I have heard quite a bit of it and I do not like anything about rap music mostly because I do not like the beat of it nor do I like what they talk about.

CHOASXIII

Cool, that doesn't mean the genre sucks. I like barely any metal but I wouldn't call the genre bad -- most of what I've heard just isn't my thing.

By the way: Your statements of "I have heard quite a bit of it" and "I don't like what they talk about" contradict each other. If you've truly heard a lot of hip-hop, you'd know that they rap about so many different subjects. It's not all objectifying women, talking about their new rims, or shooting people up. Not even close.

I agree, the whole genre in general sucks.

Somehow I doubt you've listened to everything the genre has to offer...

Well how I worded my statement does not contradict the fact that I do not like the genre in general. I personally have heard the other songs beyond the subjects you stated but still I do not like rap because that is my preference just like people prefer metal over pop.

Greetings,

I do not have much of an appreciation for rap music. While I understand that it is a more poetic kind of music, I feel that too much of it involves little to no creativity or talent. The only rap artist that I can enjoy is Eminem

If there was a surgeon, and he was a terrible surgeon, it is unlikely that he would be famous, praised and rich. Why are exceptions made for horrendous singers in the mainstream media?

You're honestly gonna use Soulja boy as the standard to judge all rap music by? see fella thats what throws your point way off course. Soulja Boy is part of the commercialized garbage, that I'll meet you on because I do agree the heavily commercialized rappers don't have alot of talent. There is alot of rap that does indeed take talent, and that has this flow and rhythm to it. There is so many great underground rap artists and rap artists that are old school that produce some really great music (Lupe Fiasco, Apathy, El Da Sensei, Masta Ace, and Jedi Mind tricks) just to name a few. Alot of people tend to hate on rap because they think its the cool thing to do (Not saying you're doing this) but what they don't realize is that I could take music from any genre and point out both its strengths and weaknesses. Sure alot of the stuff you hear on the radio and see on tv in music videos is the stuff that is mostly a real poor representation of rap in general.

You may not understand some rap music, and that is your choice. But a lot of the rap music with "simple" lyrics and where they don't talk about much, it is more about a feeling you get when you hear the song. A lot of songs, however stupid their lyrics may be, make you want to bob your head, move your body, and it gets you pumped.

Songs are meant to move you in some way. Whether that is through thought, reflection, or raw emotion. If a song makes you feel a certain way, then it has done it's job. A lot of rap songs, even though they have simple lyrics, make you want to bob your head and press repeat.

One example of that is Youn Jeezy's song "I Put On". The lyrics are pretty ******... but it's a good song. "I'm So Hood" by DJ Khaled... I'm not a hood rat, and my mouth isn't slugged up, but when that bass-line hits something gets in me. Rap is funny like that.

Rap songs bring out pure aggression in me like no other music. It pulls a "swag" out of me. It give me an extra bounce in my step. A lot of songs you have to listen to the music.. but a lot of rap songs, I FEEL the music.

But that's just me...

And people act like bad lyrics are new and just strictly from rap music. There have been hit songs with terrible lyrics for years. Or songs with lyrics that just repeat over and over and over.

Here's my problem with rap: it's boring to me. Now don't get me wrong, because I really like "rapping"; I just hate the background music most rappers use. It's boring and it'll put me to sleep. But if you give me a group like Bionic Jive or Reveille I'll omgasm. There's some good rapcore out there that goes unnoticed.-Tish-

My God I can't take another OT thread about hip hop because usually it involves gross misconceptions, generalizations, and general uninformed agreement that the underground in hip hop is automatically better. There is good Hip Hop everywhere, in the mainstream and in the underground. You just got to find it. Soulja Boy makes that much money because he makes those songs, and people pay for that name. Anyone can be educated if they work at it but people like Soula Boy, who make music like he does, don't come around often. No, it's not cause he's good but he's original and has an audience he appeals to which works for him.

