*sigh of relief* ahhhhh, music, a topic i can relate to
Genres that are overated (and i dislike) are;
Alternative "Metal": Its just not what is used to be, alternative metal was supposed to be an "alternative" to music that was getting overplayed, and back and in the 90's we had some truley alternative METAL bands like Faith No More, Primus, Alice In Chains, Flattbush, Helmet, (early) White Zombie, THE MELVINS and more. And now all you hear on the radio are lame alternative "metal" bands sound the same as the last, AND DONT EVEN SOUND REMOTELY METAL; stuff like Lynkin Park, Three Days Grace, Flyleaf, Evanescnce, Stone Sour, Coal Chamber and alot more bands that try to convey some "hard-edge", "dark" pseudo-rebellion attitude.
Scene-core & Scene-grind (Metalcore, Deathcore, fashioncore): Bands like Bring Me The Horizons, Job for a Cowboy, As I Lay Dying, Poison the Well, The Devil Wears Prada, Suicide Silence and countless other. To me all it is is a bunch of emo scene kids thinking the could play real metal or grindcore.
and "Emo": Another one of my favorite typse of music gone down the drain over the years. What happened to originality in emo music? Band like Fugazi, Rites of Spring, At the Drive-In, Moss Icon, Cap'n Jazz were all part of the early emo scene, a scene that was all about the music, NOT the fashion. Now we got whimps in girl pants whining into the microphones to pop-punk tunes like Hawthorne Heights, Fall Out Boy, Cute Is What We Aim For, The Acedemy Is....The type of music where if you have a cute haircut you'll make it far.

I couldn't have said it better.
I'm surpised how many people put Radiohead on here. Sure, they get a lot of attention, but they deserve it in my opinion.
Also, I'm offended that somebody even mentioned Muse and The Mars Volta in here. Those people couldn't be any more wrong.

I don't really think Radiohead is overrated either. They've been quite diverse over the years, and have consistently put out great albums.
Overrated:
The Eagles
Tool
Rage Against the Machine
Sublime
A Perfect Circle
Pretty much ANY lame 90s alt rock, I hate it all.
Deathxcore
Just because you dont like that sort of music doesnt make it overated. Different people have different tastes.
I dont think anyone here is actually saying that someone is overated...I just think you guys have personal grudges against them. If they made it this far out in the world and are popular than they earned it. Nobody is overated. I think we should talk about the underated bands like that are really good but are not so popular. But then again, you people will start doing the same thing you guys just did here....so forums are hopeless...everyone is trying to proove each other wrong. And Rage Against the Machine are good as hell. You cant go wrong with Tom Morello...he's good. Get over it.
[QUOTE="balindos"]Today the music industry is controlled by the publishers and they have an influence on the musicians music because they know they can sell the same thing over and over.

I mean the Beatles and so many amazing bands that deserve there credit have been mentioned, while we had o somany people defend there preciouse very very talented new aged bands :roll:I don't think it's unfair to call the Beatles overrated when so many consider them the best band ever. Nor do I think it's fair that people denounce newer bands because they haven't been around as long and aren't "legends"yet.
I don't think anyone can dispute the talent found in The Beatles, and the Rolling Stones, and Black Sabbath, and whomever else. There's some excellent talent, and they made some great music, but that doesn't give them leave from the question of whether they're overrated or underrated, or simply well-rated.
I personally judge whether a band is overrated/underrated/whatever depending on their musical ability and songwriting skills, along with a minor slice of influence, compared to popular opinion. If it doesn't match up, I get my answer.
I just enjoy the fact that no matter how many people tell me Opeth are "boring" or "pretentious" or they have "horrible transitions" that it won't ever stop me from loving them, buying everything they release and going to see them as many times as I can.
:)
