Link [quote="Steve Bene - Washington Monthly"] Last week, after a rather pointless vote to repeal the entirety of the Affordable Care Act, House Republicans announced their second major initiative: the "No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act." It was additional evidence that the new House GOP majority isn't exactly focused on the economy and job creation, and it seemed like another gesture to the party's far-right base. After all, existing law already restricts public funds for abortions. Today, Nick Baumann takes a closer look at the proposal, and highlights an odious provision that proponents would use to redefine rape.

[quote="Nick Baumann - Mother Jones"] With this legislation, which was introduced last week by Rep. Chris Smith (R-N.J.), Republicans propose that the rape exemption be limited to "forcible rape." This would rule out federal assistance for abortions in many rape cases, including instances of statutory rape, many of which are non-forcible. For example: If a 13-year-old girl is impregnated by a 24-year-old adult, she would no longer qualify to have Medicaid pay for an abortion. (Smith's spokesman did not respond to a call and an email requesting comment.) ... Other types of rapes that would no longer be covered by the exemption include rapes in which the woman was drugged or given excessive amounts of alcohol, rapes of women with limited mental capacity, and many date rapes.

So, let me see if I have this right, this bill - which already has 173 Republican cosponsors - has no chance of passing and would have the following impacts if it actually did. 1. Limiting the rape exception to only violent, forced rape and not any other type (such as a boss telling a subordinate that if she doesn't have sex with him she'll be fired.) 2. Would do nothing but reinforce existing federal law that forbids taxpayer funding for abortions by limiting what can be classified as "rape" and forcing female victims to have rape babies regardless by limiting exception cases. Am I being too harsh here? Is this inaccurate to say that the first major Republican initiative was a pointless repeal of the Affordable Healthcare Act that had no chance of passing the Senate and their second is to redefine rape to make raped women carry babies they don't want that has no chance of passing the Senate?

The Democrats at least passed healthcare, care for 9/11 victims, repeal of DADT, and other progressive legislation in the past couple of years. What have the Republicans done besides drag us into the gutter?

Neither of them are really solving any of the problems facing us. All they do is blame the other for not doing anything. Time to get rid of all of them if you ask me.

Statutory rape is one of a number of rape scenarios no longer covered. Go to a fraternity party and see some woman passed out on a bed from drinking too much and have sex with her? = No longer counts as rape Have a subordinate at work that you want to plow? Go ahead and tell her she'll be fired if she doesn't go along. = No longer counts as rape Know a mentally retarded girl that doesn't know what she's doing? Molest and impregnate away. = No longer counts as rape. Basically only violent rape would still count under this redefinition for the purposes of figuring out which women would be forced to carry your spawn to term.

Technically #2 is blackmail, not rape. I disagree with #1 and #3; those are stupid.

The two aren't equivalent. Sexual harassment can be making lewd comments or spanking her ass; rape involves sex.

I think it falls under sexual harassment though. However, rape is a more serious charge, yes.

If you believe that, it would be a waste of time debating with you. I presented a link and a legal analysis that highlights what this bill would do - Chip away at what the definition of rape is. There's no federally codified definition and each state has their own definition.

You made the claim so you need to prove it or otherwise you are evading.

If it's not that hard, you should provide the links.

So let's see them.

And I want to see links that advocate for having sex with "little kids".

[QUOTE="Theokhoth"]The Democrats at least passed healthcare, care for 9/11 victims, repeal of DADT, and other progressive legislation in the past couple of years. What have the Republicans done besides drag us into the gutter?Omni-Slash
pay for all your programs through over taxation....

How in the hell are our taxes so terrible? Hell Obama just lowered taxes permanently for every making under 250,000. I swear some people go ape **** when the word "tax" comes into a conversation.

Meh. I call bullcrap on this article from "The Washington Monthly"? No legitimate news organization has said anything about it. Just bluster to get people worked up. Call me when there something really bad the GOP is doing.

..it's your understanding based of liberal leaning analysis of ONE story..hell if it's on the webs it MUST be true.....the hypcrocy is painful....i'lk wait until I can see if there are other view-points that are being released.....

Actually, it's my understanding after reading the text of the document itself. Link

The document itself is a part of reality, therefore it is liberally biased.