I don't get the subculture or the music and I definitely do not find it appealing to the ears. I don't have an interest in exploring it, because I have thus far heard nothing which makes me think that that would be a rewarding enterprise. But while I don't like most rap, using Soulja Boy as a basis for criticizizing the genre is like using Eragon to argue that fantasy sucks.

There's nothing you or I can do about Soulja's oversized revenue streams, and so I don't bother paying attention to him. I may be able to name about two hundred artists who are at least ten times better musically than he is - that doesn't change the fact that no one is going to get anything out of me doing that.

Why do people like Soulja Boy make money? Because there are a lot of people in this world with no appreciation for real music, lyrical substance, or talent in general. Said people are more than content with a decent beat and a couple catchy lines, and maybe even a dance to go along with it. It's simple, entertaining, and with a decent subwoofer sounds great in your car... at least, to that group of people, which is quite large. Society, in general, is dumb and lazy. They want things to be simple. People that appreciate all the things I mentioned; complex pieces of music, compositions, lyrical substance and meaning, are in the minority. That is why people like Soulja Boy succeed in today's society. EDIT: Just to be clear, this is not criticizing rap. There are plenty of artists in the genre that are very talented and create very meaningful pieces of music. Their style may not appeal to everyone, but rest assured not all rappers are Soulja Boys.

I never said people are dumb for enjoying that type of music. I simply said that society, in general, is dumb and lazy. That's my opinion and you may not agree with it. It was meant to imply that society has been "dumbed down", much like music such as Soulja Boy's is dumbed down. It's simple. It's upbeat. That's the appeal. I have no appreciation for that type of music, but I do not condemn anyone that does.

Exactly. Some people here are acting like their farts don't stink.

I'd wager that most of us here like dumb crap, especially considering that we're posting on a videogame website. Iron Man was a pretty silly movie with almost no real substance, but I still like it. There's plenty of room for people to like quality gourmet food, but sometimes a dude is just in the mood for a bag of potato chips.

It's one thing to say that Soula Boy makes stupid music, but completely different to say that Soulja Boy is popular because his fans are stupid. If liking something stupid, lowbrow, and unrefined makes a person an idiot, then anyone who's NOT an idiot isn't gonna be posting here in the first place.

I doubt there are many people out there that listen to Soulja Boy and absolutely nothing else. That's not what I was implying. I was implying that there are more people that lean toward the dumbed down upbeat productions of people like Soulja Boy than there are people that lean toward the other end of the spectrum, hence his success.

They want things to be simple. People that appreciate all the things I mentioned; complex pieces of music, compositions, lyrical substance and meaning, are in the minority. That is why people like Soulja Boy succeed in today's society.MrGeezer

Why is someone dumb just because they enjoy a certain kind of music?

I enjoy some deep/complex music but I also enjoy some catchy mainstream hip-hop...so am I intelligent or dumb?

You probably haven't played a lot of video games if you think all videogames are worthless and dumb. On the topic of rap however; I can't really say I hate it (it's not like rap killed my family) but I don't respect it at all. I've listened to a lot of those cult trve underground rappers and I don't think any of it is above "okay". I think rap as a singing style is by and large pathetic and whatever music they decided to "sample" is automatically made even worse. I mean, I can't imagine anyone actually writing music in other genres and including a rap vocal style. I don't see how anyone sensible would do that. But I don't literally hate rap and I don't think people that listen to rap are idiots but I do dilsike it a lot.

See what I mean about people thinking that their farts don't stink?

See...you think I'm ignorant about videogames because I think they're mostly dumb and juvenile, and because I don't have any respect for them. However, isn't it equally possible that YOU are the one with bad taste?

There are people in this thread saying the same thing about rap..."if you don't have any respect for rap and think it's mostly garbage, then you just haven't heard much rap." Yet, YOU are perfectly fine dismissing their defenses of rap. You still think that rap mostly sucks and you don't have any respect for it as a form of music.

