's boring to me. Now don't get me wrong, because I really like "rapping"; I just hate the background music most rappers use. It's boring and it'll put me to sleep. But if you give me a group like Bionic Jive or Reveille I'll omgasm. There's some good rapcore out there that goes unnoticed.

Bone Thugs are good as hell I don't think ive ever met someone into rap that didn't like them. And I got one of Soulja Slims albums but i could never really get into him and honestly the only rapper i can think of off the top of my head from Louisiana I like is probably Lil Boosie

I wouldn't say that. I like the Bone songS, Creepin On Ah Come Up and Down Foe My Thang on their Creepin On Ah Come Up album. But I find their soft voices unhardcore. I hate the soft voices they have. Too soft for me, not hard enough.

Hemmaroids

Eh, to each their own. I think the way they sing, use harmonies, and have "soft" voices makes them unique.

(Though I'll agree that their recent stuff is mostly garbage)

I love when people say Eminem is the only rapper they enjoy because he only raps about meaningful things, when songs like "Under the Influence" and "My Name Is" are the exact opposite. This does not mean he doesn't rap about real things though (for example, "Stan," "The Way I Am," and "White America.")

To find good rap, like all other music, dig through the crap and you'll find something you like.