What people need to get away from is the notion that "what I personally like" is the same thing as "what is good". People need to accept that their tastes aren't "good" just because they like it, that their farts DO stink, and that they can be just as "dumb, lazy and ignorant" as the people who they look down on. YOU say that videogames aren't dumb and worthless, but how is that fundamentally any different than a rap fan saying that rap isn't dumb and worthless?

i hate people that say they don't listen to rap but they listen to eminem, sorry to say but music is racially divided, TC not to start anything but are you white or not black? because i always wondered if eminem was a black rapper how many of you guys would still enjoy his music. I'm just saying what i see

Chris_Williams

I was going to say same thing when people say they don't listen to rap but like em. I raise an eyebrow there are other mainstream rappers out there with better skills and has some meanigful songs here and there. I wonder if some people just don't even attempt to listen to their lyrics just because the rappers are black............

Greetings,

I do not have much of an appreciation for rap music. While I understand that it is a more poetic kind of music, I feel that too much of it involves little to no creativity or talent. The only rap artist that I can enjoy is Eminem, yet I consider him an exception because his music is actually meaningful and good.

As an example, let us talk about Soulja Boy. I have listened to several of his songs, and although it seems like nearly anyone could do what he does, he makes far more money than people within the most challenging of professions. He makes more money than astronauts, project managers, psychiatrists, surgeons, and others that require years upon years of education and training.

Why is this?

It does not seem like this kind of music would have been classified as "music" in the past, yet for some reason this generation accepts it and enjoys it. Assuming I am not in the wrong, this generation is either more "stupid" or there is something else entirely.

Songs like this are basically insulting the human race. We can get as much education as we want, and study and work as hard as we want, but we'll never make as much money as Soulja Boy. Apparently this is alright because he can constantly repeat, "This, right here, is my, swag!"

Turtlecream
I agree with you. Being a celebrity is the only way people like 'Soulja Boy' could get rich. That's hardly fair when other people have to work off their asses.

I didn't deny anyone their right to listen to rap and love it. Power to you if you enjoy rap, I don't care. However you flat out said that everyone here is into "dumb crap": videogames. I don't have to enjoy rap just to be edgy and "open minded", however that doesn't mean I have to flat out hate it and call all of its fans morons. I said that of the examples that I have listened to, none have been enjoyable or well made. Also, you implied that videogames in general are stupid crap whereas I said that one genre wasn't to my satisfaction. I think those animal simulator games are stupid as hell but I'm still not a judgemental prick about it.

I agree, rap music is fun to listen to but meaningless nowadays. Even some of the supposed greats, like Jay Z, just rap about how great they are and how they're god. First time I heard him rap on the radio I thought "who the **** is this clown?"

Great, now point to a single incident of me calling videogame fans morons.

And videogames were just an example of the "dumb crap" I was talking about. It's easy as hell for someone to look at another person's musical preferences and say, "I could never like that, because that sucks." But I seriously challenge you to honestly tell me that you don't like anything that you freely admit is garbage. Whether it's the occasional trashy movie, stupid song, infantile videogame, or the occasional can of soda pop, I'd almost be willing to wager money that every single person here DOES indulge in garbage sometimes, KNOWING that it's basically garbage.

And that for anyone who says that they DON'T indulge in garbage or stupid crap, then those people just don't REALIZE that they like garbage.

I never said that videogame fans are stupid. The fact that you assumed that's what I was implying merely shows what I'm talking about. The fact of the matter is that smart people enjoy trash too. The whole point of my comment was more about countering the general idea that rappers like Soulja Boy are able to be popular because of a dumbing down of society. Well how does that work, exactly? Surely you admit that smart people like Soulja Boy, just as I can admit that smart people also like videogames. EVERYONE likes garbage sometimes, so how is the success of rappers like Soulja Boy indicative of society getting dumbed down?
